7 TECHNOLOGY NOTE Electrochlorinators are based on the priciple of Electrolysis. The salt solution or sea water is electrolyzed to produce Sodium Hypochlorite. In the Electrolyser, current is passed through the anode and cathode in the salt solution, which is a good conductor of electricity, thus electrolysing the salt solution. This results in chlorine (Cl 2) gas being produced at the anode, while sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and hydrogen (H 2) gas is produced at the cathode. The reactions that take place in the electrolytic cell is: 2 NaCl + 2 H2O 2 NaOH + Cl 2+ H2 The chlorine further reacts with the hydroxide to form sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). This reaction can be simplified in the following manner: Cl 2+ 2 NaOH NaCl + NaClO + H2O The solution generated has a ph value between 8 and 8.5, and a maximum equivalent chlorine concentration of less than 8 g/l. It has a very long shelf life which makes it suitable for storage. After dosing the solution into the water flow, no ph value correction is necessary, as is often required in sodium hypochlorite produced by the membrane method. The sodium hypochlorite solution reacts in a balance reaction, resulting in hypochlorous acid: NaClO + H2O NaOH + HClO To produce 1kg equivalent of chlorine using on-site Sodium Hypochlorite generator, 4.5 kg of salt and 4 kilowatt hours of electricity is required. The final solution consists of approximately 0.8% (8 grams/liter) sodium hypochlorite. 10 8 BENEFITS OF ELECTROCHLORINATION (ON-SITE SODIUM HYPOCHLORITE GENERATOR) Simple: Only water, salt and electricity is required Non Toxic: Common salt, the main requirement of the system are non toxic and easy to store. Electro chlorinators provide the power of Chlorine without the dangers of storing or handling a hazardous material. Low Cost: As water, common salt and electricity are the only requirements; the total operating cost of an electrochlorinator is less than conventional chlorination methods. Easy to dose to get a standard concentration: Sodium hypochlorite generated on-site does not degrade like commercial sodium hypochlorite. Therefore, the dosage need not be modified daily based on the strength of the hypo solution. It is an approved disinfection method which complies with global drinking water regulations and requires less safety requirements as compared to chlorine-gas-based systems Long service life, as compared to the membrane cell electrolyzer. On-site generation of sodium hypochlorite allows the operator to produce only what is needed and when it is needed. Safe for the environment by reducing carbon emissions. Very efficient in protecting the equipment from the growth of micro organic fouling, algae and crustaceans. Compact Electrochlorinators manufactured by Pristine Water are ideal for disinfection of water during disasters like earthquakes, floods and epidemics. These electrochlorinators are designed for rural and village 'point -of- use' disinfection of drinking water.

9 APPLICATIONS DISINFECTION BIO FOULING CONTROL & ALGAE PREVENTION Drinking water Ballast Water Food & Beverage Effluent,Waste Water and Marine Sewage Treatment Recreational water Sea Water Intake & Pre Treatment Plant For Thermal Power Plants And Desalination Units Fire Water Hospitals Cooling Water Hotels Off Shore Oil Platforms General Sanitation

10 DISINFECTION

11 DISINFECTION What is an effective disinfectant? It should be reliable and effective in killing pathogens that are normally encountered in contaminated water. It should leave a certain minimum amount of residual concentration of the disinfectant in water to ensure continued disinfection during water storage. It should not introduce substances in water that would make water harmful or make water unpleasant to look at. It should have adequate shelf life without significant loss of potency. It should be affordable. While it is very difficult to find one disinfectant which meets all these requirements, sodium hypochlorite of low concentration is the most suitable, as it meets the maximum number of the requirements listed above. SAFE WATER FOR RURAL AND URBAN POOR - For NGOs World over, nearly 3 million people die each year due to waterborne diseases out of which 1.9 million are children. Waterborne diseases can be controlled only by pointof-use disinfection. Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl) is the most effective and stable disinfectant used all over the world to purify drinking water. The implementation of "Safe Water System"(SWS) developed by the Centre for Disease Control, USA and UNDP is being adopted by many NGOs and Govt. organizations, in most developing countries. The strategy is to make water safe through disinfection and safe storage at the point of use. This is a water quality intervention that employs simple, inexpensive and robust technologies appropriate for the developing world and has been implemented in 19 countries across five continents so far. The success of this program is based on a reliable and economical access to NaOCl. You can now produce your own NaOCl with Common salt, water and electricity using the Pristine Water range of Electrochlorinators using the latest cell technology manufactured to international standards. Our systems give you the freedom from buying and storing commercially available Sodium Hypochlorite solution which is far more expensive in the long run than generating your own NaOCl.

12 DRINKING WATER The main purpose of disinfecting drinking water is to kill bacteria and virus which cause dreaded diseases. The major disinfection methods are: Boiling This is not always suitable as this method is expensive, fuel intensive and does not offer protection against recontamination. Ultra-Violet/ Reverse Osmosis /Ozone - These are also not always suitable as they are expensive and therefore not viable for the urban and rural poor. These processes do not leave any residual in water to prevent recontamination, hence not suitable for distribution networks. Chlorine gas Though it is suitable for disinfection, due to its dangerous and polluting nature, it does not find easy application in most places. In a drinking water distribution network, water needs to be rechlorinated from time to time to prevent recontamination. This rechlorination can be achieved through our Electrochlorinators. Our solution of Electrochlorination is an inexpensive, simple, effective and self sustainable method of providing safe drinking water to the people of villages and urban slums. The strategy is to make water safe through disinfection and safe storage at the point of use. FOOD AND BEVERAGE The food and beverage industry depends largely on chlorine for their disinfection needs. Chlorine is used in meat and poultry processing units for disinfection. Also, during the manufacturing of soft drinks, jams & fruit juices bio-contaminants from the raw materials like fruits & vegetables are removed using sodium hypochlorite. Further, the purification and disinfection of the containers in which these products are packaged is made possible by using chlorine. Poultry units use electrochlorinators for disinfection of the premises and for purifying their water supply. Fisheries also use electrochlorinators for disinfection. Dairies use sodium hypochlorite for sterilizing their equipments and general sanitation. On-site sodium hypochlorination is the most suitable method for this kind of disinfection as it is low cost, prevents recontamination and is energy efficient as compared to other methods.

13 EFFLUENT, WASTE WATER, AND MARINE SEWAGE TREATMENT The purpose of disinfecting wastewater is to substantially reduce the number of microorganisms in the water to be discharged back into the environment. In cloudy water especially, the solid matter shields organisms from UV Light. Therefore, UV based solutions are not effective in such situations because of short contact times, low doses and high flow rates. Also UV is a very expensive solution for waste water treatment. The most commonly used method of disinfection of waste water is electrochlorination due to its low cost and long-term history of effectiveness. MARINE SEWAGE Our systems treat the waste water like effluent, sewage & marine waste through electrochemically generated NaOCl. Marine sewage treatment units provide effective electrolytic treatment of both black and grey water. CYANIDE DISPOSAL In electroplating industries, the cyanide effluent is neutralized using sodium hypochlorite generated by our onsite electrochlorinators before disposal. ODOUR CONTROL Controlling hydrogen sulfide and other odor causing emissions is a major issue for most wastewater treatment plants. H2S odors can by reduced to very low levels by wet scrubbers using sodium hypochlorite generated by our systems. COLOUR CONTROL Effluents from leather tanneries & textile processing industries have highly pigmented effluents which can be controlled by the use of sodium hypochlorite generated by our systems.

14 RECREATIONAL WATER Recreational Water Illnesses(RWI),originate from swimming pools, hot tubs, water parks and other man-made water features. They are also spread through freshwater ponds and lakes, and even in some saltwater environments. Bacteria that cause an RWI include cryptosporidium, giardia, shigella, E. coli and norovirus. All these organisms thrive in non-chlorinated water. Exposure to an RWI can cause mild to severe diarrhea, gastrointestinal distress and eye, ear and skin infections. Chlorine is added to water in swimming pools and other water bodies to control algae growth, get rid of insect larvae and kill harmful bacteria, viruses and pathogens. Chlorination keeps swimming pools, water parks, fountains and other water recreational areas clean by disinfection. It also helps prevent the occurrence and spread of RWIs. SWIMMING POOLS, WATER PARKS, WATER PLAY AREAS The most common RWI is diarrhea. Swallowing water that has been contaminated with feces containing germs can cause diarrheal illness. It may seem like there is no stagnant water in swimming pools or water play area, but the spray water rinses all contaminants from the surrounding area into the water holding area. The infected water is recycled through the system. Electrochlorination will kill these bacteria and viruses and leave your pools, fountains or water parks safe and clean. DECORATIVE WATER FOUNTAINS Not all decorative fountains are chlorinated or filtered. Therefore, algae growth is very common in most of the fountains which makes the water look dirty, smell bad and also tends to chock the nozzles of the fountain. Electrochlorination is the best solution to keep your fountain fresh and clean.

15 HOSPITALS Sodium hypochlorite is used as a broad spectrum disinfectant in hospitals and hotels. Chlorine based disinfection is recommended by the UK Health Authority as the preferred disinfectant to kill harmful and difficult to treat bacteria like Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium difficile (C.Difficle). The required concentration will depend on the amount of organic material present on the surface to be cleaned and disinfected. Different concentrations of chlorine needs to be used to disinfect counter tops, floors, tonometer heads, needles, syringes, laundry, dental appliances, hydrotherapy tanks, water distribution instruments in hemo-dialysis instruments, and regulated medical waste prior to disposal. It is recommended that the sodium hypochlorite solution be made fresh every day. Pristine Water's electrochlorinators are the perfect solution for this. HOTELS In hotels, sodium hypochlorite has wide application as an inexpensive and effective disinfectant against all types of bacteria, fungi and viruses. In hotel kitchen, it is used for the disinfection of fruits, vegetables, eggs etc before cooking. In the housekeeping department, it is used for cleaning laundry, floors, disinfection of the swimming pool etc. GENERAL SANITATION In sugar mills, sodium hypochlorite is used for general sanitation and prevention of bacteria that causes the formation of Dextron which eventually leads to the white sugar yield. It is also used as a sanitizer in public places.

16 BIO FOULING CONTROL & ALGAE PREVENTION

17 BIO FOULING CONTROL & ALGAE PREVENTION Seawater pipeline is subject to micro fouling in the form of slime formation leading to accelerated corrosion and reduced head exchange efficiency. Macro fouling is caused by the growth of Barnacles and mussels inside the pipeline reducing the flow rate and sometimes choking the pipeline. Shock and Continuous dosing of Sodium Hypochlorite will prevent the buildup of micro and macro fouling. To prevent marine growth on board ships in Heat exchangers, Condensers, Ballast chamber injection of Sodium Hypochlorite has to be undertaken. This would not only increase the efficiency of the equipment but also reduce the frequency of the maintenance required. Our onsite sodium hypochlorite generators find their applications in Oil and Gas Offshore Platforms, Refineries and Petrochemical Plants, Ballast water treatment, Ships, Naval Vessels, Tankers, Bulk Carriers etc. BALLAST WATER The simple, cost effective, safe method to avoid the bio-imbalance due to discharge of ballast water is Electrochlorination which will remove all the water borne species and pathogens including those present in the Ballast water tanks. Sodium Hypochlorite can be produced on board directly from sea water in our on-line Sodium Hypochlorite generators and added to the Ballast water.

18 SEA WATER INTAKE & PRE TREATMENT PLANT FOR THERMAL POWER PLANTS AND DESALINATION UNITS Seawater pipeline is subject to micro fouling in the form of slime formation leading to accelerated corrosion and reduced head exchange efficiency. Our onsite sodium hypochlorite generators find their applications in Oil and Gas Offshore Platforms, Refineries and Petrochemical Plants, Ballast water treatment, Ships, Naval Vessels, Tankers, Bulk Carriers etc FIRE WATER Offshore and on shore facilities using seawater in their Firewater System face the problem of marine growth like algae, mussels etc. This growth if unchecked will lead to chocking of the pipeline and starve the jockey pumps. Dosing of Sodium Hypochlorite produced by our on-line generator will keep the caisson clean and free of marine growth.

19 COOLING WATER In Thermal Power Plants, Refineries and Steel Plants, our electro chlorinators are extensively used in the Cooling Towers to prevent algae growth in the cooling water. The warm temperature due to the water that enters the cooling tower coupled with humidity is a recipe for pathogens, algae and mussel growth outside the condensate pipes, which results in the reduction of heat exchange efficiency. Our electro chlorinators produce the required sodium hypochlorite to prevent this algae formation and thereby optimizing the efficiency of the cooling water system. OFF SHORE OIL PLATFORMS Marine growth and fouling in Floating production Storage and Offloading vessels (FPSO) reduces heat transfer in condenser and heat exchanger and restricting cooling water flow in pipes. This reduces the overall efficiency and safety of the plant. In severe cases the plant may need to be shut down. Fouling also increases corrosion by restricting oxygen diffusion and causing destructive turbulences at inlets, which shortens the operational life of the equipment. Dosing sodium hypochlorite using our onsite Electro chlorinators will ensure this marine growth is prevented thereby increasing the efficiency and reducing the frequency of maintenance required in the off shore oil and gas platform.
