1 American Society of Civil Engineers Newsletter March 2008 MARCH REGULAR MEETING MARCH PROGRAM DETAILS WHEN Tuesday, March 11, 2008 Check-in/Social 11:30 a.m. Lunch/Program 12:00 1:00 p.m. LOCATION Wedgewood Banquet Center Buenaventura Golf Course 5880 Olivas Park Drive, Ventura, CA Ventura Avenue Water Treatment Plant Membrane Filtration Project Construction has recently been completed on the City of Ventura s Avenue Water Treatment Plant, Membrane Filtration project. The $22,000,000 project entirely replaced the existing treatment plant with a new 10 million gallon per day Membrane Filtration Facility. The work included new chemical feed and storage facilities, new wash water recovery systems, sludge drying beds, source water pump station, and comprehensive SCADA and security systems. The centerpiece of the plant is a ZeeWeed 1000 membrane filtration system, developed by Zenon Environmental Inc. of Ontario, Canada. Pretreated groundwater is drawn through thousands of membrane fibers that have a pore size of 0.02 microns, far smaller than harmful particles like giardia and cryptosporidium. This APWA award-winning project was completed ahead of schedule and under the City s budget. The presentation will be provided by the City s Water Superintendent, Jim Passanisi; and the project s Construction Manager, Steve Mimiaga. 4 The Ventura County Watershed Protection District has a limited number of openings in a streambank stabilization course attended by their engineering managers and senior engineers. This two day course is being offered beginning March 25 and 26 at the Ventura County Government Center. Cost is $400 for both days. The Instructor, Dr. David Williams, has extensive experience in sediment transport modeling and streamback protection design in his work with West Consultants, HDR, and currently PBS&J. If you wish to reserve a slot in this class, please contact Mark Bandurraga as soon as possible. Checks for the course will be due by March 14. Predicting Bed Scour for Toe Protection Design for Bank Stabilization Projects. In this course you will learn the concepts of channel stability analysis, causes and characteristics of bank scour, how to recognize various types of toe failures, and how to perform assessment of vertical and lateral stability and understand their influence on toe scour. You will also gain knowledge on evaluating various design methods, determining which toe protection method is applicable, and making recommendations for inspection and maintenance. In addition, the influence of channel bends on scour depth and length of protection and a brief discussion of other toe design features are discussed. Will also cover bendway weir design and other innovative techniques used for bank protection in the Southwest.
