Kelheim Fibres GmbH the world s leading viscose speciality fibre manufacturer Head Office Capacity Staff Turnover Kelheim, Niederbayern ~ to/year ~ 500 ~ 160 Mio Euro 4

Our contribution to protecting the environment Our products consist completely of a sustainable and renewable raw material: Cellulose Wood from FSC-certified forests is the raw material for the majority of the cellulose we process Our fibres are registered as compostable materials Kelheim Fibres optimized its production processes in an environmentally friendly and efficient way with Process-integrated environmental protection: More efficient production minimizes the raw material consumption an own power plant (efficiency > 90%) which uses natural gas to produce electricity and steam Effluent free manufacturing: from waste water and exhaust air we recover precious raw materials which are recirculated into the production process while keeping air and water clean 5

Clean Air: Effluent Free Manufacturing Example: Recirculation of sulphur based raw materials Power Make-up Stream CS 2 CS 2 Recovery Plant Power plant (CHP) Fibre Spinning, Spinning Bath Exhaust Air (CS 2, H 2 S) H 2 SO 4 Sulphuric Acid Plant Liquid Sulphur Gas Purchase Na 2 SO 4 Sales Raw material preservation 6 Sales: detergents, Glass industry, Reduction of emissions additional saleable product CO2-free power and steam generation

3. Special Focus: Verdi 11

Verdi the naturally flame retardant viscose fibre 12

Motivation In recent years there were lots of fires which caused heavy injuries to people, children, the elderly and adults, because their clothing caught fire

Motivation Flammability of garments is brought to public interest, lawmakers are taking actions

Flame retardancy Conventional flame retardants: Conventional flame retardants are chemical agents which are applied to the garments in the finishing process. However, they can be hazardous to our health or can cause cancer. Some of them may be washed out (less protection with time, pollution of the water cycle) They may be absorbed by skin contact. Conventional flame retardants can be added into the polymer. Such fibres are mainly used for technical applications e.g. protective clothing Most of them are expensive Some of them lead to reduced processability Instead of chemical agents, less flammable fibres can be used: Polyester / polyamid - burns slower than cellulosic fibres but may melt and stick to the skin causing bad injuries. 15

Flame retardancy Benefits of Verdi: The flame-retardant performance of Verdi is intrinsic to the fibre: it has a special structure and, during fibre production, an additive is added. permanent effect halogen-free Garments made with Verdi can be washed normally and worn directly on skin without danger to the health. 16

How does Verdi work? Verdi is self-extinguishing, i.e. the flames stop spreading. After extinction, the fibre continues to smoulder. The balance between burning and carbonisation is shifted more towards carbonisation, generating less energy. standard viscose fibre Verdi after 5s after 10s after 25s 17

LOI Verdi has a higher LOI than cotton, polyester and viscose and a similar performance to wool , , , Verdi Cotton Wool PES CV 18

DIN EN We passed DIN EN ( Textiles-Burning behaviour of children s nightwear Classification schemes ). The following chart shows the speed of flame spreading in mm/s (lower is better): 35 31,3 29,3 mm/s st marker thread 3rd marker thread 5 1,4 1,1 0,8 0, Verdi 100g/m² Verdi 210g/m² Viscose 100g/m²

Wearer comfort Compared to a standard viscose fibre, Verdi has an increased short time water vapour absorbency (Fi) which leads to a better wearer comfort. Short time water vapour absorbency (Fi) 30 25, ,33 10,8 19,5 0 Verdi 100 g/m² Viscose 100 g/m² Verdi 210 g/m² Viscose 210 g/m² 20

Washability Even after 25 washing cycles at 60 C, over 99% of the additive remain in the fibre washing does not affect the flame-retarding effect. 100,0% 99,9% 99,9% 99,5% 100,0% 90,0% 80,0% 70,0% 60,0% 50,0% 40,0% 30,0% 20,0% 10,0% 0,0%

4. Conclusion 22

Verdi Verdi provides time through self-extinction. turns burning garments into smouldering ones which are easier to extinguish. is produced in a sustainable way and our biodegradable additive is even certified for use in foods. Thus, Verdi is the best solution to prevent severe injuries caused by burning clothes while saving the environment. 23
