2 2 WHAT ARE CREDENTIALS? Credentials represent environmental compliance ratings from a recognised industry body or environmental organisation or products which have specific or unique attributes. Many BJ Ball products have a combination of these. In our collateral and support material including the BJ Ball website and swatch books, we use graphic symbols to represent these credentials relative to the appropriate products. This glossary shows all the credentials symbols and explains what each represents. Please note, many of these credentials symbols are copyright protected by their respective organisations, so ensure you match credentials symbols to the appropriate products. Do not skew, distort or crop the credentials symbols. To identify what credentials relate to which products, please consult the product information on our website or in a swatchbook or for credentials and products specifically relating to environmental compliance please contact us for a complimentary copy of our THINK GREEN GUIDE. Some credentials symbols are available for download and use on your printed material as a way of showing that you have specifically chosen a substrate product that has an environmental compliance rating or unique attribute. In this document we have tagged which credentials symbols can be downloaded for use. 4 4 DEFINITIONS ANTI-BLEED TECHNOLOGY Anti-Bleed Technology refers to Selfadhesive products which have been manufactured to prevent edge-bleeding during printing or guillotine trimming. CARBON NEUTRAL To be classified Carbon Neutral, an entity must have its carbon emissions from production, manufacture, transport and disposal, calculated, reduced where possible, and offset through the purchase of real, verified, and additional carbon offset credits. ENVELOPES This paper range includes a matching envelope option. These are supplied ready for use or over-printing. ARCHIVAL 100 YEARS + Archival paper must meet the international standard for permanence (ISO9706), which requires papers to have a ph of 7.5 to 8.5, contain at least 2% calcium carbonate, and contain no ground wood or unbleached fibre. Paper meeting this standard can be expected to last more than 100 years. AVAILABLE IN REELS Paper range available in reels. CHEMICAL RESISTANT Chemical resistant products retain strength and integrity when exposed to some chemicals. Where it is expected that a product may come in contact with chemicals, we would advise testing the stock prior to printing. EU ECO-LABEL Launched 10 years ago to avoid a proliferation of separate national schemes, EU eco-label helps you identify products and services that have a reduced impact on the environment throughout their life cycle, from the extraction of raw material through to production, use and disposal. Recognised throughout Europe, it is a voluntary label promoting environmental excellence. DRY TONER PROCESSES This product has been developed to be compatible with digital printers that use dry toner. As variances can occur we do recommend that any paper stock product be tested through the intended digital print equipment prior to ordering a volume of finished product. FARMED TREES Double A Papers in Thailand has developed a worldwide unique model for the production of its paper. Over 2 million contracted Thai farmers grow a specifically chosen species of Eucalyptus trees alongside their rice, cassava, sugar and corn plots. These trees are then harvested for the production of Advance Laser. The Farmed Trees concept was created to assist rural communities to prosper and grow on their own. At the same time, the farmed trees are a natural and sustainable source of fibre. BLUE ANGEL The Blue Angel eco-label is the first and oldest environmental related label for products and services in the world. It has strong international recognition and high credibility for certifying environmentally sound products and services. CAN BE STORED AT LOW TEMPERATURES Products tagged with this credential are designed so they can tolerate low temperatures without compromising the strength of the substrate. Acclimatising stock prior to printing is advisable. ELEMENTAL CHLORINE FREE Pulp whitened without the use of chlorine gas. Known as ECF EMAS The Eco-Management and Audit Scheme is a globally recognised voluntary environmental management tool that enables organisations to assess, manage and continuously improve their environmental performance. FDA APPROVED This paper stock has been approved through the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and should be considered safe for use with food products. We do however recommend testing using samples or mock-ups to ensure the stock performs and meets your expectations. GREEN SEAL Green Seal is an American based independent non-profit organisation dedicated to safeguarding the environment and transforming the marketplace by promoting the manufacture, purchase, and use of environmentally responsible products and services. MILL SPECIFIC EMS Mill Specific Environmental Management System (EMS) refers to the management of a mills individual environmental program in a comprehensive, planned and documented manner. It includes resources for developing, implementing and maintaining policy for environmental protection. A Mill Specific EMS defines the management and continuous improvement of environmental aspects concerning the mills exclusive organisation and includes water, energy, effluent, emissions and waste in accordance with the mills requirements and Environmental Management Policy. FOOD SAFE Products marked as food safe are suitable for use with some food types. Please contact your BJ Ball representative for clarification of which substrate products are suitable with what food products. FROM RESPONSIBLE SOURCES Forests that are certified and audited to ensure they comply with environmentally sustainable practice and principles. Responsible sources management uses broad social, economic and environmental goals to meet its criteria. FSC MIX & FSC RECYCLED Forest Stewardship Council FSC is an independent, non-governmental, organisation established to promote the responsible management of the world s forests. Established in 1993 as a response to concerns over global deforestation, FSC Chain of Custody certification provides a credible link between responsible production and consumption of forest products, enabling consumers and businesses to make purchasing decisions that benefit people and the environment as well as providing ongoing business value. The different categories include FSC Recycled, FSC Mix and FSC Pure. VISIT greenseal.org to register for logo use. HP INDIGO APPROVED The technology is based on HP ElectroInk, which uses small colour particles suspended in Imaging Oil that can be attracted or repelled by means of a voltage differential. The ink forms a very thin and smooth layer on the paper surface resulting in a highly uniform finish complementing that of the paper. ISO The International Organisation for Standards (ISO) promotes the development and implementation of voluntary international standards. ISO has established performance objectives and environmental management systems to prevent pollution, ensure compliance with regulations and achieve continual improvement. NORDIC ECO-LABEL The Nordic Eco-label or Nordic swan is the official sustainability eco-label for the Nordic countries, introduced by the Nordic Council of Ministers. Criteria for gaining the eco-label include environmental, quality and health arguments and promotes products and services belonging to the most environmentally sound. NZ MADE This product has been manufactured in New Zealand, meaning you are supporting the local economy. When you buy a New Zealand made product, you re helping to create jobs and promote growth. OFFSET PRINTING This credential tags a Self-adhesive or Synthetic product as suitable for offset printing. Got questions on Credentials? Call BJ Ball on

6 6 DEFINITIONS PEFC CERTIFIED Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes is, by area, the world s largest forest certification system. Fulfilling the PEFC standard requires independent third-party verification. PEFC Chain of Custody certification provides a credible link between responsible production and consumption of forest products, enabling consumers and businesses to make purchasing decisions that benefit people and the environment as well as providing ongoing business value. PROCESS CHLORINE FREE Process Chlorine Free - paper made from recycled fibre that has not been rewhitened with any chlorine based bleach. TEAR RESISTANT Products tagged as tear resistant are manufactured from materials with high intrinsic strength. Tear resistant products are designed to withstand a large amount of handling. PH NEUTRAL ACID FREE Acid-free or ph Neutral paper is paper that if infused in water yields a neutral or basic ph (7 or slightly greater). It can be made from any cellulose fiber as long as the active acid pulp is eliminated during processing. It is also lignin and sulfur-free. Acid-free/pH Neutral paper addresses the problem of preserving documents and artwork for long periods and can be expected to last more than 50 years. RECYCLED PAPER Paper recycling is the process of turning waste paper into new paper products. There are three categories of paper that can be used as feed-stocks for making recycled paper: mill broke, pre-consumer waste, and post-consumer waste. Mill broke is paper trimmings and other paper scrap from the manufacture of paper, and is recycled internally in a paper mill. Pre-consumer waste is material which left the paper mill but was discarded before it was ready for consumer use like trimmings from a printer. Post-consumer waste is material discarded after consumer use, such as old corrugated containers, old magazines, old newspapers, office paper, old telephone directories, and residential mixed paper. WIND GENERATED POWER Non-polluting, wind-generated electricity helps remove more then 9.2 million pounds of carbon dioxide from the air -the equivalent of taking 750 cars off the road or planting 45,000 trees each year. Wind Farms are a group of wind turbines in the same location used to produce electric power. Wind Turbines are devices that convert kinetic energy from the wind, also called wind energy, into mechanical energy; a process known as wind power.
