3 Original AIRE Goal Exceeded Arlington surpassed the original 2012 AIRE (Arlington Initiative to Rethink Energy) goal, achieving an 11.3 percent reduction in GHG emissions from County government operations in 2012 compared to the 2000 baseline, as confirmed by a third-party review. 3

4 Adoption of the Community Energy Plan The Arlington County Board voted unanimously to adopt the Community Energy Plan (CEP) as a new element of the County s Comprehensive Plan in June, The plan set ambitious community energy goals to achieve 75 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by

5 . Energy Journey Games The Energy Journey games, held in February and October 2013, attracted over 500 residents who learned how their personal energy decisions can save money and support Arlington s sustainability goals. 5

6 VML Green Government Award Arlington was certified under the Virginia Municipal League (VML) Green Government challenge for The platinum-level certification, recognizing specific environmental policies and actions that reduce carbon emissions and other environmental impacts, awarded Arlington 195 points out of a possible

7 Energy Performance Labels Arlington updated energy performance labels for County facilities with 2012 utility data. 7

8 Green Home Choice Program Arlington s Green Home Choice program awarded 32 project teams who constructed homes that were energy and natural resource-efficient, and provided a healthy living environment. 8

9 Lighting Rebate Program AIRE offers rebates to commercial property owners for upgrading lighting fixtures to help save energy and money. In 2013, 11 lighting retrofit projects were completed, each reducing wattage by 50 percent or greater. One project a conversion of 40-watt Exit signs to 1.8-watt LED retrofits resulted in the highest reduction in wattage at 95 percent. There are 8 more projects in the pipeline. 9

10 Green Building Density Incentive Arlington s Green Building Density Incentive policy was revised to include elevated requirements for participation: at least LEED Silver certification, at least 18 percent energy savings, and a commitment to report energy data to the County for 10 years. Eight projects, totaling 1,730 residential units and 888,389 square feet of office space, have committed to the new policy. In addition, five projects earned LEED certification in 2013 including the office building at 1776 Wilson, residential projects at 2201 N Pershing,1300 Crystal Drive, and 3565 Lee Hwy and the hotel at 650 Quincy Street. 10

11 Green Building Education Interactive green building tours and signs, using the building as an example, were developed for Arlington Mill Community Center, Walter Reed Community Center, The Westover Library and Reed School, and Yorktown High School. 11
