TRANSFORMING WASTE INTO WEALTH

Presentation outline Introduction The problem The solution Activities conducted in partnership with SAG Challenges Lessons learnt

Introduction Masupa Enterprises offers cheap yet affordable and environmentally friendly energy solutions to both urban and rural communities through production and sale of charcoal briquettes as well as distribution of efficient energy saving cook stoves.

Problem High demand and price for wood charcoal leading to deforestation and loss of biodiversity Cooking using inefficient energy solutions. Increasing amount of poorly disposed waste

Solution Production of stick and honey comb briquettes at affordable prices. Distribution of efficient energy saving stoves of all sizes. Sorting and recycling of garbage to produce briquettes. Training the community about environmental management through Waste Recycling

Generated banana waste biomass 08/06/

Transforming waste into wealth Waste Recycled waste (Char)

Distribution of efficient cook stoves Inefficient cook stove Efficient Energy saving stove MASUPA Stove

Training in conservation Creating awareness Sorting Char

Market Potential Ugandan Market with a population of 34 million people growing at 3% per annum. Average of 6.7 members per household; 5,074,626 households Target Urban population living in and around all urban cities and towns in Uganda Institutions like schools, Hospitals, restaurants, and hotels Poultry farmers

Distribution Exhibition in trade fares Display in shops and Markets Personal selling to individuals Door to door approach Use of the media through talk shows, social media and adverts. Road side banners and billboards Distribution van and sales Agents

Competition S. No Parameter MASUPA COMPETITION 01 Quality of Charcoal briquettes Strong Average 02 Cook stoves for briquettes Best Good 03 Production capacity Low Average 04 Training services Very Good Fair 05 Market share Low Average 06 Use of agricultural waste material Very good Fair 07 Access to finances Poor Good

Activities conducted in partnership with SAG 1. Technical training attended Charcoal briquette production Biomass crusher Fabrication Biomass carboniser equipment fabrication Cleaner production practices 2. Business development training Business canvas model Record keeping Financials 3. Awareness creation Clean energy campaigns in Central Region Fumbalive national campaigns

Output of SAG Support Increased production: up by 1 tone so far Improved quality of charcoal briquettes Fabricated a motorized crusher for ease of production. Fabricated a Biomass carboniser equipment Identified by the government to create awareness of charcoal briquettes through The National Fumbalive campaign aiming to promote energy saving solutions throughout the country

Challenges Limited drying racks due to increased production Limited production space due to up-scaled production Weak packaging Limited access to new markets Low working capital and transport facilities Negative attitude toward charcoal briquettes Briquettes standardization

Further support expected through SAG Project Motorized honey comb machine Kiln Motorized Mixer Solar Dryer 2 stove Grooving machines 2 stove spraying machines 5 steps in 1 automated machine

Lessons Learnt Training in Machinery fabrication is key to up scaling production of charcoal briquettes and reduces capital investment Business incubation is key in accessing new technologies in clean energy Tailor-made Business mentorship is important for the development of successful business in clean energy Improved marketing strategy will open up new markets

THE END Thank you We encourage you to join the struggle for conserving our environment.
