1 Hydrostor Terra TM Advanced Compressed Air Energy Storage

2 Hydrostatic pressure naturally created by water at depth makes Hydrostor Terra TM one of the cleanest, most economical bulk energy storage solutions available today. Hydrostor Terra TM is true bulk energy storage that addresses the issues of renewable intermittency, grid load balancing, reserve capacity, peak shaving and T&D congestion. Hydrostor s Advanced Compressed Air Energy Storage (A-CAES) technology leverages a purposebuilt, in-ground cavern for emissions-free bulk energy storage. With proven components from Tier 1 OEM manufacturers, our clients have confidence that the Hydrostor system will perform reliably for the life of the equipment, with support from a global service network. We use proven construction techniques that minimize risk and environmental disturbance, as well as a superior thermal management system that maximizes our efficiency. Hydrostor and have partnered to jointly develop, market and construct A-CAES systems globally. How A-CAES works Hydrostor s A-CAES converts electricity to compressed air, which is stored in an underground air accumulator until needed for generation. The heat generated when compressing the air is captured and stored for use during generation, known as Adiabatic CAES. This adiabatic operation increases the system s efficiency and eliminates the need for additional heat from fossil fuels (and the associated costs and emissions). To satisfy the need for electricity, the system reverses the air flow, allowing hydrostatic pressure to force the air out of the Terra TM and back to the surface where the stored heat is added back into the air stream. The now-heated air travels through a turbo expander that drives a generator, which efficiently converts the energy stored in the air back into electricity for the consumer. Applications Flexible peaking plant generation Integrate renewables to on-demand discharge Transmission decongestion Reserve capacity Ancillary services 1

3 Hydrostor Terra TM Shown below, a typical Terra TM site would be located near a local water body. This location allows water to easily flow in-and-out of the Terra TM via piping as the pressurized air is added, stored and released. The water in the Terra TM shaft and cavity holds the air under pressure until ready for generation.
