Giving resources new life

The world is changing. Once there was waste. Now there are potentially valuable resources society must challenge itself to reuse, recycle and recover. Viridor, with its innovative services, is an integral part of this transformation. The world, the industry and our clients now see Viridor in a different light. And we re up for the challenge. Society s resource challenge By transforming domestic and commercial waste and recyclables into high-quality raw materials or renewable energy, we re making a substantial contribution to improving both our customers and the UK s resource efficiency. 01

Viridor has invested in some of the UK s most advanced recycling and energy recovery facilities. This social infrastructure enables a pioneering resource management service which knows where every last bit of material ends up. It s smart technology, safely operated by smart people. And with Viridor, it s not talk, it s action. Most advanced To date we have invested more than 1 billion into our network of Energy Recovery Facilities (ERFs). These work alongside our advanced Materials Recycling Facilities (MRFs) and collection and contract services. Image: Trident Park ERF Cardiff 02 03

Transforming industrial, commercial and domestic waste into high-quality raw materials and vital energy means investment in infrastructure, equipment and people. Quality is at the heart of everything we do. That s what creates value for Viridor and for our clients. Quality assurance Each year Viridor transforms over two million tonnes of materials into high quality recyclates. Viridor Resource Management (VRM) has the expertise and long-term relationships to allow us to trade these materials ourselves to markets in the UK, Europe and around the world. 5 Our values Sales, service, safety, sustainability, social responsibility. All are stronger when we collaborate and work in partnership with customers, colleagues and communities. At all times, Viridor takes a positive attitude to working with others for everyone s benefit. Working together We use smart technology operated by smart people. From user-friendly household waste recycling centres for the general public, to some of the most advanced materials recycling facilities and energy recovery facilities in Europe. 7 Quality Recycled Materials We continue to increase our recycling capacity through investment in new facilities and acquisitions. We work with our local authority and commercial customers to find a recycling solution that suits them. This includes supporting collections that sort materials at source, providing commingled, dry mixed recycling services, and operating user-friendly household waste recycling sites. In some cases we also manage recycling operations on the customers own sites. Vital Renewable Energy After reducing, reusing and recycling as much as possible, recovering energy from our waste is the next big thing. We have invested over 1 billion in Energy Recovery Facilities, which use state-of-the-art technology to generate heat and power. We also operate anaerobic digestion plants to generate electricity, which break down organic waste to release heat and energy. Gas produced and harnessed to generate power from existing landfill sites also provides a major contribution. Energy recovery from waste (both biodegradable and non-biodegradable) accounts for c.8% of total UK renewable energy. Viridor believes that by 2020 UK energy recovery from waste could produce 13% of the total forecasted UK renewable energy. It will be a vital contribution given predicted capacity shortage in the energy sector. 9 Our people are our greatest resource We employ over three thousand highly trained people across the UK. We provide apprenticeships, graduate recruitment and management training schemes to nurture skills. Our investment in their future equips them to overcome tomorrow s challenges. Above all, we actively promote a culture of health and safety, working towards our objective of zero accidents. Working in partnership We engage with and support the communities and environment in which we serve, through an active programme of employee volunteering, sponsorship and community partnerships. We have planted trees, organised community walks, cleared woodlands, run, cycled and canoed to raise sponsorship. We also provide millions in funding for Viridor Credits, an independent environmental charity, which delivers funding for community, amenity and conservation projects in areas close to our operating landfills and ERF s. A positive difference You can t learn about waste management too soon. This is why we invite schools to visit our environmental education centres at our facilities across the UK, helping to promote better understanding and best practice in waste prevention, recycling, recovery, resource management and sustainability. It s our hope that they will encourage their friends and families to recycle more and waste less. Behind the scenes we continue to work with trade associations and all levels of government on the UK s resource, energy and waste management strategies Towards social, environmental and economic sustainability Land stewardship is important to us, and to local communities, plants and wildlife. Since 2008 Viridor has sought to restore and manage our closed landfill sites in accordance with the Wildlife Trusts Biodiversity Benchmark Scheme (BBS).To date eight sites have achieved/retained the certification. Our core services in recycling and renewable power generation can help deliver significant environmental and carbon reduction benefits. We ensure our growing fleet of trucks is economical, efficient and driven by people who understand the importance of cutting emissions and saving fuel Investing in the communities we serve 01 Viridor Street Trees Initiative 02 Environmental education centres 03 STEM and GO4SET: educational sponsorship 04 Employee volunteering in Manchester 05 Lakes at Beddington restored landfill site 14 15

This iconic project is designed to bring world-class recycling, waste management and renewable energy infrastructure to Greater Manchester. Viridor Laing s well-structured and transparent approach to this contract has enabled us to remain on track. Councillor Neil Swannick Past-chair of Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority With Viridor on board we are confident that we will continue to develop more waste minimising and recycling strategies, ensuring that we preserve our green and eco-friendly community here at MediaCityUK. Stephen Wild Managing Director of Real Estate, Media City UK Giving resources new life. The world can t afford to wait: it s time to throw away old thinking about waste and recognise its real value as a resource. Viridor made the most progress in building a successful partnership with Coca-Cola Enterprises. This has supported us in our aim to reduce, recycle and recover all waste from our manufacturing process. David Cowell Vice President, Procurement, Supply Chain Coca-Cola Enterprises CCE Supplier Summit Viridor put in a new recycling system for us which has saved us quite a lot of money over the last three years. It s also kept us compliant, which is critical in the print business. Gary Kiernan Lonsdale Print Solutions 16
