2 What is Nualgi Nualgi is a patented liquid formulation containing nano-scale micronutrients (5-100nm) required for multiplication of the ubiquitous and beneficial diatoms in any water body. Nualgi contains Si, Fe, Mn, Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu, B, S, Mo, P,K and Co. Nualgi does not contain any live organisms or cultures. Diatom algae are prolific photoautotrophs which produce a quarter of the planet s oxygen. Diatoms also form the base of marine food web, as they get quickly consumed by copepods, zooplanktons and fish. With nutrition provided by Nualgi, diatoms multiply in water. In doing so, they absorb available nitrates, phosphates and other trace minerals while photosynthesizing, leaving the waters oxygen rich and the nutrients in balance.

3 Why Diatoms? Since diatoms are spread through out the water body, the oxygen levels are enhanced homogenously through out the water-body, unlike mechanical aeration or diffusers which have a limited effective radius. Higher levels of Dissolved Oxygen facilitate aerobic bacteria, replacing anaerobic environment progressively. The aerobic bacteria also consume excess nutrients in waterbody working 20 times faster than anaerobic bacteria, thereby quickly cutting down on BoD levels. It is quite normal to see 90 to 95 % reduction in BoD levels within 12 weeks ofdosing. Nualgi can turn around even Zero DO water bodies like drains and dying rivers progressively.

4 More about Diatoms Diatoms are unicellular microscopic algae found in all types of waters like marine, fresh and sewage base. They live in colonies. They are different from other algae as they have silica shells while most other algae have cellulose walls. Due to their translucent shells they can photosynthesize more efficiently often known as early to rise and late to bed autotrophs. They are Net Oxygenators(after accounting for respiration). In STP or closed environment, they can even work at night with artificial LED lights

6 Nutrient Cycling Using Diatoms Diatoms release Oxygen into the water body at all levels, including at sediment interface. They also consume Nitrates and Phosphates for their metabolism and growth. Higher DO levels facilitate aerobic bacteria. Diatoms are consumed by zooplankton which are in turn consumed by fish. Thus nutrients are converted into fish biomass.

7 Nano-Bubbles by Nualgi Since Diatoms produce oxygen in the form of nano bubbles, and not as coarse bubbles as in the case of many aerators, it delivers many advantages associated with Nano-bubbles. Nano bubbles can pervade microscopic spaces in the organic pollutants and aerate them from within.

9 Theory of Aeration and Impact of Nano Bubbles Aeration is a gas-liquid mass transfer process in which the driving force in the liquid phase is the concentration gradient (C s -C) for slightly soluble gases and in the gas phase is the partial pressure of gas. Mass transfer per unit time =K L.A (C s -C) where, K L = Liquid film coefficient =Diffusion coefficient of liquid (D) Thickness of film (Y) A = Interfacial area per unit volume (Surface Area/Volume) C s =saturation concentration at the gas-liquid interface and C = some lower value in the body of the liquid. (Interfacial Surface area of a 1 nanometre cube vs. a 1 millimetre cube is 1 million X. Increase in interfacial surface area leads to an increase in mass transfer per unit time, hence resulting in an increased oxygenation.)

11 Effect of Nualgi on Sludge Accumulation Sludgeis a semi-solid slurry that causes environmental disruption. Presence of Sludge causes the environment to become anaerobic. It releases hydrogen sulphide gas which is deadly not only for the human beings but it also reacts with the copper rods of electronic items, deteriorates them and renders them as junk. Sludge draws out oxygen from the water above thereby lowering DO levels which can cause fish kills. Sludge also stores up pathogens which affects public health.

12 Impact of Nualgi on Sludge Removal Sludge is a mixture of organic waste and sediments. It spreads through out the water body, more towards the centre. In many lakes and drains, the sludge depth may be more than water depth. Removal of sludge is done conventionally by hydraulic and mechanical means called dredging. The cost for survey, dredging, transportation and disposal of sludge is very high. Typical costs are 10 $/Cubic yard. Thus removal of 3 feet of sludge over 5 acres of lake area would cost around $ 225,000 for dredging only. There are also costs and environmental impact in collection, transportation and disposal of sludge pulled out of the water body. With regular use of Nualgiand bio augmentation (enzymes and bacteria,) the organics are digested by the bacteria facilitated by enzymes and therefore the lake remains bio dredged and physical removal is rendered unnecessary.

13 Safety of Nualgi to Daphnia, Animals and Humans Nualgihas been tested (LD 50) by CSIR-Indian Institute of Toxicology Research, Lucknowas per Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) guidelines for acute fish toxicity and is classified as non-toxic to fish under test conditions. In practice too, Nualgi is used in fish lakes whenever fish deaths are being reported. Nualgi is also tested for acute dermal toxicity on Wistarrats as per OECD guidelines and it is concluded that, Nualgi Nano Nutrients, falls under Category 5 or unclassified according to the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for the classification of chemicals.
