An Environmental Product Declaration EPD describes a product throughout its entire life cycle all relevant environmental information from cradle to grave 15

EPD schemes for building products Expanding into a L 3/16/

Standardized Environmental Product Declarations The IBU-EPD system Expanding into a Environmental Product Declaration EPD The declaration includes documentation on the product, its life cycle, the ecological footprint as well as the result of the ecological assessment Based on independently verified manufacturer data Procedure and fundamentals are defined in the Product Category Rules (PCR) Rules for the elaboration are defined by the program holder and to be followed according to EN In Germany information on over 2000 products in ca. 170 EPDs are available 3/16/

Standardized Environmental Product Declarations The IBU-EPD system Expanding into a FprEN already implemented into the programme PCR part A: general guidance for LCA PCR part B: product specific guidance for EPD content and layout Two types of EPDs possible: EPD with content according to FprEN EPD with content according to FprEN and additional IBU requirements (e.g. evidences, further product description etc.) 3/16/

Decision for EPD Product specific requirements Product Category Rule (PCR) available Yes No IBU organizes Product Group Forum and public consultation (participate: producers, public, verification board) PCRs include guidelines which must be complied with while setting up an EPD PCR Calculate LCA, write LCA report and prepare EPD Verification of EPD through independent verifier defined by IBU Background report EPD 20

Introduction Life cycle Assessment (LCA) Principle Expanding into a 21

Functional Unit (FU) = 1 m³ or 1 m² can be selected as the declared unit for coated panels if conversion to 1 m³ is depicted transparently. Time frame Type of EPD; number of products, production sites. System boundary : cradle to gate oder cradle to grave Declared Module according to EN 15804? 22

Collection of Inputs: Raw materials, Energy, Water; Outputs: produced Expanding into a product, by products, waste, emissions etc.) We need eventually the specifications and properties of the materials or inputs (MSDS) Two possibilities for the deliver of informatiion: 1. Blackbox 2. In Detail (each process step ) Properties (Density, Humidity, Dry content etc.) Components Origin/Transport Material 1 Material 2 Material 3 Material 4 Material 5 23

Process 1 Expanding into a Process 2 Process 3 Blackbox vs. Detailed Data collection Process 4 Packaging/Delivery? Use phase EoL 24

Raw materials etc. Mode of transport and distance Products or by products Additives, Chemicals, Pigments Waste generation and transport (disposal or recycling) Auxiliaries and operating materials (knives, steel plates, etc) Emissions in air Power, Thermal Energy, Water waste water treatment? Packaging from input materials 25

Standardized Environmental Product Declarations Content of an IBU-EPD Expanding into a 3/16/

Global warming potential (GWP) Depletion potential of the stratospheric ozone layer (ODP) Acidification potential of land and water (AP) Eutrophication potential (EP) Formation potential of tropospheric ozone photochemical oxidants (POCP) Abiotic depletion potential for non fossil resources (ADP elements) Abiotic depletion potential for fossil resources (ADP fossil fuels) Input of renewable primary energy (energy resources) excluding feedstock Input of renewable feedstock Total input of renewable primary energy (resources and feedstock) Input of non renewable primary energy (energy resources), excluding feedstock Input of non renewable feedstock Total input of non renewable primary energy (resources and feedstock) Input of secondary material Input of renewable secondary fuels Input of non renewable secondary fuels Input of net fresh water Hazardous waste disposed Non hazardous waste disposed Radioactive waste disposed Components for re-use Materials for recycling Materials for energy recovery Exported energy 28

EPD document Expanding into a Publication of the EPD in the IBU Homepage Detailed Background report Optional: LCA model of product for further analyses Optional: Electronic xml-dataset published in LCA databases for architects, planers, 29

1_Buildings 2_Environmental Product Declaration - EPD 3_Benefits and Use of EPDs 30

Understand your customers expectations on sustainability Use LCA results for Eco-Design Focus on using less energy, producing less production waste / higher resource productivity Assess production alternatives Use LCA results to green your supply chain Develop KPIs e.g. for Environmental Management Systems Develop a roadmap for Greening your Company / Association 31

Use EPD for Eco-Marketing and reliable environmental communication Communicate what you learn from the LCA project Use less energy, enhance resource productivity, green your supply chain Get your results into databases: GaBi, ESUCO, Ökobau.dat, DGNB Navigator reference databases for building-lcas Provide EPD to planners actively support sustainable building certification processes 32
