14 Mandalay Bay Convention Center Chooses Flex for Lighting Upgrade Company: MGM International Resorts Partner: UBM Location: Las Vegas, NV Building: Convention Center, 1M sq ft Project: MGM International and UBM, one of the world s largest event organizers, joined forces in a strategic partnership to improve the lighting of the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, while reducing the enviromental footprint and energy usage to meet their sustainability goals. Challenge: Chris Magee, VP of sustainable facilities at MGM was searching for an LED lighting solution that would offer increased light levels, higher quality of light, and a customized lighting control capability to replace their 1,000+ high output T5 linear fixtures. Solution: In order to increase light levels by 300%, Mandalay Bay installed 1,600 Essentials Series LED high bays featuring integrated wireless controls that allowed them the highest flexibility, meeting their energy savings and sustainability requirements. Results: The new lighting system is estimated to reduce energy consumption by 85%, saving enough energy to power 400 average US homes and prevent 900 Metric Tons of greenhouse gases (CO2E) each year. Within the next 10 years there will no longer be a need to replace 26,898 fluorescent lamps, boxed them a second time and then transported to other states for recycling. This higher quality lighting system will help Mandalay Bay Convention Center and MGM Resorts International achieve significant energy savings. 15 Minneapolis Convention Center Saves 72% Energy with Essentials Series LED High Bays Company: Minneapolis Convention Center Partner: JTH Lighting Alliance Location: Minneapolis, MN Building: Convention Center Project: The Minneapolis Convention Center (MCC) was looking to upgrade the lighting in its exhibition area from traditional lighting sources to LED to meet their energy savings goals and provide better light. Challenge: The previous lighting system in the MCC s Exhibition Hall A, the first area of the MCC to be upgraded, included 418 metal halide fixtures operating an average of 4,380 hours per year and 622 halogen incandescent fixtures operating an average of 800 hours per year resulted in more than 1,080,000 kwh of energy consumed. At an average utility cost of $0.09/kWh, MCC was spending approximately $97,000 per year to illuminate this exhibition area, not to mention the higher costs of maintenance and cooling costs commonly associated with metal halide and halogen light fixtures. Solution: After studing various manufacturers MCC chosed to team up, with the Essentials Series 6M fixtures of 35,000 lumen output. The installation included lighting controls at the individual fixture level allowing selective programming of lighting areas only when and where needed in the large spaces. 16 Qatar National Exhibition Centre, Lit with Flex Lighting, Earns LEED Gold Certification Company: Qatar National Foundation Partner: Burns & McDonell Location: Doha, Qatar Building: Convention Center Project: Extension of the Qatar National Exhibition Center, that would add 2.5M additional square feet. Under the general direction of the Qatar National Foundation (the primary investment vehicle of the Al Thani royal family) and specific wishes of Her Highness Sheikha Mo-zah bin Nasser Al-Missned, the extension had to be built in a manner that would achieve an LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Gold rating something that had never been accomplished by a convention center. Challenge: Burns & McDonnell challenged Flex to develop a solid-state lighting solution that could be mounted at 12 m (40 ft), withstand a constant ceiling temperature of 46 C (115 F) and deliver at least 50 footcandles with the efficacy required to meet LEED Gold requirements. Solution: exceeded all of the requirements with 60 fc at 92 watts and was listed as the specified LED fixture for a total quantity of 4,750.
