We suggest installing unins and ball valves (nt included) n the inlet and utlet f the Heat Pump fr easier installatin and remval f the Heat Pump frm the system fr maintenance r repair (if necessary). Be sure that the water flw thrugh yur Aqua Lgic Heat Pump ges int the water inlet (bttm) and ut the tp t prevent ptential damage (see illustratin). If yu use flexible hse t plumb yur system r cnnect yur Heat Pump, make sure that the hse is nt kinked t prevent restricted flw and ptential damage t yur Heat Pump. Avid elbws in yur plumbing t minimize flw lss thrugh yur system. Fr mst efficient peratin, we recmmend the minimum and maximum flw rates listed in the specificatins sheet fr each mdel. D NOT perate the Heat Pump withut adequate water flw. Cndenser and Evapratr Water in and utlets Electrical Hkup: We suggest using a dedicated pwer circuit fr best peratin and lngest life f the Heat Pump. The circuit must be rated t handle the maximum lad f the Heat Pump. We highly recmmend that yu use a grund-fault interrupter (GFI) t avid electrical shck. Yu can btain an inline GFI frm Aqua Lgic, a lcal hardware stre if the utlet in the wall des nt have a GFI installed. Avid using an extensin crd n yur Heat Pump. 6 When Disaster Strikes Yu may have a lt f mney invested in yur aquarium at hme r in the ffice. Or yu may have valuable dllars invested in seafd fr yur stre r restaurant. Unfrtunately, equipment r electricity may fail at the mst inpprtune time. What can yu d t minimize the risk in such an event? Based upn ur years f experience in the aquatic life supprt industry, we recmmend the fllwing: Always have ALL f the electrical equipment cnnected t grund fault interrupt (GFI) circuits. D nt verlad electrical circuits. Add the aquarium system and livestck t yur hmewner s r renter s insurance plicy if allwable. Mnitr yur system clsely during the first few weeks f peratin. Make sure that everything is wrking crrectly. Call it a shakedwn cruise. Check the cnditin f yur equipment regularly. Keep it clean. Yu dn t take yur car n a lng trip withut first changing the il, checking the tires, etc. Why wuld yu ignre maintaining the equipment n yur aquarium? Keep blue ice r bags f ice in the freezer. If yu use ice t help maintain water temperature, leave the ice in the bag s that the water frm the melting ice desn t dilute the water slutin in yur aquarium. Turn ff aquarium lights if the Heat Pump fails. Livestck in the wild have perids f several days when they d nt get intense light. There ARE typhns that can cver an area fr days at a time. Limited use f VHO and halide lamps t avid heat build-up in the tank is far less harmful than extremely high water temperatures. Put a temperature cntrller n the lights t shut them ff and t sund ff an alarm if water temperature rises mre than 5 F abve the Heat Pump set pint. Keep a spare pump n hand in case yur primary pump fails. Maintain a supply f ammnia-neutralizing chemicals such as Amquel. Yu can use them t cntrl ammnia in yur system during a prlnged pwer utage. Be sure t fllw manufacturer s dsage recmmendatins and cmpatibility with rganisms in yur tank. Stck yur aquarium sparingly. Then when disaster strikes (and it usually will sner r later), yu have mre time t fix the prblem befre yu lse livestck. Oversize yur filtratin system. Water quality is the mst critical element fr maintaining healthy fish. On a reef tank, it is easy t invest thusands f dllars fr livestck (nt including hw sentimental yu may be attached t yur livestck). Why nt spend a little mre up frnt fr mre life supprt reserve in case f a disaster? Have a battery-pwered air pump n hand fr extended pwer utages. It will prvide aeratin and mve water in the absence f pwer. In mst areas f the cuntry, ur electrical grid is subjected t surges, spikes, brwnuts and blackuts caused by high peak usage, snwstrms, hurricanes, thunderstrms and mre. A surge prtectr can help with the surges and spikes but they are nt effective in brwnuts. Furthermre, even the best surge prtectr can t prtect against direct strikes f lightning. It takes an uninterruptible pwer supply (UPS) r backup generatrs t prtect against lw vltage and blackuts. And it takes a backup generatr t adequately pwer a Heat Pump especially a ½-HP unit needed n a 300-galln tank. It is very unfrtunate when equipment fails. Hwever, a prudent aquarist shuld have a disaster plan and fllw the mtt, Be prepared. 6

There is n scheduled maintenance and there are nly tw prcedures that can be perfrmed by the user. Cleaning: The cndenser shuld be cleaned ccasinally t remve accumulated rganic material r minerals frm the cil. T see whether the cndenser needs t be cleaned, shine a flashlight thrugh in the water inlet side f the Heat Pump. Yu may als need t remve accumulated rganic material r minerals frm the cil (Evapratr). Organic material may be remved by using a mild chlrine bleach slutin while minerals may be remved by using a dilute muriatic acid slutin, Lime-A-Way r ther hard water depsit remver. Warning: D NOT perfrm bth prcedures at the same time since the cmbinatin f chlrine and acid may cause serius injury r death. Be sure t wear apprpriate prtective gear. Use extreme cautin when using caustic chemicals arund yur system. T remve accumulated rganics (slime): Remve pwer frm the Heat Pump. Wear prtective eyewear, clthing and glves. Mix a slutin f 1 part unscented chlrine bleach t 4 parts water. Use a small pump, pail and hses t run the slutin thrugh the heat exchanger fr abut 10 minutes t flush the rganic materials ut. Rinse the heat exchanger with clear unchlrinated water until yu can n lnger smell chlrine. Allw the heat exchanger t dry and then return the Heat Pump t service. T remve accumulated minerals: Remve pwer frm the Heat Pump. Wear prtective eyewear, clthing and glves. Prepare a slutin accrding t cleaning prduct instructins.
