2 To Parents: The Electric Cooperatives of Oklahoma want to help you in assisting your child with these Bright Ideas for Staying Safe. This activity book is designed for you and your child to read and talk about together. Please take time to help your child understand the benefits and dangers of electricity. When your child reads and completes this book, he or she will earn a certificate from your local Electric Cooperative. It s their way of helping your son or daughter grow up smart and safe. 4 Hi, I m CFL Charlie! I m a Compact Fluorescent Light bulb. That means I use less energy and last 10 times longer than regular bulbs.

5 Energy is... the ability to do work or perform tasks - like walking the dog or picking up a pencil. This type of energy is fueled by the food we eat. We also use energy in our homes and schools to power the lights and heating - cooling systems. This type of energy is fueled by electricity.

6 Electric power companies, like Touchstone Energy cooperatives, make the electricity and transport it to your home so you can have lights, play your video games and more Electrical Safety a. Always ask a grown-up for help when you need to use something that uses electricity. b. Don't yank or pull cords from a wall. c. Ask a grown-up to put safety caps on all unused electrical outlets. d. Keep electrical stuff away from water. Water and electricity don't mix. e. Watch out for power lines. Never touch a power line, especially if there is one that may have fallen down.

7 A-Maze Your Mind! Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFLs) use 70% less energy than regular light bulbs. They also last up to 10 times longer! Follow the maze though the CFL to energy savings. START! FINISH!

8 Saving Energy and Electricity is Important. That s why I m here to help you become a Super Energy Saver. 1 2 Turn off the lights, TV and unplug video games when you are done using them. Don t hold the refrigerator door open. 3 4 Ask your mom or dad to adjust your water heater and heating and cooling system. It can save lots of money. Don t forget to change light bulbs to CFLs like me!

9 Search for Energy Savings Energy is what keeps your food cold in the refrigerator. When you stand with the door open, you re letting out all the cold air. 12 SUPER ENERGY SAVER Checklist Finish this checklist and return it to your teacher and you ll be an official Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Super Energy Saver. Make sure you get mom or dad to help you so they can be energy savers too. Good luck! TURN OFF ALL THE LIGHTS every time you leave the room. SHUT DOWN THE COMPUTER when you are done using it. UNPLUG ELECTRONICS like cell phones, video games and televisions when not in use. SET YOUR THERMOSTAT to 78 in the summer and 68 in the winter. DON T HOLD THE REFRIGERATOR DOOR OPEN for long periods of time. CHECK WINDOWS AND DOORS FOR AIR LEAKS. SUPER ENERGY SAVER BONUS: Count the number of CFL light bulbs you have in your house. If you don t have any, ask your mom or dad if you can buy some the next time you are at the store. Total number of CFLs
