5 1 Corporate Social Responsibility - Environmental policies UKDN Waterflow is determined to operate in ways which reduce the environmental impact of our operations. We strive to meet and exceed the expectations of our customers and society in caring for the environment. We are fully dedicated to protecting natural resources and the global environment, reaching beyond compliance with the law to create and implement sound environmental practices into our business decisions. To demonstrate our responsibility we adopt Environmental Policy and Guidelines as part of our certification to ISO standards that is intended to serve as a guide for all colleagues. This encourages environmental consciousness in both our daily conduct and in the planning, management and undertaking of our work, and with this in mind the Directors have agreed the following: We are committed to actions that reduce environmental risk and restore and preserve the environment. All Directors and Managers have responsibilities that include environmental issues. We are committed to the attainment of uniform environmental standards for processes, services and operations at every facility in all countries. We will comply with all regulatory requirements in all countries of operation. We will work with all government entities for the development of responsible environmental laws and regulations. We are committed to an ongoing review and continuous improvement to all policies, procedures and services, either internal or external, including periodic audits to improve environmental standards throughout the company We are committed to the allocation of resources to effectively manage the Company s environmental responsibilities. We are committed to reducing waste and prevent pollution, conserving resources, recycling materials and ways of reprocessing or converting waste materials into useful produces. We will continue to participate actively in supporting environmental schemes and educating the public regarding environmental conservation. 6 We will continue to train all colleagues in environmental matters and communicate this policy to them as and when required. We will encourage environmental excellence amongst our suppliers and Contractors and market products, services and processes which create the minimum environmental damage and can be used safely. We will encourage the use of public transport and cycle schemes by our employees wherever practicable. But we believe we can go further than that. UKDN Waterflow s Kings Scholar Pond project saw, for the first time, an innovative recyclable cage system used to strengthen sewers affected by Crossrail tunneling. This will be removed at the end of the five year project Page 6 UKDN Waterflow Towards Corporate Social Responsibility, 2013

7 2 Core actions to date Mitigating Future Environmental Impact UKDN Waterflow have developed a sustainable procurement policy which aims to minimise our environmental and social impacts through better selection and improved usage of products and services. We have encouraged our suppliers to adopt practices that minimise their environmental impact and deliver benefits in relation to their own operations and throughout the supply chains. The promotion of an efficient use of resources has resulted in a reduction of water consumption by 5%, a reduction of paper consumptions by 10%, and a move to replace office supplies with more sustainable alternatives where possible To minimise waste we have implemented a scheme involving Shred Pro for the removal of office waste, and we work with local companies in addition to Network Waste and Country Wide Waste to ensure site spoil is removed appropriately With regard to Environmental Awareness and Training as part of our ISO14001 accreditation we launched a Small Change Big Difference Campaign. This platform fostered cultural change throughout the company s daily habits and provided a means to communicate the importance of environmental efficiency to every employee. Through induction and training we provide tool box talks to both office and site staff reminding them of their environmental commitment. Our Environmental Policy and Manual highlight the promises we have made in ensuring our work is and remains, sustainable. To date we have achieved a 94% recycling rate with 684 tons being diverted from landfill on all Network Waste managed sites. Page 7 UKDN Waterflow Towards Corporate Social Responsibility, 2013

8 So far in 2012 we have diverted 91% of materials from land fill, which is over 950 tons, with a minimum monthly recycling rate of 89.8%. At UKDN Waterflow s head office made a 5.8% saving on electricity between 2010/11 and an estimated 18% saving for Over 200 engineers have been trained on environmental awareness and all have received our environmental handbook put together as part of the Small Change Big Difference Campaign. Our fleet continues to look radically at how we conduct business, and things such as our baby environmentally friendly Fiat 500, which is used to ferry round project engineers in a low carbon way around London have been supported by investigation into lighter kit on our vans and electric vehicles. On big projects, particularly within London, we set an expectation for our team to use public transport. 9 One of UKDN Waterflow s key operations is the within trenchless no dig technology where we can reinforce and repair existing pipes rather than digging up, replacing and reinstating. In this respect we can reduce carbon emissions by as much as 90%. In this regard, UKDN Waterflow is in an unusual position, since so much of what we do reduces carbon footprints. And by working with key companies we can drive that carbon reduction still further. For example on our London based Crossrail projects we have sought to use innovation in trenchless technology to protect London sewers during tunneling for this multibillion pound project. Rather than replacing or permanently strengthening sewers unnecessarily we have innovatively recommended and used recyclable sewer cages that can be removed after the five year project is finished. In time we hope to fully report our environmental impact though a specific UKDN Waterflow Corporate Responsibility. Page 9 UKDN Waterflow Towards Corporate Social Responsibility, 2013

12 4 People and the community UKDN Waterflow continues to see a key part of our role as improving standards throughout the industries in which we work. This involves working formally with industry bodies, such as the UKSTT, NSA and SBWWI. UKDN Waterflow executives are Council members. One of them, Roger Kern, was recently honoured for services to the Water Industry. UKDN Waterflow has also pioneered stakeholder working in our contracts and this proved very effective in the summer of 2012 when urgent works were needed to reinforce a collapsing sewer underneath a principal railway route into London just a few weeks ahead of the Olympic Games. UKDN Waterflow s ability to bridge and communicate with stakeholders at all levels enabled us to gain short notice possession of the track and liaise with multiple interested groups to pull off over three weekends a project that would normally have taken nine months to organise. We share this innovation as an example of best-practice with other clients, and promote better stakeholder working across the industry as a result, using our marketing and communications team, through PR, website, Twitter and Linkedin to raise the benchmark across the whole industry. The Group encourages all its employees to give something back to their local community, and facilitates fundraising and also encourages and supports local charitable efforts. Local bases give their time freely to core community projects Throughout the country our colleagues engage with the local community to educate and enhance community life through sponsorships and individual involvement.
