ADVANCES IN WASTEWATER TREATMENT Water is the commonest substance on Planet Earth, researchers tell us, but only 2,5% of it is fresh (not salty). And of that minimal resource, two-thirds is locked up in the polar ice caps and thus inaccessible to humans. Strategists warn that, in contrast to past and present times when nations went to war over resources like gold and oil, now there is a growing risk of war over water Who owns the rights to a given river basin? because their very survival depends upon it. With increasing populations demanding evermore water for enhanced lifestyles, many countries not only poor and arid ones, but even prosperous and well-watered countries are seriously considering recycling their waste water to provide for human consumption, agricultural and industrial use. WHY USE A MOBISEWER SYSTEM? Legislative requirements require treatment of sewage on-site before disposal. Ground conditions do not permit infiltration through a conventional soak-away disposal system, especially in densely populated areas. Water shortages requires wastewater recycling for irrigation or industrial process use. Ecologically sensitive environments such as nature reserves necessitate environmental preservation. Industrial effluent producers require pre-treatment prior to discharge to a municipal sewer. INTRODUCTION TO MOBISEWER The MobiSewer RBC was developed by Biobox from the ground up over a period of 5 years to be more efficient, compact, robust and simpler to operate and maintain than any other similar system currently on the market. Drawing from decades of wastewater treatment plant design and operating experience, MobiSewer incorporates numerous patent-pending process innovations, including an optimised Flow Control System (FCS) and the clog-resistant Self-Cleaning Media (SCM). MobiSewer was value engineered to use durable components for a long service life, addressing the common mechanical challenges traditionally associated with RBC s. Biobox is a proud member of SEWPACKSA MobiSewer features an unrivalled 10-year limited warranty.

WHO USES A MOBISEWER SYSTEM? The MobiSewer RBC is a compact, single-piece domestic wastewater treatment plant, designed for new or retrofit small and medium-sized rural or semi-urban communities, with typically 150 or more population equivalents (PE) including: Residential estates and compounds Hotels, resorts and camp grounds Small municipal councils Mining, Military, or Aid Camps Educational institutions with or without boarding facilities Office developments Expanding or rehabilitating existing plants or providing a nutrient removal unit process THE DIFFERENCE IS CLEAR (WATER) NEXT-GENERATION WASTEWATER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY RESIDENTIAL Residential estates not connected to a municipal sewage system, and particularly those with large lawns or gardens such as Golf Estates. COMMERCIAL Remote facilities requiring treatment of domestic sewage including but not limited to offices, schools, clinics, mine change houses, construction camps, housing compounds, petrol stations, shopping centres, and other facilities with ablutions. HOSPITALITY Game lodges, hotels, resorts and camp sites who require treatment of large volumes of wastewater or desire recycled water for irrigation. INDUSTRIAL Rotating Biological Contactors are used in industries producing wastewaters high in biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) including Winery effluents, Petroleum industries, Landfill leachates, Dairies, and Pharmaceutical industries. What makes the MobiSewer RBC process unique is that it has numerous advantages over other package wastewater treatment systems particularly those systems that traditionally operate on the activated sludge principle. With conventional activated sludge systems, a constant flow of air needs to be pumped through aerators by blowers to stimulate bacterial growth. The difference with the MobiSewer design is that it enables the bacteria to receive the necessary air naturally from the atmosphere to support the bacterial growth. This is accomplished by media discs located on a central shaft which rotate at a very low speed due to a reduction gearbox on the motor. In the RBC process, 40% of the discs remain submerged in the wastewater at all times. As the discs rotate, contact with the wastewater causes turbulence and consequently aeration. Because of this recurring process, microorganisms accumulate on the discs. The microorganisms receive oxygen and consume the pollutants existing in the wastewater during the rotation of the discs through the air and liquor respectively, converting these to carbon dioxide and water in a totally natural way. The treated water released from the MobiSewer meets the most rigorous discharge standards internationally, and this recycled water is suitable for reuse through irrigation, for dust suppression, or for direct discharge to a waterway (subject to Environmental Authority approval).

GUARANTEED PERFORMANCE Research indicates that the flow and load characteristics of wastewater has changed during the past three decades. A correctly sized primary tank averts the detrimental effects of modern disinfectants and cleaning materials. To further enhance the process, the MobiSewer features a unique Flow Control System, specifically designed to maintain optimum performance even during shock loadings or hydraulic surges. DIRECT DRIVE The disc assembly rotates through the sewage effluent and supports the growth of a biological matrix. When fully loaded with saturated microorganisms, the disc assembly becomes very heavy, therefore both drive and rotor design are crucial. Biobox and their partners have many years experience in this field. The MobiSewer consists of a number of new features, including, a direct drive motor which is fixed directly to the disc shaft. This removes the necessity for chain or belt drive, reducing and simplifying maintenance. MULTI-PART SHAFT ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION The high specification and reliability of all moving parts ensures a long trouble-free service life of the system. Purpose designed and built in accordance with a 20ft and 40ft High Cube ISO Container, the MobiSewer RBC is cost effective to transport, simple to handle and easy to install either above or below ground. The container dimensions result in significant transport savings when compared to other irregularly sized packaged sewage treatment plants. All steel components are suitably protected against corrosion with materials selected to find the optimal price-quality point. The system was strictly engineered with exhaustive focus on the drive system, rotor design and corrosion protection to counteract the consequences of poor maintenance, irregular overloading and component fatigue. A multi-part shaft has been integrated to simplify maintenance and reduce bearing wear. The new MobiSewer RBC multi-part shaft system supports the rotor in four places rather than two, considerably reducing the load and wear on the shaft and bearings. The bearings are selected for long life and fitted with automatic grease capsules that only require annual replacement. The multi-part shaft simplifies installation by reducing potential drive alignment and bearing wear problems commonly associated with long single-shaft motors. MEDIA The polypropylene MobiSewer Media discs were designed to feature the highest surface area by reactor volume currently available on the market, but to retain a profile which would not clog and be self-cleaning. SINGLE-PHASE ELECTRICAL DESIGN The plant is provided with a three-phase direct-drive motor and comes complete with a control panel with an inversion device included within the panel. This allows a single-phase power supply to the panel to be converted to three phase prior to connection to the drive motor. This design further enables the system to operate from a solar-powered power supply.

DESIGN MobiSewer RBC incorporates all unit processes, including primary settlement, anaerobic digestion, anoxic and aerobic treatment, final settlement, polishing and disinfection in a single vessel. The system can be configured either as a stand-alone unit, or with suitable flow diversion, in parallel unit processes. The patent-pending Flow Control System improves processes performance by buffering peak flows, whilst the tertiary polishing filter features the proven Biorock media to ensure an exceptional final effluent with low suspended solids HOW DOES IT WORK? The MobiSewer RBC is a biological attached growth wastewater treatment system which adapts automatically to organic load and hydraulic flow variations. Key to the operation of each MobiSewer RBC is the Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC), which supports a biologically active film or biomass. This consists of aerobic microorganisms, naturally occurring in the sewage, which break down the pollutants in the wastewater. The Microorganisms develop naturally on the media discs, placed in rotation to form a biological growth medium. While emerged (exposed to air), these bacteria become saturated with oxygen, and while immersed (exposed to the wastewater) they feed on the dissolved organic material Secondary and Tertiary Bioreactors (Aerobic) Wastewater entering these zones is exposed to a further bank of discs on which a matrix of microorganisms grow. Safeguarded from flow variations and harmful contaminants, the bacteria efficiently use the nutrients in the water as a food source. The rotation of the discs create a gentle flow path within the disc zones to move wastewater along the zone while sloughing ageing and surplus biomass from the discs, creating space for new bacteria to develop. 4 1 Primary Settlement Zone (Anaerobic) Wastewater enters the primary settlement tank where the solids and liquids separate. Sludge settles to the bottom, a scum forms on the surface and the liquid containing suspended particles rise upwards and into the Primary Bioreactor. Accumulated sludge should be removed intermittently. 2 3 Primary Bioreactor (Anoxic) The primary bioreactor provides pretreatment where the discs rotating at between 1 and 3 RPM allow oxygen to be absorbed into the developing biofilm and naturally occurring bacteria attach to the discs. Flow Control System The Flow Control System manages the forward flow by means of baling devices attached to the media assembly to transfer a predetermined volume of partially treated effluent into the secondary bioreactor Final Settlement Zone The treated effluent from the bioreactors is displaced into the final settlement zone where suspended solids and active biomass is separated from the liquor and periodically returned to the primary settlement zone. An integrated skimmer removes surface pollutants. The clarifier supernatant is displaced into the Tertiary Polishing Filter. Tertiary Polishing Filter The Biorock Tertiary Polishing Filter further removes residual suspended solids and pollutants without additional energy. In certain applications, the tertiary polishing tank is used as a contact tank with a gravity discharge. Disinfection The final treated effluent is pumped through the automatic UV-disinfection unit Motor Drive UV-Unit Discharge Pump Skimmer and RAS Pump

A MOBISEWER CAN BE FURTHER EXTENDED WITH THESE OPTIONAL SYSTEM COMPONENTS External containerised Primary Settlement Tank (PST) for additional capacity. Packaged pump station with duty/stand-by grinder pumps for very deep sewer inverts, to reticulate wastewater to additional primary settlement tanks or to lift wastewater to an above-ground installation. Microcontroller monitoring and operation unit with GSM, Wifi or Ethernet connectivity to enable remote system management through either a web browser or smartphone. Exterior coating available in various colours to suit installation site (for above-ground installation). FINAL WATER QUALITY The MobiSewer RBC process complies with even the strictest effluent quality standards thanks to its efficient final settlement unit with integrated sludge return and surface skimmer, as well as the Tertiary Polishing Filter. The combination of the MobiSewer RBC process and Biorock Polishing Media allows separation of the treated water and the sludge. The achievement of water of very high quality, beyond most international norms or thresholds required today makes it possible to preserve water by reusing it, via reintroduction into the ground, landscape or agricultural irrigation, or for non-essential or non-hygiene applications such as vehicle wash bays, dust suppression, industrial process water, or similar. Parameter DWS Requirement (General Limits) ph COD (mg/l ) 75 <50 Conductivity (ms/m) Suspended solids (mg/l ) 70 <50 25 <10 Ammonia (mg/l ) 6 <5 Typical MobiSewer Final Effluent* Total Nutrient Removal As an option, the MobiSewer RBC can be configured for total nutrient removal (Nitrogen and Phosphorous) with an optional dosing system. Solar power system for remote installations. Dosing system for ph correction and/ or nitrogen and phosphorous removal. Nitrate (mg/l ) 15 <10 Ortho-Phosphate (mg/l ) 10 <5 * In a biological treatment system, final effluent quality is determined by a variety of factors including influent quality, correct operation and routine maintenance. Commercial Applications Commercial applications such as shopping centres (including butcheries, bakeries, hair salons and printing or photo processing operations), restaurants, bars, laundries and petrol station forecourts (including car wash facilities), place additional stresses on the wastewater treatment process. The sewage strength from the mixture of detergents, cleaners, and chemicals demands a greater treatment capacity than a purely residential application. In such instances Biobox can advise on the best possible treatment and MobiSewer RBC to meet these requirements efficiently and cost-effectively.

WHAT MAKES MOBISEWER UNIQUE No chemicals or additives required Long service life with low operating costs RBC s have a proven track record for high quality performance, reliability and low operational costs, and the new MobiSewer includes a range of features that further enhance this reputation. Treated effluent is of an excellent quality and can be reused for irrigation or process use. Durable coated steel and stainless steel construction, polypropylene and polyethylene components do not require frequent maintenance. Reliable gearbox, motor and pump manufacturers with a proven track record and leading product warranties. MobiSewer does not require the addition of chemicals or microbial additives for effective operation MobiSewer utilises an all-biological treatment process which does not require further additives for normal operation. UV Disinfection is fitted as standard eliminating the need for ongoing chemical disinfection. A correctly-sized primary tank provides dilution, blending and buffering of undesired contaminants, eliminating the requirement for additional dosing systems. Compact & Transport friendly Requires and uses less power MobiSewer uses less power per litre of water treated, which not only saves on operating costs such as electricity, but is kinder to the environment. Can be operated using a solar-power system. Accepts both single-phase or three-phase power source with an integrated inversion device. With only a 250W gearbox and two 370W pumps, it uses less kilowatts per kilolitre of treated water compared to any system of its capacity or in its class. Fully automatic operation and control MobiSewer was designed for autonomous operation with a simple process which doesn t necessitate complicated control logic. Simple operation with high-level, pump and rotor failure alarm. An optional microcontroller with remote monitoring and control system allows monitoring of the MobiSewer across GSM, WiFi or Ethernet through either a web application or smartphone. Automatic grease pots to lubricate bearings and drive system. Whisper operation and Low odour nuisance Whisper-quiet operation and a low odour risk means that the system can be installed in close proximity to facilities, unlike systems using pumps and blowers. No noisy blowers or aerators are required to agitate the wastewater reducing the promotion of foul odours. Due to the fact that the system only requires a reduction gear box and small motor to drive it, MobiSewer RBC systems function silently while consuming much less energy than its competitors. The treatment process relies on passive oxidation which reduces the likelihood of unpleasant odours and vector irritations. Produces less sludge MobiSewer produces less sludge per litre of water treated resulting in a significant operational cost saving. Screenings are captured in the primary tank, eliminating handling, odours and vector nuisances. Unlike conventional sewage treatment processes, the system utilises both a primary settlement tank and the attached growth process, both of which minimise sludge production. Sludge is stored in the primary tank for periodic removal by tanker or drying systems. PATENT pending The system can be shipped and deployed anywhere owing to its international containerised format. MobiSewer provides the highest treatment capacity in the smallest package for the least amount of energy. The entire system comprises a standard 20ft and 40ft High-Cube ISO Container allowing installation in compact areas and handling using standard container equipment. Incorporates additional engineered lifting eyes for unusual lifting and transport situations. No expert operator required The MobiSewer process is simple and robust. No requirement for a plant operator to continuously monitor and maintain the system. Uses the RBC process which is dependable, robust and reliable even under fluctuating loads and flows. Can be operated in rural areas with limited skills. Simple in design and operation A single-piece system with a single inlet, outlet and electrical connection. Patent-Pending self-cleaning Flow Control System and clog-resistant Media. Easy commissioning, ready to operate within hours of delivery, making it ideal for temporary installations. Flexible process and layout Operations change over time. MobiSewer was designed to be adaptable to changes in the operating environment. The RBC process is adaptable and expandable; units are easily added or removed to accommodate changes in demand. Being modular in design enables parallel MobiSewer systems to be suspended in order to reduce treatment capacity at times of lower flow rates, conserving both energy and operating costs. Sludge return from final settlement tank further improves final effluent quality. The sludge return can also be configured to help overcome seasonal flow variations. Safety in simplicity MobiSewer was designed to adhere to the strictest international safety standards. Fully removable and lockable covers to ease maintenance, simplify desludging and provide a safe working environment without the need for a restricted access provision.
