OUTLINE: 1. What are GREEN Buildings? 2. How does the GREEN point systems work? 3. How does stone, sand and gravel fit in? Green Building & LEED Requirements 2
What are GREEN Buildings? Empire State Building $558 Million renovation, LEED Existing Buildings Gold Green Building & LEED Requirements 3
What are GREEN Buildings? U. S. Treasury Building , $3.5 Million savings/ year, LEED Existing Buildings Gold Green Building & LEED Requirements 4

GREEN Building Growth Programs started as private sector competitive initiative. Green programs quickly expanded into the Federal, State and Local government sectors through tax incentives. Building codes are now being revised. Green Building & LEED Requirements 6
GREEN Building Certifications 14 Federal Agencies Fossil Fuel Free by 2030 ZERO! All leasing after mid-2010 must be in ENERGY STAR labeled buildings An Office of High-Performance Green Buildings was established within the Government Services Administration Each federal agency must appoint an Energy Manager Green Building & LEED Requirements 7
GREEN Building Certifications 45 States CalGreen - The California Building Standards Commission approved the first statewide green building code. Took effect January 2011, the nation's first mandatory green building code. High performance building must achieve at least a Silver LEED rating. Or achieve at least Two Globe rating according to Green Globes Green Building & LEED Requirements 8

GREEN Building Certifications Over 723 Jurisdictions 276 Cities, 55 counties, and 121 towns. At least 43 million, or 25.6% of the population live in a county with a green building program. City Programs - Los Angeles, Dallas, Austin, San Francisco, Houston Green Building & LEED Requirements 10

Green Products have Their Own Certifications Green Building & LEED Requirements 23
Green Products have Their Own Standards / Certifications 1 st Party Standards / Specifications (individual offers a product, self certifying) GreenSpec Directory 2 nd Party Standards / Specifications (individual belongs to an organization that offers certification) Energy Star, WaterSense, Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) 3 rd party Standards / Specifications (certifying agency is independent) Cradle to Cradle, Green Seal, GREENGUARD, Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) Green Building & LEED Requirements 24

Sustainable SItes This credit focuses on restoring project site elements, integrating the site with local and regional ecosystems. Green Building & LEED Requirements 26
Sustainable Sites Examples in San Antonio, TX area quarries: San Antonio Zoo Japanese Tea Garden Six Flags Fiesta Texas Shops at La Cantera (which means quarry in Spanish) The Rim shopping center Trinity University, and a variety of sports complexes, including several golf courses. Green Building & LEED Requirements 27
Sustainable Sites Other re-use possibilities: Solar collectors Wind Farm Reservoirs Green Building & LEED Requirements 28
Materials and Resources Credit focuses on minimizing the embodied energy and other impacts associated with extraction, processing, transport, maintenance and disposal of building materials. Supports a life-cycle approach that improves performance and promotes resource efficiency. Green Building & LEED Requirements 29
Stone, Sand and Gravel Products Concrete aggregates Asphalt fillers and extenders Crushed stone base materials Finish materials (flooring, walls, countertops, etc.) Filler (carpets, drywall, etc.) Waterfront shoring - rip rap. Landscaping decorative, soil amendments (lime). Septic Systems Permeable paving Green Building & LEED Requirements 30
Location Valuation Factor Added value to locally produced products. Products and materials that are extracted, manufactured and purchased within 100 miles Valued at 200% of their cost if they meet distance requirements and at least one sustainable criteria Valued at 100% of their cost if they meet sustainability but not distance. Distance is measured as the crow flies. Green Building & LEED Requirements 31
Green Building & LEED Requirements 32
Recycling Credit for recycling of products removed during demolition that are re-used: Road base materials Landscaping Concrete aggregate Paving Green Building & LEED Requirements 33
Recycling tons tons tons tons tons Green Building & LEED Requirements 34
Life Cycle Assessment A compilation and evaluation of the inputs and outputs and the potential environmental impacts of a product system throughout its life-cycle. The entire process is examined cradle to grave - raw materials extraction, including transportation, use, maintenance and end of life (recycling/re-use) ISO International Standard, Environmental management, Life cycle assessment, principles and framework (Geneva, Switzerland: International Organization for Standardization, 2006).
