Last year I discovered that even very simple can be transformed into an exciting product using the Cradle to Cradle methodology. This resulted in the Venlo bag, which won the price for the best student design. Because of this success I wanted to investigate if Cradle to Cradle can also be used to improve the sustainability of food, which has to comply with a lot more requirements than a paper bag. To make sure that the is feasible I followed a master course about design that provided the required knowledge. The need for Cradle to Cradle food also became clear from the information provided during the course. The industry makes increasingly complex materials that in many cases have a negative impact on reusability and the environment. Laminated films that contain up to 6 layers of different materials are used to increase shelf life and shield the food from the toxic inks used in printing. The emerging trend of incorporating small sensors that detect spoilage can also lead to from which the materials can never be reclaimed. These packages therefore end up on landfills or are burned resulting in pollution and the loss of valuable nutrients. The design proposed in this submission aims to show consumers and producers an alternative to conventional food. Instead of trying to minimize the amount of the Cradle to Cradle solution aims to increase its intrinsic value. This is done by adding functionality to the that fits the Golden Age brand and the food products contained in it. The enclosure in which the noodles are transported for example can be used as a noodles and the seasoning transform themselves in a small herb garden when planted in the soil. This way the absorbs some of the CO2 emitted during its production. In addition to the increased functionality the is made from carefully selected materials. These materials are mainly biological nutrients that can safely degrade after their use has come to an end. The cheap and low quality of the noodles here in the west though has given it a junk food status. However anyone who has visited Asia knows that this reputation is not fair. The aim of the presented in this submission is therefore to bring the best authentic noodles in combination with a well thought out array of Asian culinary items to Dutch kitchens. To make the as realistic as possible it has been designed around the fictive brand Golden Age. The Golden Age Authentic Experience consists of a number of food and non-food products. The contains noodles, seasoning and soup base. These are contained in an Asian noodles and a lid that covers and seals the. The spices are packaged in that burst and their content onto the noodles. By spreading the seasoning over a number of the consumer can adjust the spiciness and flavour of the noodles. The interaction of opening the was inspired by the fun people seem to have when popping bubble plastic. In addition to the noodles, the contains a set of chopsticks, a small recipe book with noodles recipes and some instructions for using and discarding the product. The Golden Age Authentic Experience is designed to take a delicious meal of noodles to work or on travel. The only thing that is required to prepare them is hot water. The consumer can use the noodles and lid multiple times by buying re-fill and noodles. When traveling with the, the lid can be locked by pressing the chopsticks in the slots in the rim of the. The overlap of the lid prevents it from shifting.

3 2.3. Illustration of the product's system The most important part of the noodles are the, as they form the basis of its unique selling point. The do not only provide a superior use experience when compared to the fiddly pouches in other noodles products, but are also engineered to be biodegradable. The problem with biodegradable materials at this moment is however that consumers are not yet familiar with the concept and throw it away together with other plastics. This hinders conventional recycling, as the processes used are unable to deal with biodegradable plastics. Therefore many producers are sceptical about the development towards biodegradable. In my opinion though consumers need to be educated about the way they have to discard this kind of and the benefits that it carries along with it. The educational function of the can only be successful when the consumer is rewarded for his effort. Therefore discarding the biodegradable in the right way should bring some kind of tangible benefit. In the authentic noodles experience the will be coated with a small layer of herb seeds. The seasoning for example contain chili seeds and the sage & beef soup base are coated with a layer of sage seeds. When the are buried in the soil the starch based glue that encapsulates the seeds will dissolve and provide nutrients for the seeds to grow into seedlings. This fits excellently with the noodles experience as fresh herbs are a keystone of the Asian kitchen. By keeping the herb seeds visible on the the consumer is constantly reminded of the way degradable plastics are supposed to be thrown away. The visibility of the herbs also gives the an authentic and a high quality feel. An illustration of the system behind the can be found on the next page. The business model of the Golden Age Authentic Experience is based on the product line that can be seen on the bottom of the page. In addition to the noodles the line-up contains refill packages that allow buyers to keep using it. The can therefore be seen as a starter kit and aims to be a lifestyle product instead of just a. This fits with the characteristics of the target group, which consists of graduated students and young urban professionals. These people used to buy cheap instant noodles regularly, but now look for a higher quality product. They are well educated, health conscious, socially engaged and environmental aware. In addition to this they are very mobile during their daily lives and travel a lot. These characteristics make them suitable as early adopters of biodegradable, as they function as trendsetters that can convince other consumers to follow their lead. The business model of the Golden Age Authentic Experience can be explained by looking at the added value that is created with regard to people, profit and planet. People who buy the product benefit from this concept in a number of ways. The recipe book that is included contains healthy recipes that can be made with the noodles and gives the buyer the possibility to take these meals with them on their journey or to their work. The booklet also has an educational function, as it contains information about bio-degradable and explains how the can be used. Because there are technical nutrients incorporated in the as well, the buyer is stimulated to return them to the technical. This can be achieved using a take-back program that offers discount on future purchases to reward the buyer for his effort. The planet benefits from this type of as it re-absorbs some of the CO2 that is emitted during production and distribution. The is made from a bamboo composite consisting of bamboo powder and cornstarch. The material is strong, light, dishwasher safe, bio-degradable and mildly anti-bacterial. 5 The Lid is made out of two components. The sealing part consists is made of silicone rubber which is a silicon based polymer. Silicone rubber provides an airtight and hygienic seal and can be red without losing its quality. The see through part of the lid is made from polypropylene. A reusable polymer commonly used in containers for keeping food fresh. The chopsticks are made from bamboo laminate that has been submerged in natural staining agent based on shellac. It gives the bamboo a darker appearance and preserves it. The recipes book is made from solid unbleached sulphate paper that is based on agricultural waste fibers, and printed with biodegradable inks from the Austrian company Gügler. Virgin wood fibers are used as red paper contains toxins that can migrate into the food. The are made from Polylactic acid (PLA), a bio-based and biodegradable polymer. Although PLA does not have the barrier properties required for keeping the seasoning fresh, the can be coated with a small layer of siliconoxide to decrease its permeability for water and oxygen. Coating the with siliconoxide will not compromise the degradability as it is non-toxic and the main ingredient of sand. The film used to seal the is made also made from PLA. The film is translucent, heat-sealable and biodegradable. The film is commercially available under the name Ceramis and is made by Amcor, the industry leader in responsible.
