That sack is full of natural resources! 4. All products have resource bases. 5. And natural resources also provide the energy to make products and get them to us. of those natural resources-like trees- are renewable. When some are used, more can be planted. 7. Some are nonrenewable -like oil and metals. When they re used, they cannot be replaced. 8. But renewable or nonrenewable, all natural resources are valuable. They should be conserved. Lesson 2 2

3 11. All this solid waste must be picked up and taken somewhere. And that's a big job. First, solid waste is collected. Then, it might be taken to a transfer station and loaded into large trucks. It is finally disposed of in a sanitary landfill. 12. At sanitary landfills, solid 13. Landfills are a safe, clean waste is covered with soil every way to dispose of our solid day. waste. 18 2 Printed on 100% Dost-consumer recvcled DaDer.. The TRASH MONSTER Environmental Education Program Your child has been learning about the Trash Monster, and we would like you to share in this learning experience. Most solid waste is collected and taken to sanitary landfills for disposal. But landfills are rapidly filling up. And it is difficult to find new sites because people don t want landfills near their homes. But it is not just land that we are using up. Our natural resources are being depleted. It takes trees to make paper, mineral ore to manufacture metal, and petroleum to produce plastics. Some natural resources, trees for instance, can be replaced, although not as fast as we use them. But many natural resources, such as mineral ore and fossil fuels, cannot be renewed, and they will not last forever. The Trash Monster People have created the Trash Monster by feeding it too much solid waste (trash and garbage). On the average, each person in this country throws away about 3% pounds of solid waste every day. That means that a family of 4 throws out about 100 pounds of trash and garbage every week. Multiply that by the number of families on your block, in your city, in your state, in this country, and you can see that we have a gigantic amount of solid waste that must be disposed of. Excessive amounts of solid waste hurt our environment in other ways, too. Trash often ends up on the ground instead of in trash cans. This litter not only looks bad, but it also can cause air and water pollution.

19 Controlling the Trash Monster If we are to control the Trash Monster, we ve got to provide less food for it. And we can with the 4-R Solid Waste Reducing Plan -Revise, Reuse, Recycle, Recover. What You Can Do Your child has learned a great deal about the Trash Monster and about how to control it. And these lessons can be reinforced at home. Here s how you can help. Look at and share schoolwork. During the two-week program, your child has seen a filmstrip, done practice exercises, and participated in many class activities. Some of these activities are included in the pupil booklet your child will be bringing home. Look at and discuss the booklet with your child, and encourage your child to share with you and the rest of the family what he or she has learned at school. If we revise our buying habits by cutting down on the number of over-packaged and disposable items we buy, we will create much less solid waste. And we can reuse many things instead of tossing them in the trash after just one use. The TRASH MONSTER Environmental Education Program We can also feed the Trash Monster less by recycling newspaper, cardboard, glass, and metal-common items in most everyone s trash. Recycling, which means processing used materials so that they can be made into new products, uses much less energy, slows down the depletion of natural resources, and creates less solid waste for landfills. Finally, we can use organic solid waste-food, paper, plants, plastics-to recover energy. These materials can actually be burned to generate electricity, or they can be processed into fuels. 3 Encourage good habits. Your child has learned the 4-R Solid Waste Reducing Plan -Revise, Reuse, Recycle, Recover-and has decided how he or she can help with solid waste problems. Discuss the Reducing Plan with your child, and then plan ways that your family could help with solid waste problems, using the checklist on the back

20 How 1,, have decided to help with solid waste problems Now check ways your family can practice The 4 8 Solid Waste Reducing Plan to help solve solid waste problems. Reuise buying habits. For example: Buy products with less packaging - (fruits and vegetables not prepackaged, one large cereal box Instead of seueral individual ones) Use returnable and refillable containers (returnable bottles, refillable razors, lighters) Carry small purchases home without a paper bag (Perhaps bring a bag with you that you can carry purchases home in.) Other: Reuse whatever you can. For example: - Use an old T-shirt as a dust cloth Use food scraps and yard clippings in a compost pile Give used items to charity instead of throwing them away Other: Recycle. The easiest items to separate and take to the recycling center are: Newspapers Corrugated cardboard Aluminum cans, dinner trays, lawn furniture Clean glass bottles and jars without caps and labels (Check the yellow pages or the Chamber of Commerce for recycling centers in your community.) Recover energy. Support the development of modern resource recovery plants in your community The Trash Monster Environmental Education Program war developed by SWRL Educational Research and Development, a public, nonprofit organization, under contract from the California State Solid Waste Management Board The program 1s provided to schools at no cost OSP 306M R
