1 Report of National Coordination Discussion on JSPS research coordination within member country of Indonesia was attended by Ms. Hikmah Thoha (LIPI), Asep Sachoemar (BPPT), Mr. Susetiono (LIPI), Mr. Wawan Kiswara (LIPI). Discussion focused on three issues, i.e., mechanisms of JSPS-Indonesia funding, location of study sites, and proposed members of young scientists. 1. Match Funding Mechanisms As the limited funding available in JSPS, two mechanisms of JSPS research activities as follows, 1/ the JSPS asked to each members Asian-CORE to provide match funding for air fare when the researcher from each country comes to Japan, and the JSPS will provide local cost (hotels and local transport), vise versa for Japanese scientist who will visit to Indonesia (member country), 2/ each members country is responsible for both air fare and local costs during stay in Japan vise versa for Japanese scientist who will come to Indonesia. Mechanism of match funding for JSPS has been the focused on the discussion and there was no agreement among members, as there are no such mechanism within the country. During December 2010 meeting, it has been stated that Indonesia in the position of scheme one (1). Applying the scheme one, it will cause majority researchers unable to come to Japan to increase their skill of research. The decision of this issues on 6 December 2011 is that, we decided to have a conditional status. Conditional status means it depends on the availability of the funding. Moreover, National Coordinator plans to discuss further within the country and provide a definite answer on the JSPS-LIPI cooperation in the coming months. 2. Integrated Ecosystem Study and Location The Integrated study will focus on seagrass ecosystems in western, central and eastern Indonesian coastal waters, based on the characteristics of seagrass ecosystems. Location for integrated study is suggested in Jakarta Bay, Ternate Island, Kei Kecil Island and Selayar Island. The group agreed to have a Jakarta Bay location as integrated ecosystem research. We choose this location with consideration as follows, 1/ There are complete ecosystems, seagrass bed, coral reef and mangrove. 2/ The area is very complex with high pollution load from land-based activities 3/ Hydrodynamic oceanography mechanism in relation to the mass fish mortality and seasonal change is still lack information. 4/. Red tide phenomena often occurred but the possible cause of eutrophication is still debatable. 5/ The area is actively used for aquaculture activity and recreation destination. Possible study, 1/develop ecosystem model, 2/develop two and three dimensional hydrodynamic model, 3/ develop time series data base using field observation and remote sensing data.

2 2. New JSPS members Each member has proposed more than two teams for each area of study, this condition makes National Coordinator has difficulty to select. During discussion, members agreed to have one or two young researchers/staffs to join JSPS-Indonesia cooperation. Sc. Tech.; Min. Internal Affairs; Min. Foreign Affairs; LIPI; Min. Defenses; Min. Marine and Fisheries Affairs, Min. Environment) Present the research proposal to the panel
