9 Marsh Folly Composting Facility Tree trimmings and brush, selected organic wastes Approximately 15,000 to 16,000 tonnes per year, Currently no tipping fee Material is ground up and stockpiled or windrow composted Compost is used in various government and private sector developments and given to the public 9

10 Special Wastes Programme Waste paint, waste oil, fluorescent light bulbs, acids, bases, CFCs (ozone depleting chemicals), household batteries, pesticides, any other hazardous materials Special disposal events twice per year, Waste oil containers island wide at gas stations, Household battery deposit tubes at over 140 locations. Shipped to the US according to USEPA standards. 10

11 Waste Education and Enforcement Promotion of 3Rs and proper waste handling Education at schools and businesses Enforcement of the Waste and Litter Control Act Supports Keep Bermuda Beautiful and Manages their grant Helps develop new initiatives in waste reduction and recycling by establishing partnerships with businesses 11

12 Material Recovery Facility (MRF) Designed to sort all of the potential TAG (Tin (12), Aluminium (8), and Glass). Currently processing about 30 tonnes per week of TAG Also processing lead-acid batteries (24), small air conditioning units (15), and Electronic Waste (5) (E-Waste) All materials except glass are exported to US markets. Glass aggregate markets being developed locally (red text indicates number of 20 shipping containers/yr, 21 bales per container) 12

16 Issues Need to improve participation rates and collection system in Recycling (legislation?) Need to Reduce Reliance on Landfill by finding alternative disposal methods for Tyres, Scrap Metal, E-waste Require Stricter and Enforceable Regulations on Littering and Fly-Tipping Need to reduce footprint and eliminate stockpiling of horticultural waste "At Your Service Bermuda" 16
