2 and the Climate Challenge Global temperatures are increasing and science has confirmed that we must limit the rise to under 2 C in order to avoid the most serious consequences for people, the environment and economies worldwide. Direct emissions from transportation account for nearly 25% of global energy-related CO 2 emissions. As people around the world increasingly move into the middle-class society, car ownership levels will rise, and the corresponding increase in economic activity will increase emissions from aviation, maritime and trucking. Although the increase in electric cars using renewable energy will help reduce emissions from light vehicle transportation, liquid fuels will be the most likely main alternative for personal transportation for a long time to come. Hydrocarbon fuels will be the most likely choice for aviation, maritime and trucking for the main part of this century. Given these conditions, it is essential that we seek to replace fossil fuels with advanced biofuels that reduce CO 2 emissions by at least 50%. A significant increase in the sustainable production and use of advanced biofuels will be required over the next years to decouple the expected increase in CO 2 emissions from growth in global transportation demand. Development of a new advanced biofuels market will speed up emissions reductions, recruit investment into the sector and drive the growth of high-tech green jobs across the globe. Scaling up in the context of the UNFCCC COP21 in Paris After years of R&D, new fuel-production technologies are now beginning deployment in new production facilities around the globe, but there is considerable opportunity to accelerate and scale up their dissemination. The LCTPi consists of companies from across the technology spectrum that are collaborating to scale up carbon sparing technologies to help meet global energy demand in a climate sensitive way. The LCTPi will: Demonstrate that advanced biofuels can reduce emissions while helping to meet increasing demand for global transportation Identify and activate appropriate national and international policies to support sustainable growth of the new sector Demonstrate novel partnerships and models that will attract new investment Provide scalable project opportunities for rapid execution through public-private-partnership initiatives 25

4 COP21 and the LCTPi About COP21 and the LCTPi In December 2015, a global climate agreement will be brokered at COP21, the Paris Climate Change Conference. This is a key moment for all stakeholders to contribute to decisive climate action. Launched in Lima in partnership with SDSN and IEA, LCTPi is supported by the French Presidency of COP21 and is part of the Lima-Paris Action Agenda. It aims to present action plans at COP21 that will accelerate low-carbon technology and scale up the deployment of business solutions consistent with the 2 C objective. LCTPi is a collaborative platform, gathering together project teams and stakeholders to discuss and agree the concrete actions that are needed. It focuses on solutions that are beyond business as usual. It is a unique opportunity to showcase how your business can and is tackling climate change. To ensure the development and implementation of business solutions that address climate change, we must: Remove the barriers that are preventing existing solutions from being deployed Develop new solutions to complement existing ones 27
