Sustainable lifestyles to inform development & masterplanning

Aim of my talk What is sustainable? How sustainable lifestyles inform masterplanning

The Challenge Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary General, Our biggest challenge this new century is to take an idea that seems abstract sustainable development and turn it into a reality for all the world s people

Origins of Eco-footprinting human consumption - food, materials & energy can be converted in areas of biologically active land required to produce them Examples: Per annum 25 hectares of fishing grounds / tonne of fish 1.3 hectares of forest / m 3 timber 0.35 hectares forest / tonne CO 2 from fossil fuels

Planet Earth s Productive Capacity cropland 1.3 billion hectares grazing land 4.6 forest 3.3 fishing grounds 3.2 built up areas 0.2 TOTAL 12.6 billion hectares

Global Biocapacity versus Consumption

Bringing it home global target hectares per person UK footprint 6 hectares per person + + =?

Where do carbon emissions come from? UK Average % of total CO 2 emissions Space heating in the home 3 Hot water 4 Appliances in the home 3 Personal transport 18 Embodied energy in home infrastructure 3 Waste and consumer items 13 Food 24 Shared services 12 (total energy for running schools, hospitals, financial services, etc) Shared infrastructure (energy for constructing schools, hospitals, roads, airports, etc) 20

Where to savings come from at BedZED? % reduction CO 2 footprint Wood CHP (if operating fully) 16 Green Transport Plan 11 Food ( increase in local seasonal 4 produce / lower animal protein ) Waste and recycling (assuming 3 30% increase in recycling) Super -insulation 2 South-facing conservatories 1 Water efficient appliances 1 reducing hot water use Energy efficient appliances 1 Photovoltaics 1 Total 40

Indicative capex to achieve savings to be taken in wider context tpa/person Capex per tonne ( ) Green Transport Wood-fired CHP ,100 Appliances ,800 Thermal saving ,275 PV ,150 Not to say we shouldn t fit PV for example but we should understand the cost-benefit equations

Solar orientation as a driver for masterplanning? Do you save energy by facing south? East-west light for wellbeing? Solar acess for public space and gardens? Are other drivers more important such as making streets legible and make local shops work well?
