Safer sharps disposal and metal recycling for the healthcare sector

On a daily basis Large volumes of single use plastic sharps containers are destroyed by incinerators Significant numbers of single use metal instruments are destroyed by incinerators One tonne of plastic generates ~3.1 tonnes CO2

Single use metal items may be used in Podiatry Theatres Gynaecology Sterile Services The majority of these items are destroyed or scrapped

For a typical 500 bed Hospital Plastic single use container purchase ~ 50,000 per annum Weight of plastic alone disposed of will be between 25 and 30 tonnes This is approximately one third of the total sharps weight

Waste Hierarchy We are the only UK company to develop a totally re-usable sharps container system. Our re-usable system can be adapted for use in all sectors of the UK healthcare industry.

Advantages Potential savings of up to 30% on sharps waste disposal Safer Sharps disposal Safe metal recycling separate to sharps Aligns with waste and procurement hierarchy Aligns with EU Directives for Safer Sharps and HSE

Safety Features The system includes two temporary closures, a catch and by raising the handle The lid disposal chute is available with a secure access Pre assembled ready for use Final Permanent closure when full Fill levels can be easily monitored through the Healthcare Sharps window

Features Colour code lid system to easily identify the waste Our system fully complies with all applicable regulations Ease of use Fully traceable Accessories

Other Benefits Sharps injury reduction Reduction in warehouse costs Reduction in revenue costs and VAT recovery on service Measurable environmental benefits, reduction in plastics & emissions to assist customers to meet waste reduction targets All units are UN & BS certified and fully compliant with IP&C standards

Metal Recovery The metal recovery programme is already helping NHS customers recycle this valuable commodity. Instruments are tracked back to our facilities via the Podfather/Equinox waste management system. This is processed independently of the waste shredding Instruments are treated by high temperature steam sterilisation in the AT treatment facility. The treated scrap metal is sent for reprocessing

Metal Recovery Items Podiatry Significant numbers of single use metal

Metal Recovery Items Theatres Significant numbers of single use metal

Metal Recovery Example of savings achieved from Podiatry SUI NHS GG&C NHS Fife Commencement Scaling up since March 2013 September 2013 Number of re-usable sharps containers serviced (to March 2016) Total weight of single use instruments recycled - kg (to March 2016) Based on the figures above we have saved over 54 tonnes of metal waste going Landfill or incineration. A traditional single use 7L container weighs 1.09kg Therefore the service has prevented around 9.5 tonnes of plastic being destroyed We have also provided significant payback on metal recovery These are significant figures are achieved from a relatively small source of clinical activity We have identified several other applications for the system.

Metal Recovery Example of savings from Theatres and SSD 3 weeks Forecast SSD Total containers serviced( 3 weeks) Total weight of single use instruments recycled (3 weeks) 51 kg 153 kg 119 kg 0.26 tonnes of metal waste saved going to Landfill or incineration.. A traditional single use 7L container weighs 1.09kg Therefore 32.7 kg of plastic will have been diverted from incineration Achieved in relatively small period of time trial ongoing Payback on metal recovery and VAT relief on service

Wash System Cleaning to standard HTM 20/30 RDF computer chip is able to track waste from individual departments, through to final disposal

Summary Safe, Compliant, Traceable sharps waste disposal Safe, Compliant, Traceable Metal instrument recovery Instant waste reduction Instant carbon reduction VAT recoverable service and cost reduction Alignment to current legislation Significant numbers of single use metal
