R&D on Hydrogen and Energy Carriers in Japan Japan Norway Hydrogen Seminar Feb. 28 th, 2017 Shigeru Muraki Program Director for Energy Carriers, Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program(SIP), Cabinet Office, Government of Japan 1

Strategies toward Hydrogen Society Speech by Prime Minister Abe at COP21 The key to acting against climate change without sacrificing economic growth is the development of innovative technologies. To illustrate, there are technologies to produce, store and transport hydrogen towards realizing CO 2 free societies, Strategic Energy Plan April, 2014 Realization of hydrogen society is one of key strategies of Energy Plan. As for future secondary energy, hydrogen is expected to play the central role, as well as electricity and heat. The Strategic Roadmap for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell (formulated in June 2014, revised in March, 2016) Council for Science, Technology and Innovation(CSTI) Hydrogen is one of key areas of CSTI strategies. Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program(SIP) Energy Carrier Program:RD&D for hydrogen related technologies 2

Overview of RD&D projects SIP Energy Carrier Program 5

Recent Achievement Hydrogen-fueled gas turbine(press Released on Dec. 21, 2015) Developed 100% hydrogen-fueled Dry Low Emission (DLE) combustion technology that achieved low-nox combustion without using water and steam. DLE Combustor low-nox Direct ammonia-fueled fuel cell (SOFC) (Press Released on Jul. 22, 2015) Development of ammonia-fueled cell stack (direct supply of ammonia) and successfully generated 200W of electrical power. The performance attained is equivalent to the hydrogen supply type fuel cell. Next stage : Development of 1kW ammonia-fueled SOFC system. The highest performance Fuel cell stack 6

Recent Achievement Ammonia-fueled gas turbine(press Released on Sep. 17, 2015) Successfully power generated by 50kW gas turbine with multi-fuel (NH 3 /CH 4 ) and ammonia fuel (100%NH 3 ) under low NOx emission combustion. Electric power companies joined. The 1 st achievement Next stage : Development of 2MW multi-fueled gas turbine. μ gas turbine Direct combustion of ammonia(industrial furnaces) (Press Released on Oct. 31, 2016) Developed oxygen enriched combustion and staged combustion. Successfully controlled NOx generation below the environmental standard and reinforced the radiative heat flux from the flame. 10kW model furnace 7

Recent Achievement Direct combustion of ammonia(press Released on Oct. 31, 2016) Visualized multi-fuel combustion of pulverized coal and ammonia. To be utilized to solve combustion mechanisms for multi-fuel combustion of pulverized coal and ammonia in coal fired power stations and industrial furnaces. World s first 100mm Luminous flame by released volatile matter combustion Multi-fuel combustion of pulverized coal and ammonia (Press Released on Jan. 10, 2017) Successfully demonstrated 20% ammonia mix combustion in single burner of pulverized coal boiler with Nox level low enough to be treated with the existing denitration equipment. Pulverized coal 微粉炭 World s first Coal particle CO2 20% 760kW(Thermal 減 input) Single シングルバーナー炉 burner boiler Ammonia アンモニア供給 supply Up to 20%(LHV) Next stage : Plan for ammonia mix combustion in the existing coal fired power plant. 8
