The Triple Bottom Line Definition of Sustainable Development Sustainable Development from a Mining Executive s Point of View 4

The Triple Bottom Line Definition of Sustainable Development First the development, whatever or wherever it is, must contribute economic value to the developer and to the stakeholders of the development. The Triple Bottom Line Definition of Sustainable Development It must contribute environmental value, meaning that at a very minimum it must be neutral and not cause irreparable damage, or leave health risks behind. Many times new mines clean up festering problems left over by old mines. 5

The Triple Bottom Line Definition of Sustainable Development And last, and what is new for miners and most other businessmen, it must contribute real and lasting social value to the stakeholders; Operations built and operated at the best global standards Good paying jobs with advancement opportunity Safe working conditions Excellent environmental controls An Educated workforce that has skills that can transfer to other jobs Education for the children of the community 6

Better local infrastructure (water, power, medical services, sanitation, ti housing, schools, roads, local businesses, availability of goods and services, etc.) And very Important: No continuing adverse impact when the operation is closed The TBL Summed Up When the mine is depleted, and we move away to the next deposit, the people we affected must be better off than they would have been if we had never been there. 7

Kumtor Mine Centerra Gold As the ore body plunges deeper, Kumtor is starting ti to develop an underground d mine under the open pit One of Kumtor s technology challenges is operating in a permafrost environment. 12

Technology Challenges with Deeper Mines Basic mining technology needs will be met by the miners and their suppliers Specialized technology, drawing on skills mining companies don t normally have, is a critical area in the future. Technologies in biologic processing, computer modeling, hydrology, sound and DPM control, and various imaging techniques 13
