Republic of the Sudan Ministry of Water Resources, Irrigation & Electricity What kind of energy production do we need to industrialize Sudan? 11 th German-African Energy Forum-Hamburg, April th 2017

Preface Sudan is a promising country which has a huge potential and natural resources, consequently electricity is the main, essentialandcomprehensiveandenergy which represents the foundation of industrialdevelopment.

Installed capacity (MW) Hydro 49% Steam 29% Gas Turbines 4% Combined cycle 13% Diesel 5% Type Hydro Diesel Capacity (MW) Combined cycle Gas Turbines Steam Total 1, ,417

Total generated Energy in 2016 was 14,870 GWh Hydro 54% Interchange 3% Steam Turbines 30% Gas Turbines 0% Diesel 2% Combined cycle 11%

Electricity Generation Growth

Industrial s Sector Energy Consumption Energy consumption of industrial's sector in Sudan represents about 18% of the total sold electric energy. To encourage this sector to overcome the rapid increase of expenses, the government provide not only a subsidized tariff but also aim to utilize the renewable energy.

Electric Energy Consumption by Sector Residential 54% Governmental 10% Agricultural 6% Commercial 12% Industrial 18%

What kind of energy production do we need to industrialize Sudan? Ministry of water resources, irrigation and electricity exerts a valuable effort to provide the required energy to overcome the demand rapid growth of the consumption, especially industrial sector.

Sudan aims to implement many ongoing and future projects which includes generation, transmission and distribution facilities comprise of different types of generation taking into consideration the needs of industrial sector the motive energy.

Which Kind of Electric Energy Sources are Produced in the Sudan? Hydroelectricity Merowe Dam Fossil Fuels Garri Combined cycle

Future & Current Projects No Project Capacity (MW) 1 Red Sea Combined cycle 1,500 2 Garri3 Combined cycle Albagair combined cycle NEEM power plant Upper Atbara and Setait 320 Total 3,520

German Role German's products and technology are represents a main support to improve the electricity sector in the Sudan consequently the industrialization of our country. To meet the demand growth Sudan aim to depends on a confident and capable products not only the generation units but also the auxiliary equipments.

German Role

Ministry of Water Resources, Irrigation & Electricity is aim to improve the cooperation together with many German institutions, these relationships includes technical supports, consulting services and equipments supply.

It is a consultant of the following projects: 1. Red Sea 500 MW open cycle, feasibility studies and technical support. 2. Albagair project 750 MW combined cycle, bankable feasibility study. 3. Garri 3 project 750 MW combined cycle, bankable feasibility study.

It is a consultant of the following projects: 1. Red Sea 1,500 MW combined cycle, feasibility studies and technical support. 2. Kostiextension project: 1000 MW, bankable feasibility study was already received.

last year Sudan signed agreement with SIEMENS to purchase a five Siemens gas turbines SGT-2000E ( the total capacity about 900 MW) which will be the basis of a bigger combined cycle in the Sudan known as Siemens Power Projects as follows:

Garri3 projects Comprised of three gas turbines (Siemens SGT-2000E) 187 MW each, they represent phase1of the combined cycle with 750 MW total capacity which shall be upgraded to.

Red Sea projects The project comprised of two gas turbines (Siemens SGT-2000E) 187 MW each, they will represent a part of phase 1of the combined cycle with1500mw totalcapacity.

TRANSMISSION LINE MAIN PROJECTS PROJECT1. BLUE NILE ENERGY CORRIDOR Sudan Ethiopia

Main features of the project Connection from Grand Renaissance (Ethiopia) to New Jebel Aulia(Sudan), with intermediate S/S in New Rabak (Sudan) Double circuit 500 kv line, 3000 MW size (both directions) AC technology Length: 330 km km

Main Benefits of the Interconnection Project Enhancement of the security of the system Improvement of the reliability of the system (sharp reduction power outages) Optimization of the generating resources in Ethiopia and Sudan Future power exchanges with third Countries (e.g. with Egypt)

Main Benefits of the Project continue The designed interconnection allows to get the Benefits from Economic and Financial viewpoints Extremely positive economic impacts, robust to all sensitivity analyses Sharp reduction in losses (EENS) Sharp reduction in system marginal prices Sharp reduction of CO2 emissions High levels of financial viability Promote the economic development of both Countries

Alternatives for the interconnection Several alternatives have been investigated between Grand Renaissance to Khartoum area base on ALTERNATIVE 2 ARK Environmental and Socio-economic KPI, MRW ATB KBA Technical performance KPI JAS Economic (Total CAPEX KPI). 29 Project status: Feasibility Study, Engineering Design and Tender documents had been finalized. Interconnection Agreements documents (CA, O&M and PPA) was prepared and the negotiations and signing of agreements will be finalized in July, 2017.

Project 2: Khartoum Ring 500KV project

Khartoum Ring 500KV Most of generated power in the national grid is evacuating in Khartoum state, the capital of Sudan, which is currently supplied from the National Grid via the 220kv,110kv rings and 500KV transmission lines connected to Marwi power plant. The need for Khartoum area grid project is to reinforce and maintain those rings and increase their capacity to meet the fast growth of electricity demand.

Khartoum Ring 500KV project Topology

Project 3:South Kordufan project This project provide 220KV Transmission Line Ring around SouthKordufanRegion with total length of 630KM and 8 Substation plus extension in 3 Substations.

Project 4: Darfur Region project In the 5 years plan the Darfur region will be connected the main grid by completing three on going projects with the total length 920km of 220KV line and 310Km of 110 KV Line and 12 new substations. Project1:Babanusa Adila-Eldain Nyala-Elfashir, 570 Km of 220KV Line and 4 substation. Project2: Nyala-Kass-Zalimge-Genana, 350Km of 220 KV line and 4 Substations. Project3: Adila-El laiet-kalmendo-tuwasha-dar Elsalam- Elfashir, 310Km 110KV line and 4 substations.

Project5: 500KV Transmission Line port Sudan- Khartoum The main objective of the project is to provide stable and reliable evacuation of electrical power generated from Port sudan thermal power plants planed to be about 3000MW to the national Grid in the Sudan in order to meet the increasing demand of energy.
