2 ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY STATEMENT Environmental stewardship is a vitally important aspect of sustainable business development and Tersus recognise the need for high standards of environmental and resource management by continuing to integrate those high standards into the relevant sectors of the company s operations. It is the company s ultimate goal to reduce waste within its office environment and conserve natural resources through sound environmental management practices. Many steps are needed, both small and large but it is the policy of Tersus Consultancy Limited to support responsible environmental and resource management in balance with sustainable business development and see this as part of the company s ongoing endeavours towards good corporate citizenship. Whilst our business activity does not actually produce large quantities of waste the company will do everything within its power to reduce that waste to the lowest level possible. 3 POLICY It is the policy of Tersus Consultancy Limited to comply with all applicable laws and regulations. Our goals include: The use of less paper within the office environment and in the service we provide to our clients by the promotion of paperless web based survey reports. Combining environmental aspects into our internal and external business activities. Integrating a philosophy of sustainable development into our business activities. Enhancing environmental awareness among our employees and motivating them to act in an environmentally responsible manner. To reduce waste within the office by recycling as much as possible, including paper & board products and printer ink and toner cartridges. To ensure all waste generated by our laboratory due to the analysis of asbestos samples is disposed of in accordance with the Special Waste Regulations by a registered carrier to a licensed landfill site. To use low energy lighting wherever possible. To reduce the use of electricity by switching off all unnecessary computers, lighting and heating and reduce the number of machines switched to stand by. To ensure that office furniture is manufactured from sustainable materials from managed sources. To reduce the impact on the environment from all our business activities. To use recycled materials wherever possible. 3 TER/EP/V1

4 IMPLIMENTATION It is the responsibility of our General Managers and Directors of each of the Tersus Consultancy Limited offices to implement and where possible enhance the company s Environmental Policy. This will be carried out by initiating and maintaining the following: Progress an energy management plan to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, and a resource management plan focusing on reduction, reuse and recycling where possible and safe disposal of all waste materials. Educate and communicate with our employees concerning our Environmental Policy and related issues. Integrate environmental considerations into our procurement and supplier management processes. Develop and implement processes to manage environmental risks associated with our business activities. Collect data on our significant environmental impacts and use this to set targets and monitor progress. Benchmark our strategy and performance through liaison with other companies and selective participation in public surveys, and monitor and act on external advice on environmental best practice. Use only suppliers who are like minded in relation to the company s goal to reduce its environmental impact. Continue to advance the policy by regular meetings and communication between all group offices in order to pass on best practice information. Periodically review, and as appropriate enhance, our Environmental Policy and supporting management system. 4 TER/EP/V1

5 Recycling & Waste Reduction Policy As a Company, we are in favour of reducing the amount of waste going to landfill in order to minimize the harmful effect on the environment. Therefore recycling is a major part of Tersus environmental policy. This policy has been set up to increase staff awareness and participation in waste reduction and recycling schemes in all our offices. The following are steps that have been incorporated into our Environmental Policy so that we may make small changes to help combat climate change: Paper- 1. Minimise paper usage by introducing internet version reports rather than hard copies which can be accessed by clients through our company database. 2. The use of s and electronic archiving instead of printing where possible. Utilising double-sided printing facility on printers and photocopiers. Printing (if possible) in single line spacing format. 3. All s carry a statement, asking recipients to consider the environment and to only print s when absolutely necessary. 4. All offices use 100%recyled paper. 5. All paper waste including shredded paper waste is recycled at local recycling centres. Cardboard- 1. All cardboard used as packaging etc. is recycled at local recycling centres. 2. Where possible cardboard boxes are re-used for packaging. 3. Stationery and other supplies are ordered in bulk where possible to minimize packaging waste. Mixed Recyclables- 1. All cans, glass, and plastics are sorted at each office and recycled at local recycling centres. 2. All ink cartridges and toner cassettes are recycled generally by returning them to the manufacturer for re-engineering. Vehicles- 1. All Company vehicles are Diesel fuelled. 2. All site vehicles have Trackers installed so the closest analyst can be identified and sent to the nearest location. Thus ensuring carbon and cost efficient travel routes. 3. For long journeys senior employees are encouraged to use public transport such as trains etc. 4. Investigations are ongoing to obtain suitable vehicles which operate on LPG. Heating- 1. All offices have 100% double glazed windows to reduce the loss of heat thus reducing energy usage. 2. Heating is by a central heating system using Radiators instead of individual electric heaters. 5 TER/EP/V1

6 Electricity- 1. All staff are encouraged to switch off all mains appliances before leaving the building, where this is appropriate. 2. Carbon Trust stickers have been placed at mains outlets and light switches requesting them to be turned off after usage. 3. Most offices have fitted light sensors to switch lighting on only when the room is being used. 6 TER/EP/V1
