2 Foreword The Center for Creativity and Sustainability Study and Consultancy (CCS) is a not-forprofit organization specialized in providing services of R&D, consultancy, capacity building and applications of creative and sustainable solutions and development models to promote Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) in Vietnam. CCS was established in 2013 to continue and sustain the successes and results of SPIN project, within the framework of the EU SWITCH-Asia program, in the field of sustainable product innnovation ( ). CCS s official office is located at 6 Lane 255 Cau Giay Street, Ha Noi, Vietnam. The Center s staff bring with them expertise and years of experience in different fields, from mechanics, energy, agriculture, economy to product design. Currently, CCS is supporting three social enterprises which also represent our three main fields of activities: i-nature (Zerowaste Agriculture); Green Street (Sustainable products); and Elegance (Renewable energy and Clean technologies). We would like to share with our honourable partners and donors the CCS Activities Summary Report for Quarter 3/2017, which includes the following contents: 1. CCS manufactures continuous gasifier 2. 3 1.CCS manufactures continuous gasifiers Continuous Biomass Gasifier manufactured at CCS research workshop Continuous biomass gasification device was developed by CCS s R&D team after successfully studying the principle of TLUD continuous gasification in May The device is designed for common power ranges such as100kwt, 200kWt or 500 kwt. These devices can be paired together to create a heat source with different requỉed power (up to 5MW t ). A continuous biomass gasifier have modularly designed components that are easy to manufacture and assemble on a large scale production. This biomass gasifcation device Continuous biomass gasification will be used to provide heat for device was developed by CCS s R&D the boiler to facilitate production team after successfully studying activities at the Cricket s Land the principle of TLUD continuous organic farm in Dan Phuong, Hanoi. gasification in May CCS Quarterly Activities Summary 3

4 2. CCS cooperates with CPC-L to organize Biomass Gasification - Sustainable and Economic Solution workshop in Vientiane, Laos On September 26 th, 2017, the Center for Creativity and Sustainability Study and Consultancy (CCS) cooperated with CPC-L (Laos) to organize the Biomass Gasification - Sustainable and Economic Solution workshop in Vientiane, Laos. The workshop was attended by Mr. Samly Boutsady, deputy general director of the Department of Industry in Vientiane, Lao PDR, and other organizations and businesses in Laos that were interested in biomass gasification technology. At the workshop, Director Nguyen Hong Long introduced biogas gasification technology being researched in Vietnam as well as the potential of gasification technology in Laos in the near future. In Laos, 90% of the population in rural and mountainous areas are using firewood to burn directly as a cooking method. This situation leads to higher mortality rates of women in Laos compared to men. Therefore, during the seminar, CCS also introduced the gasifer model that has been researched and developed by CCS and applied in the LMI project implemented in Vietnam. CCS has been carrying out LMI project in Thai Nguyen Province to replace stoves with gasifiers using local materials such as rice husks and corn cobs to help people less depend on the firewood source. This also contribute to forest protection in the local area. Biomass gasification workshop in Vientiane, Laos Introducing the gasifier model for household cooking CCS Quarterly Activities Summary 4

7 5. A unique way to raise edible snails in Cricket s Land Edible snails are very self-sufficient as they can live without eating for up to 4-5 months. Due to this fact, i-nature carried out an research to improve the quality of edible snails at the Cricket s Land farm by embedding the them into the thin soil layer (a.k.a burying snails). This is how it is carried out: select the snail that are ready to be harvested, dry them in the wind to remove the weak ones.next, dig holes of about 80 cm deep. Dry and grind the farm soil into small pieces. Put the snails into the hole; cover a layer of soil and then water it lightly to make it wet enough. Continue to put another layer of snail and another layer of soil (4 layers in total). By the harvesting time, snails become larger in size and fatter, ready to be processed and become special food. This unique method is expected to provide customers with snail products of higher quality from the Cricket s Land farm in the upcoming time. i-nature carried out an research to improve the quality of snails at the Cricket s Land farm by embedding the snails into the thin layer of soil (also called burying snails). Currently, i-nature has planned on renovating the land and new production plans to be implemented immediately after the withdrawal of flood from Cricket Land - the key farm of i-nature, to timely plant vegetables for winter crop and livestock breeding. It is expected that Cricket Land will provide products such as meat, vegetables and services for Hanoi customers in the coming Lunar New Year holidays. Sales documents are being finalized. Material preparation progress and organic certification information are also being accelerated to be ready for bringing high quality products to the market. These tasks are implemented under the supervision of experts from CCS and the ACT-EU-Canada- USDA consultancy and organic certification issuing agencies. 11 CCS submitted a project proposal to the Australian Government s (DAP) Direct Aid Program for Northern Vietnam The Australian Government s Direct Aid Program (DAP) for Northern Vietnam is funded by Australia Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and managed by Australia embassy in Hanoi. DAP in Northern Vietnam is highly competitive and only finances projects in northern provinces, from Ha Giang to Hue. This program supports projects aiming at poverty alleviation, improving public health, supporting education, building schools and small-scale infrastructure, rural development, youth development, gender equality, and contributing to climate change mitigation and adaptation. The amount of funding for each project amounts to 60,000 AUD (approximately 1.05 billion VND). CCS has developed and submitted a proposal for a project revolving around the transfer of gasifiers and gasification technology to ethnic minority farmers in Quy Ky and Tan Duong communes of Dinh Hoa district, Thai Nguyen province. If funded, this would be a potentially successful project that could be replicated in other provinces of the country. DAP projects focus on achieving measurable and practical outcomes such as poverty reduction, public health, school / education, small scale infrastructure, rural development, youth development, gender equality and response to climate change.
