Priority 16 Strategic Plan Goals With which 1 or 2 goals from the current strategic plan goals does your goal best align? Goal 5 Strategy 2 & Goal 1 Strategy 5 Unit Goal Goal for Establish a demonstration project for the bio-remediation of aqueous wastes containing phenol. What action(s) will you undertake to achieve the goal? Coordinate with faculty advisor to supervise the demonstration project, and underwrite materials needed for the proof of concept as a student research project. Promote the project among the concerned parties. Within your unit s leadership team, who will be responsible for completion of the action? Rhonda Holtzclaw, Lewis Johnson What resources are involved to fulfill the objective (e.g., technology, new faculty/staff, etc) and define existing as well as new resources that will be required? Phenol waste from research labs for use as substrate material; faculty advisor to select appropriate student to complete project; acquire materials and location for the design and construction of project; (Approval of Dean/Dept. Chair); acquire suitable microbes through open air seeding or obtaining culture By what means will you assess goal achievement? Project completion of a fully-functional system, which consumes the phenol; cost and time required to remediate the waste How will you know if you have successfully attained each goal?(e.g., a set of criteria, benchmark, survey benchmarks should include current status and goal to be achieved) Current status: feasibility complete: the project is feasible and identified suitable faculty advisor who has experience with this process, location for project has been determined.

Benchmark: get permission of Dean/ Dept Chair (Dr. Susan Blanchard/ Dr. Robert O Neil)Benchmark: identify suitable student worker to conduct the project Benchmark: complete design, acquire materials, and construct reactor Benchmark: acquire microbes (thru Dr. Komisar) Benchmark: combine all reactants, and allow process to begin, and observe phenol degradation; collect data Benchmark: publish results on poster for Research Day How will the results of the above assessments be used to improve fulfillment of the university s mission (e.g., student learning, faculty research/scholarship, university services, etc.)? These results will exhibit the fulfillment of student learning thru a faculty-guided scientific research project in an area of recent technological advances for waste treatment and disposal. Once established, this project could help to remove an additional waste stream from the university s generated hazardous waste, further reducing our total quantities, in support of our environmental mission.

Priority 21 Strategic Plan Goals Unit Goal With which 1 or 2 goals from the current strategic plan goals does your Goal for goal best align? Reduce single passenger motor Goal 5 Strategy 2 vehicle trips to and from the FGCU campus. What action(s) will you undertake to achieve the goal? Promote partnership with Fl DOT Commuter Services for Van Pool and Guaranteed Ride Home programs. Implement an incentive program to encourage Ride2FGCU users to record ridesharing trips. Explore the potential for hourly rentals such as WeCar and ZipCar on campus. Provide information promoting non-motorized commuting options. Within your unit s leadership team, who will be responsible for completion of the action? Kathleen Crawford, Lewis Johnson What resources are involved to fulfill the objective (e.g., technology, new faculty/staff, etc) and define existing as well as new resources that will be required? At minimum required resources would include current staff time to participate in meetings and prepare promotional materials. Existing technology will be used. Obtaining an electric assist bicycle to allow faculty and staff to try bicycle commuting for a week. By what means will you assess goal achievement? Number of users registered on Ride2FGCU, number of commuters participating in a van pool, number of faculty or staff who try bicycle commuting for a week. Preparing a business plan for implementing an hourly rental program. How will you know if you have successfully attained each goal?(e.g., a set of criteria, benchmark, survey benchmarks should include current status and goal to be achieved) How will the results of the above assessments be used to improve fulfillment of the university s mission (e.g., student learning, faculty research/scholarship, university services, etc.)?

This goal will reduce the number of single passenger vehicle trips to the campus, resulting in lower greenhouse gas emissions for commuting, less demand for parking, and reduced traffic congestion. Strategic Plan Goals With which 1 or 2 goals from the current strategic plan goals does your goal best align? Goal 5 Strategy 2 Unit Goal Goal for Provide opportunities for professional staff development in sustainability. Priority 15 What action(s) will you undertake to achieve the goal? Design and present Sustainability 101, an overview of sustainability at FGCU, raising awareness of current practices and goals, and providing common definition for frequently used terms. Within your unit s leadership team, who will be responsible for completion of the action? Kathleen Crawford, Lewis Johnson What resources are involved to fulfill the objective (e.g., technology, new faculty/staff, etc) and define existing as well as new resources that will be required? Required resources would include current staff time to plan and conduct development training and prepare resources. Existing technology will be used. Additional budget would be required to obtain incentives (shirts, food, door prizes) to attract participation. By what means will you assess goal achievement? number of staff attending, results of pre-and post-class testing, participant feedback How will you know if you have successfully attained each goal?(e.g., a set of criteria, benchmark, survey benchmarks should include current status and goal to be achieved) There is no current introduction or orientation to sustainability at FGCU. Successful implementation will include 25% or more of all new hires attending a session, at least one staff member per department of college attending, and results of pre-and postclass testing demonstrating an increased knowledge.

How will the results of the above assessments be used to improve fulfillment of the university s mission (e.g., student learning, faculty research/scholarship, university services, etc.)? This will provide greater student awareness and is an opportunity for professional staff development in sustainability, a component of Goal 5 Strategy 2.

Strategic Plan Goals With which 1 or 2 goals from the current strategic plan goals does your goal best align? Goal 5 Strategy 2 Unit Goal Goal for Ensure coordination of the activities of all campus units engaged in activities designed to achieve environmental sustainability. Priority 4 What action(s) will you undertake to achieve the goal? Create a structured group of representatives from campus departments and registered student organizations to foster sustainable practices on campus and facilitate communication between groups. Create a calendar of sustainability-related events to record sustainability related initiatives. Within your unit s leadership team, who will be responsible for completion of the action? Kathleen Crawford, Lewis Johnson What resources are involved to fulfill the objective (e.g., technology, new faculty/staff, etc) and define existing as well as new resources that will be required? At minimum required resources would include current staff time to participate in meetings and events. Existing technology will be used for reporting. By what means will you assess goal achievement? Achievement will be assessed by the number of meetings held, the reports to the PBC ESC, information included in the biannual AASHE STARS report and ACUPCC GHG Inventory. How will you know if you have successfully attained each goal?(e.g., a set of criteria, benchmark, survey benchmarks should include current status and goal to be achieved)

Currently there is no coordination or tracking of the various sustainability projects on campus. This goal will be successfully attained with implementation of group and with cross campus participation, record of initiatives and calendar of sustainable events. How will the results of the above assessments be used to improve fulfillment of the university s mission (e.g., student learning, faculty research/scholarship, university services, etc.)? Implementation of this goal will provide a mechanism for the Environmental Sustainability Committee to provide coordination of the activities of all campus units engaged in activities designed to achieve environmental sustainability.

Priority 18 Strategic Plan Goals With which 1 or 2 goals from the current strategic plan goals does your goal best align? Goal 5, Strategy 2 Unit Goal Goal for Reduce or eliminate the use of fleet vehicles that require the use of fossil fuels. What action(s) will you undertake to achieve the goal? Conduct a staff awareness program addressing the impact of fossil fuel powered vehicles, and viable alternatives such as electric and human powered transportation. Prepare an business plan to replace 50% of individual department vehicles with a WeCar or similar fleet of vehicles. Continue to evaluate the potential to bring bio-diesel or bio-diesel blend fuel to the campus. Within your unit s leadership team, who will be responsible for completion of the action? Kathleen Crawford, Lewis Johnson What resources are involved to fulfill the objective (e.g., technology, new faculty/staff, etc) and define existing as well as new resources that will be required? Required resources include current staff time to research available resources and prepare the plans to implement programs on campus. Existing technology resources and budgets should be adequate to prepare promotional literature and awareness campaigns. By what means will you assess goal achievement? How will you know if you have successfully attained each goal?(e.g., a set of criteria, benchmark, survey benchmarks should include current status and goal to be achieved)

Currently there is no program to encourage the use of non-fossil fuel vehicles in the University fleet. Departments that must go off of campus or transport heavy loads on the campus purchase their own vehicles for use. This results in redundancy, and the use of large fossil fuel powered vehicles for trips where a small electric or human powered vehicle would suffice. A shift in the ratio of fossil fuel powered vehicles to other vehicles used by campus departments, and in the miles travelled by these vehicles. There is no central fleet of vehicles for campus use. Departments that must go off of campus or transport heavy loads on the campus purchase their own vehicles for use. This results in redundancy, and the use of large fossil fuel powered vehicles for trips where a small electric or human powered vehicle would suffice. Presentation of a business plan for adoption of WeCar or similar fleet to the ESC will mark the successful achievement of this goal. There is no current bio-diesel use by the campus fleet. A report to the ESC evaluating the potential for bringing bio-diesel fuels to the campus will indicate achievement of this goal. How will the results of the above assessments be used to improve fulfillment of the university s mission (e.g., student learning, faculty research/scholarship, university services, etc.)? This goal will reduce the number of fossil fuel powered vehicles on the campus and the miles travelled by those that do exist; resulting in lower greenhouse gas emissions for the campus, less demand for parking, and reduced traffic congestion.
