MALAYSIA WASTE COMPOSITION

PROBLEM STATEMENTS The increasing tonnage of the municipal solid waste has led to major issues such pollution, increase waste management stress and costly By looking at the Malaysia s waste composition, the biggest waste portion is organic waste (~40%) Proper organic waste management will give significant impact on the Municipal Solid Waste Management

OBJECTIVES Our objectives are: To manage organic waste by using anaerobic digestion To generate electricity by using biogas To utilize organic fertilizer generated from anaerobic digestion for green farming practice

ANAEROBIC DIGESTION Anaerobic digestion (AD) is the breakdown of organic material by micro-organisms in the absence of oxygen. Examples: Sewage sludge from wastewater treatment plants Municipal solid wastes (MSW) Industrial wastewaters Agricultural wastes Animal manure Crops waste

ANAEROBIC DIGESTION

BIOGAS Biogas contains methane (CH 4 ) 60% and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) 40% in average and small percentage of other gases and some contaminants.

BIOGAS TO HEAT ENERGY

BIOGAS TO ELECTRICAL ENERGY Each cubic meter (m 3 ) of biogas contains the equivalent of 6 kwh of calorific energy. However, when we convert biogas to electricity, in a biogas powered electric generator, we get about 2 kwh of useable electricity, the rest turns into heat which can also be used for heating applications. 2 kwh is enough energy to power a 100 W light bulb for 20 hours or a 2000W hair dryer for 1 hour.

BIOGAS REDUCE GREEN HOUSE GASSEOUS Methane has a greenhouse gas (GHG) heating factor 21 times higher than CO 2. Combustion of biogas converts methane into CO 2 and reduces the GHG impact by over 20 times. Biogas energy is considered carbon neutral, since carbon emitted by its combustion comes from carbon fixed by plants (natural carbon cycle).

DIGESTATE Digestate is the by-product organic wastes digestion. Digestate could be a solid or liquid material Digestate contains: high proportion of mineral nitrogen (N) in the form of ammonium Other macro- and microelements necessary for plant growth. Organic fractions of digestate can contribute to soil organic matter (SOM)

TUBA ISLAND 3km away from South Langkawi Island next to Dayang Bunting Island Consist of 6 villages Total resident of ~1800 people The first collection for solid waste management started on 11 th June 2014.

MODUS OPERANDI

CONVEYOR Previously the sorting process of collected waste was done manually by the staff at the sorting area. For the efficiency of the sorting process, the plant was installed with conveyer machine. The workforce used for sorting process was reduced from 6 to 3 persons. Sorting process is faster and more convenient

Gas Tank Feeder Hose Switch Board EcoFAST

Ecofast machine function is to shred food waste into smaller portion before feeding into anaerobic digester Large and hard food waste like bones and seeds are shredded After shredding, food waste will be pumped into anaerobic digester via feeder hose
