Precision Farming

Precision Farming What is precision farming? Precision farming with regards to water use? Where does Franklin Electric fit in the picture?

What is precision farming? Precision agriculture (PA) or satellite farming or site specific crop management (SSCM) is a farming management concept based on observing, measuring and responding to inter and intra-field variability in crops also to lower input and increase output

Why precision farming? Advantages: - Reduce fertilizer cost and the application of chemicals - Reduce pollution caused by chemicals - Increase yields - Decrease costs - Collection of data for better management practices - Improve the quality of products - Sustainable soil and water management - Yield Monitoring - Remote Sensing - Variable Rate Technology

Precision farming with regards to water use: Water use efficiency (WUE): The capacity of a plant or crop to convert water into biomass or grain. It includes the use of water stored in the soil, irrigation and rainfall during the growing season.

Precision farming with regards to water use How to improve WUE? Adequate soil fertility- Eliminate nutrient constraints Efficient recycling of agricultural wastewater Soil water conservation Irrigation technologies- FRANKLIN ELECTRIC Reference: EFFECTIVE NUTRIENT USE EFFICIENCY IMPROVEMENT: International plant Nutrient Institute

What can we measure, manage and improve? Soil: Physical - 1. Soil Classification: - Determine soil properties (Measure) - Interpretation and soil potential (Manage) - Soil Properties and Yield data (Improve) - Reference: Terreblance, T Omnia

What can we measure, manage and improve? Soil: Physical 2. Tillage: - Deep rip or variable depth tillage - Compaction layers - Reduce run-off, improve infiltration - Seedbed preparation - Implement steering (RTK and Auto- Steering) Reference: Terreblance, T Omnia

What can we measure, manage and improve? Soil: Chemical Soil Sampling: - Determine soil nutrient status (Measure) - Interpretation and recommendations (Manage) - Variable rate application ( Lime, N,P,K) Reference: Terreblance, T Omnia

What can we measure, manage and improve?

Reference: Terreblance, T Omnia What can we measure, manage and improve? Soil: Soil water content Soil Monitoring techniques: - Initial soil water content (Measure) - Monitor soil water content at specific growth stages(measure) - Determine and monitor risks(manage) - Variable rate Irrigation (Improve)

What can we measure, manage and improve?

What can we measure, manage and improve? Crop: In-Season monitoring SAP analysis Leaf analysis NDVI Climatic data Reference: Terreblance, T Omnia

What can we measure, manage and improve?

What can we measure, manage and improve? Yield: Yield monitor data - Management zones - Target yields for VRA prescriptions - Measure and recalculate WUE and NUE - Risk analysis

Where does Franklin Electric fit in the picture? 1. EFFICIENCY 2. PRECISION TECHNOLOGY

Where does Franklin Electric fit in the picture? Precision farming is striving to achieve optimal efficiency with regards to every factor that contributes to the process and that should count for the pumping system as well, and why not use the best and most efficient pumping systems to ensure lower input and an optimum system

Today s Concerns The most pressing issue for industry and agriculture today? Electrical / Energy Consumption The Most expensive part of a pump installation? Running the pump!!!

Pumps represent approx 27% of the electricity used in industrial & agricultural applications Energy is the single largest cost-of-ownership component of a pump system - representing between 50-90% of total life cycle costs, depending on the technology A reduction of energy consumption is a key component to controlling costs Using the right pump technology and keeping up-to-date with materials and design principles is an important step towards reducing pump energy consumption Facts Industrial Energy Consumption

Key Factors for Success Quality Availability Service Innovation Value

Features Completely new design not based on previous designs means no limitations Lost wax / investment casting method on all impellers (Quality) High repeatability Perfect fit every time High efficiency due to smooth vein profile Guaranteed performances Inspires confidence in the brand New Materials (Innovation) Bronze replaced with 304ss Cast iron replaced with carbon steel Sight Glass for oil level Sealing by O-Ring no gaskets

Twinner System

Cataphoresis The cataphoresis treatment used on the carbon steel impellers is an electro-chemical coating process for metallic surfaces, widely used in the automotive industry because of its penetration and long-lasting life, either as priming coat or final painting. Cataphoresis treatment is ideal where a high protection against weather conditions, alkali and diluted acids is required. Cast iron parts are safely used in clean and non-aggressive waters, but they can be susceptible to corrosion when salt, alkali or diluted acid concentrations are present. Furthermore, every casting process produces uneven surfaces, thus limiting the pump s efficiency. Cataphoresis smoothes out the casting surface.
