2 Austria: New Production Line for Solar Collectors Opened The world's most modern and fastest solar collectors production line was opened in St. Veit/Glan, Carinthia. Companies GREENONE TEC and SONNENKRAFT invested a total of 4 million in the facility. The new line can make up to 450,000 collectors per year. The speed of the line was achieved thanks to using four robots and the fact that the production is fully automated. Seven workers per shift work at the facility. The firm has already started construction works on the power plant. Upon its completion, the biogas facility will produce approximately 5 million cubic metres (176.6millioncubic feet) of biogasper year, to be fedintothegrid of Germanenergyprovider N-ERGIE. Localfarmerswill provide corn, plantand grass silage as well as cover crop, needed for the production process. SCHMACK and N-ERGIE developed the project plan last year and did some preparatory works. One of the investors in the biogas plant is E.ON BAYERN, subsidiary of German utility E.on AG. Since January 2010, SCHMACK GmbH is part of German heating systems manufacturer VIESSMANN GROUP. 5 Scotland: BIB COCHRAN Rescued by New Foreign Investment A long-established boiler manufacturer in Scotland is set to expand after being bought out of administration. BIB COCHRAN, based in Annan in Dumfrieshire, had been forced to call in administrator BAKER TILLY after Malaysian parent company MECHMAR said it could no longer provide necessary investment capital. The company was sold Kong. to boiler maker SHANGHAI HUANUAN BOILER VESSEL based in Hong During the administration period the jobs of the 170 staff at the plant had been in doubt, but now the new management has indicated that the future is secure. New investor plan is to invest in new technologies while maintaining the manufacturing expertise in Scotland. The intention is to maintain manufacturing capacity in Annan. SHBV sees Annan as being the headquarters of further development of combustion, heat recovery, biomass and other boiler technologies. The UK business will manage all aspects of interface with our worldwide network of agents, distributors and customers. A newly formed company, COCHRAN, has acquired the business and its assets following our appointment, with 170 employees being transferred to it. Source: 5

6 United Kingdom: BRITISH GAS to Install Free Solar Panels in Schools BRITISH GAS will donate and install solar panels worth between Å20,000 and Å40,000 per school - in up to 750 schools. Each school will be able to generate its own free, green electricity, cutting as much as 20% off its annual electricity bill. The energy produced by the panels is anticipated to create around Å1.3 million per year for the next 25 years. This will be reinvested in installing solar panels on yet more schools. This means that, in the next five years alone, BRITISH GAS could install free solar panels on a total of 1,100 schools. The panels will also help the selected schools to meet their carbon reduction targets, reducing emissions by up to 1,400 tons per year, equivalent to taking almost 400 cars off the road. The schools receiving solar panels will receive a smart meter, offering real time information so pupils can see the difference their solar panels are making. 7 World: Renewables Dominate New Power in Europe, US More than half of all new electricity capacity added in the United States and Europe last year was from renewable power such as wind and solar. European leaders signed up in March 2007 to a binding EU-wide target to source 20% of their energy needs from renewables, including biomass, hydro, wind and solar power, by To meet this objective, EU leaders agreed a new directive on promoting renewable energies, which set individual targets for each member state. Last year was also a record year for the amount of new green power added to the grid, partly a result of shifting deployment and manufacturing from flagging developed countries to emerging economies including Brazil, India and China. In 2009, China produced 40% of the world's solar PV supply, 30% of the world's wind turbines, up from 10% in 2007, REN21, or the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century. REN21, launched in 2005, is supported by the International Energy Agency (IEA) - which advises 28 industrialised countries - and by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Of an extra 80 gigawatts (GW) of new renewable power capacity added Worldwide, China added 37 GW, more than any other country, said the study, titled 'Renewables 2010: Global Status Report'. Despite the impact of the financial crisis and lower oil prices, renewablecapacitygrew at ratesclose to those in previous years, including solar photovoltaic (PV) power at 53% and wind power at 32%. Grid-connected solar PV power had grown by an average of 60% every year for the past decade, increasing 100-fold since Germany was the top market for solar PV, with 3.8 GW added, or more than half the global market. Spain, the world leader in 2008, saw installations plunge to a low level in 2009 after a policy cap was exceeded. For wind power, China was the top market, with 13.8 GW added, representing more than a third of the world market. The United States was second, with 10 GW added. In Sweden, biomass accounted for a larger share of energy supply than oil for the first time. That boom has been largely on the back of support in European countries, where a recent pullback following recession has raised investor jitters. But the wind and solar sectors were still poised for a record year in 2010, operators and investors say. While China is making great strides in renewable energy deployment, its carbon emissions also accelerated in 2009 placing it further ahead as the world's top emitter of the main greenhouse gas blamed for climate change.
