ME 217: Energy, Environment & Society Fall 2017 Term Project: Green commuting in ABQ ME217 Energy, Environment & Society

Anonymous poll How aware are you of the relative impact of personal transportation on your energy budget? A) Not at all B) Not aware, but I wish I knew more C) I just look at my montly gasoline costs D) I drive an electric / hybrid car to save on fuel costs E) I drive an electric / hybrid car to save the planet ME217 Energy, Environment & Society Term project 2/21

My daily commute ME217 Energy, Environment & Society Term project 3/21

My energy Sankey diagram ME217 Energy, Environment & Society Term project 4/21

The current situation Vogtle nuclear plant Waynesboro, GA 2 x 1200 MW 14.8 miles each way, about 50 weeks / year 35 mpg About 70 minutes total travel time Must drive outside of peak times 211 gallons of E10 / tons of CO2 Insurance cost Wear and tear on car ME217 Energy, Environment & Society Term project 5/21

A possible alternative JV II natural gas plant Hamilton, OH 32 MW ME217 Energy, Environment & Society Term project 6/21

Some statistics ` ME217 Energy, Environment & Society Term project 7/21

What's wrong with this? Too much time Too much time Too much time Need a shower in the summer! Higher risk of premature death ME217 Energy, Environment & Society Term project 8/21

Potential good things More flexibility in commuting times More exercise (or fewer trips to gym) Lower risk of premature death Reduced fuel cost Stress relief Reduced congestion (if more people did it) ME217 Energy, Environment & Society Term project 9/21

A good compromise ME217 Energy, Environment & Society Term project 10/21

Bike trails in ABQ ME217 Energy, Environment & Society Term project 11/21

16 x Sunpower 327 modules The project Select an e-bike according to: Reasonable cost (say $2K to $4K) Adequate range Adequate power Good quality build Made in US Nice to ride Legal for riding on bike routes Pedelec, no throttle Ease of use ME217 Energy, Environment & Society Term project 12/21

How to select Attach weight to each criterion Evaluate candidate bike for each criterion (stating reasons, not just because) Overall score Rank according to score Make final selection ME217 Energy, Environment & Society Term project 13/21

Payback time Other requirements Assume cash payment Assess reduction in fuel cost, wear & tear of car Assess potential reduction in insurance cost Green-ness Reduction in CO2 emissions Reduction in congestion ME217 Energy, Environment & Society Term project 14/21

Our Calibrated Peer Review system Each paper will be graded by 3 other students The grade for each paper will be a weighted average of the 3 grades Grading 3 papers is a necessary condition for getting a grade on yours We will calibrate each student's grading based on your evaluation of a set of three standard worked solutions You will be provided with a grading rubric to guide your grading. ME217 Energy, Environment & Society Term project 15/21

The Calibrated Peer Review system Calibrated Peer Review (CPR) is a system developed at UCLA for coordinating and evaluating peer reviews of student work In CPR, students review one another s assignments in an anonymous system, providing feedback to other students while also learning how to recognize strengths and weaknesses of their own efforts. ME217 Energy, Environment & Society Term project 16/21

Project timeline November 7: project to be assigned (including calibration questions) November 14: calibration responses due November 16: review session, Q&A, peer discussion November 28: projects due December 5: peer evaluations due ME217 Energy, Environment & Society Term project 17/21

Grading: the rubric How well is the problem understood? Evidence of understanding of major technical details of assignment Evidence of understanding of constraints / performance criteria How well are the results presented? Are plots / figures informative, uncluttered and clear? Is the information relevant? English exposition, spelling, grammar How good is the economic analysis? Accurate sources? Time value of money considered? Does the math work?: Accuracy of calculations, constraints satisfied, makes sense, etc... ME217 Energy, Environment & Society Term project 18/21

Calibration rubric ME217 Energy, Environment & Society Term project 19/21

Next steps Download 3 calibration sample assignment responses from LoboLearn or ME217 web page Grade each of the responses (accessible by tabs in the rubric spreadsheet) using the rubric as a guide Rename the file according to your student number i.e _calibration.xls Submit file using LoboLearn portal by November 14 ME217 Energy, Environment & Society Term project 20/21
