Best Practices The following best practices have been established to ensure the safety of those working at the greenhouse and to provide guidance for successful educational and research projects at the facility.

Attire and Personal Safety Shoes are required to be worn in all areas and at all times. First aid kits are located in 700B and in 735. Latex gloves and dust masks are available by the first aid kit in 700B. Please dispose of sharp items in the red sharps containers in 700B.

Building Security Outside of business hours: Be sure all doors are securely locked when entering and exiting. Do not prop open doors or permit unknown individuals into the facility. Do not leave any valuables unattended. Immediately report suspicious activity.

Sanitation Please dispose of waste properly: Compost = cans without liners Trash = cans with liners GMO waste = Marked cans only Trash and Recycling bins are located throughout the headhouse. Please place food waste in central bins in hallway by restrooms as these are emptied daily.

Sanitation Please tidy up after yourself! Brooms, dustpans, and cleaning supplies are located in 700B Don t leave food and beverage wrappers/containers in the greenhouses as they attract pests.

Potting Tips Start Clean! Ø Use new or clean pots and sterile potting mix. Ø Clean scoops and tools before and after use. Ø Do not use dust pans as soil scoops. Ø Size the pot appropriate for the plant size. Ø Leave space from top of mix to rim of pot for water. Ø Always label each pot/flat with your name. Unlabeled plants will be discarded.

Watering Tips Avoid watering late in the day. Avoid stress from over and under-watering as this invites pest and disease issues. Don t leave plants in standing water. Keep hose breakers off the floor.

Spacing Tips Space plants apart for good air circulation and to minimize disease and pest issues. Rolling benches can tip if loaded unevenly. Be sure to distribute weight across benches evenly when loading and unloading.

Pest Control Tips Keep plants, benches and areas free of dead and decaying plant debris. Promptly remove and dispose of unnecessary plants. Rogue out pest and disease ridden plants. Do not keep pet plants that can host pests. Report pest issues immediately to greenhouse staff.

Best Practices Don t leave tools, razor blades or other items in greenhouse where they can get wet and rusty and pose a hazard. All items stored in the greenhouse should be waterproof or stored in waterproof containers. Use of glassware in the greenhouse is not recommended. Do not drink or wash with water from greenhouse hoses as fertilizer is run through the system.

Best Practices Tools, carts and other items are shared. Please return them to the prep room promptly after use. If you need to use for an extended period, make a request to greenhouse staff. Please notify staff of any equipment failures or malfunctions immediately. Do not move light fixtures, open or close valves, or turn on/off fans without notifying greenhouse staff.. Any items stored in the cold room must have prior approval of greenhouse staff. Items must be labeled with contact name and phone number in addition to contents. No food storage is permitted in the cold room.
