2 Story of AMPERE S.p.a. AMPERE S.p.A. is a stock company founded in 1940 by the late G. Picker, a graduated in Electrical Engineering at Karlsruhe University in Germany. The company s main activities are sales in Italy of instruments and systems for Measurement, Test, Monitoring, and Diagnostics both as distributor and as agent on behalf of leading manufacturers worldwide and even as a system integrator providing services for the different promoted devices. With a new and fast-growing business unit (named Servizio Misure ) AMPERE is also offering consultancies and specialized diagnostic services to Power Plants and T&D Utilities, on transformers, generators, motors, cable and overhead lines. Both in Italy and abroad. AMPERE has adequate engineering capacity and experience for providing automatic energy management systems. AMPERE has also an Energy System Division which coordinates projects as a Global EPC Contractor for power plants (renewable and traditional energy) and substations. AMPERE S.p.A. is an ISO 9001:2008 and OHSAS 18001:2007 company, certified by Dekra.

3 Business of Ampere S.p.A. The Area Elettrica business unit of AMPERE offers a wide range of instrumentation and systems for electrical measurements and test, including -- HV testing rooms and on-line monitoring solutions. This business unit includes the Turn Key Projects division, responsible for construction of HV Substations, Wind Farms, Photovoltaic Power Plant, Hydro Power plant and in general Power plants pertaining to Renewable Energy. Within the same BU Ampere is also developing the System Integration activities for Protection Relay and Plant Automation, providing well tailored SCADA solutions for monitoring and control. We are approaching both domestic and export market. The Area Processo business unit of AMPERE provides measurement s solutions for process industry and has specialized skills and experience to sell, install and manage leak detection and monitoring systems for oil and water pipelines. We are promoting Sub Systems to perform process functions for the Food and Pharma industries,, Chemical Process, Up-Stream, Midstream and Downstream, Steel Plant with E.A.F. Arc Furnace and L.F. Furnace, and more applications. The After Sales Service of Ampere is based on a well fitted in-house electronic laboratory for the repair, overhaul and calibration of instruments; as well as for the assembly of customized systems. In-field installation, commissioning and repair services are also offered by Ampere to its customers all over the Country and also outside of Italy. Ampere Turn-Key Projects division is responsible for the Feasibility Study, Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning of the plants. This activity can be developed by internal resources or through sub suppliers integrators able to grant the highest quality level and high professional skills on each and every field of the required Engineering. 6 ORC Cycle for high efficency energy production The Rankine Cycle is a thermodynamic cycle which converts heat into work. The heat is supplied externally to a closed loop, which usually uses water as working fluid. The Rankine Cycle based on water provides approximately 85% of worldwide electricity production. The Organic Rankine Cycle's principle is based on a turbo-generator working as a normal steam turbine to transform thermal energy into mechanical energy and finally into electric energy through an electric generator. Instead of the water steam, the ORC system vaporizes an organic fluid, characterized by a molecular mass higher than water, which leads to a slower rotation of the turbine and lower pressure and erosion of the metallic parts and blades. Efficiency: The ORC cycle has a high overall energy efficiency: 98% of incoming thermal power in the thermal oil is transformed into electric energy (around 20%) and heat (78%), with extremely limited thermal leaks, only 2 % due to thermal isolation, radiance and losses in the generator; the electric efficiency obtained in non co-generative cases is much higher (around 24% and more).

9 Case fo application of ORC units with WOODY BIOMASS APPLICATION OF ORC UNITS IN THE PELLET PRODUCTION FIELD The biomass fired combustion system of a typical pellet production plant is usually fed with raw material such as bark and low quality wood chips coming from sawmill and wood processing industry close to the pellet plant. Wood pellets are manufactured from untreated wood wastes, mostly sawdust and shavings, without any addition of chemical gluing agent. APPLICATION OF ORC UNITS IN SAWMILLS additional income can be obtained from electricity generated by the ORC unit without significant changes to the typical sawmill Part of the electricity generated is used for the own consumption of the plant and the remaining part is sold to the grid, according to the market conditions about electricity value and possible subsidies

11 Wood Shredder High throughput, low maintenance costs and high availability high performance shredders indispensable components of a modern biomass cogeneration plant. A special protection system for the cutting mechanism tools is available Any non-crushable foreign object finding its way into the cutting mechanism is segregated using the fully hydraulic lowerable cutter bars.

12 Wood chip storage The amount of storage required depends upon: Minimum fuel storage; how much storage the plant s financiers, regulators, clients and/or insurers require as a minimum to ensure continuous operation Known fuel delivery interruptions; the length of periods when fuel delivery can be anticipated to be interrupted, say for long weekends, or when supplier s mills are shutdown Reliability of fuel delivery; there must be enough fuel on hand to cover likely transportation delays Contingency supplies, to cover periods when forests are inaccessible for fire season, the wet season or during spring break-up. Fibre supply contractual requirements; the ability to continue to stockpile fuel when the power plant is shut down for annual maintenance.

13 Possible Wood chip dryer solutions The wet product is fed continuously into the low temperature belt dryer. Two conveyor screws distribute at first the wet product constantly across the belt width and level it. The suitable bed depth is variably adjustable and can thus be optimally adapted to the respective requirements fast and easily. After distribution, the product is conveyed into the drying zone by means of the belt feed. Within the dryer tunnel, the generated hot air flows through the product. The hot air is generated by means of a heat exchanger from the available heating medium. During the hot air flows through the product layer, the moisture is dried off convectively and passed on to the air flow, which cools down by the necessary withdrawal of heat. While air can be measured out exactly along the total length and thus adapted optimally to the respective drying section. Several radial fans (multivent system) provide an exact air measuring along the total length of the belt dryer. Much more air is required in the feeding zone (wet zone) than in the discharge zone. An adaption to these requirements utilizes the drying air very effectively and increases the efficiency. The drying zone is sealed off from the feed and discharge zone; consequently there are only very few leakages. Additionally, the whole drying and hot air zone is operated in slight low-pressure so that no emission of leakage air is possible. Other drying solutions can be possible

16 Heat Exchanger Clean hot gas generation is available for systems requiring direct heat. Maximum combustion control results in fewer issues from sparks and dirty flue gas that are common with other systems.

18 ORC fluid condenser The condenser pressure acts as the turbine backpressure and thus has a considerable influence on the efficiency of the entire plant. 19 Cooling system Cooling Tower A cooling tower is a specialized heat exchanger in which air and water are brought into direct contact with each other in order to reduce the water's temperature. As this occurs, a small volume of water is evaporated, reducing the temperature of the water being circulated through the tower. Dry Cooling Diminishing water resources and increased water pollution concerns have led to the explosive growth of Dry Cooling worldwide. The major benefits for Dry Cooling are the elimination of water usage from the condensing power cycle, flexibility in power plant site selection and decreased time required for plant permitting.

20 Emission control Extraction and filter systems Standard design with welded and profiled sheet steel construction and an efficiency ratio of 80% or above. The model series and drive system are determined by the operational conditions (e.g. amount of material, dust content, temperature range, volume flow, overall pressure increase).
