Aims of the Centre Work closely with GEMS/Water national focal points, UNEP Regional Offices and GEWS/Water Regional Hubs to: Encourage and facilitate collection and use of water quality data for national, regional and global water quality assessments to inform and drive policy development Expand national, regional and global capacity in water quality monitoring and assessment Encourage provision of water quality data to GEMStat Support water quality monitoring and assessment in Africa, West Asia, developing regions and countries requesting assistance

Supporting generation of water quality data for global and regional assessments Promoting monitoring of essential water quality variables that will contribute to agreed indicators Encouraging standardisation of approach and monitoring methods for data submitted to GEMStat Standardising training in water quality monitoring and quality assurance for GEMS/Water participants Organising inter laboratory performance evaluation for GEMS/Water participant laboratories

Developing capacity at national and regional level Working with Regional Hubs, water agencies and river basin authorities: Evaluation of monitoring and assessment capabilities and needs Organisation and delivery of training courses and workshops on water quality monitoring and assessment Advice and assistance with monitoring programme design and implementation Assistance and support for development of national and regional water quality networks Advice and assistance with quality assurance of water quality monitoring (field to laboratory) Support for preparation of water quality assessments

Training in water quality monitoring Delivery of training courses for technicians, graduates and trainers (e.g. at university and college level) Exchange of experts for tailor made training and/or advice on development of monitoring programmes, methods, etc. Development and production of technical guidelines and supporting documentation for GEMS/Water monitoring activities Provision of on line accredited training modules and courses

Promoting best practice in water quality monitoring Assistance and/or training in: Appropriate design and implementation Selection of monitoring variables and indicators Choice of monitoring approaches and methods Site selection and frequency of sampling Field and laboratory operations Collection of related and supporting information Quality assurance for all stages

Looking to the future Establish new links with water agencies, river basin authorities, universities and colleges from all world regions Host water scientists and postgraduate students for training in the GEMS/Water Centre in UCC Training in technology supported water management Development of new technology for water quality monitoring Research collaboration to address water resources management issues, including postgraduate students Assistance with curriculum design or ready made modules for undergraduate and MSc programmes Regan et al. 2011
