17 Status of Technology; Initial samples of this technology has been in use for 5 ½ years 1000 lights have been in service for 3 years 10,000 new lights are being installed on the roadways of the County of Hawaii over the next 18 months LPS lighting now on private property is being converted to the FLED Efficiency of the lighting has improved 80% over the past 3 years from 55 l/w to 100 l/w Three new families of filters have been developed over the past 2 years and one family qualified for the Canary Islands More data will be supplied by a Ron Thiel later in the day 8/25/15 C-W Energy Solutions 16

18 ALAN FLED: Good Neighbors Light Pollution Sky Glow Dark Sky Spectral Distribution / Light Pollution? Blue Light increase Sky Glow? Light Pollution: Data being collected to quantify Light Pollution both in terms of spectra and lumen distribution and relate change to spectral data. The below photo is Waikola, HI located below Mauna Kea. The night light is 70% from roadway lights. The LPS will be replaced with FLED and the spectrum measured to compare. Light Pollution: Hardware issue? Data intended to show influence of hardware and spectrum separately. 8/25/15 C-W Energy Solutions 17

19 What About the Remainder of the ECO System?! The Observatory community Is only a small portion of the overall Eco System.! Some things with support data Humans have a circadian rhythm for sleep tied to the blue light from the spectra. Data are available to suggest the influence of blue light on turtles Professor Longcore at Univ. of Southern California is studying the influence of the spectra on insects that are involved in the pollination of food crops. Attraction of birds to the offshore oil rigs can be reduced with the proper spectra.! Some endangered species are thought to be influenced by the spectra but very limited data. 20 Summary ALAN FLED; Good Neighbors to Eco Systems This semiconductor lighting technology offers a methodology to study the impact on the eco system with a controlled spectrum. The FLED has been employed in the field for 3 years proving the cost effectiveness of the technology, stability of the filter materials and versatility of the light. Opportunities / challenges for the technology are great in relation to the eco systems around our every day lives. The users of these new lights will need to change the decades old approach to defining lighting standards to offer the proper products tailored to the unique needs of the eco system. As the efficiency of the products increase, new opportunities will emerge. Already red and green lights with this technology are being evaluated. 8/25/15 C-W Energy Solutions 19
