Climate Friendly Parks Program Climate Leadership in National Parks Inventorying Greenhouse Gas Emissions in the National Park Service Julie Thomas McNamee May 14 th, 2008

CFP Program Overview The Climate Friendly Parks (CFP) Program, a collaboration of the National Park Service and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, provides national parks with management tools and resources to address climate change. Three-pronged approach 1. Measure emissions 2. Develop strategies to mitigate emissions and adapt to impacts 3. Share successes and educate the public about what they can do in their own lives

Climate Leadership In Parks The CLIP Tool Microsoft Excel-based application that walks National Park staff through the process of conducting a GHG emission inventory and developing a climate action plan

Understand Emission Inventories Emission accounting and recording Activity-based emissions Energy, Transportation, Waste, Other Activity data X emission factor = emissions Greenhouse gases (GHGs) Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), methane (CH 4 ), nitrous oxide (N 2 O), High GWP gases (HFCs, PFCs, SF 6 ) Criteria air pollutants (CAPs) Carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), oxides of nitrogen (NO x ), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulate matter (PM)

Establish Inventory Scope GHG sources included Energy: Stationary Sources, Purchased Electricity Transportation: Mobile Sources Waste: Solid Waste, Wastewater Other: Fertilizer Application, Refrigerant Use, Petroleum and Natural Gas CAP sources included Stationary, Mobile, Area Entities included Park Operations, Visitors, Concessioners, Other Permitted Activities Baseline Year Most recent year for which you have the most complete data

Park Total GHG Emissions (MTCO2E)

CLIP Tool: Module 1 User-friendly Built-in navigation Calculations hidden, but accessible Data-storing capabilities Best available methodologies Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Guidelines EPA s Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks

Level of Effort (advice to parks) 2 to 5 months dependent on Data availability Inventory complexity Staff familiarity Request data early Focus on primary data sources Park Operations stationary sources, electricity purchases, mobile sources, waste, and wastewater Visitor vehicle travel Collect secondary data where possible Park Operations refrigeration and AC, forestry, other Concessioner and Other Permitted Activity data

An on-line program that gives visitors the information they need to reduce their carbon emissions and thereby help to reduce climate change impacts on America s national parks. 1) Helps participants make a plan to reduce their personal greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. 2) Promotes climate friendly actions at the household level. 3) Quantitatively benchmarks the emissions reductions achieved by individual and by each park. 4) Inspires individuals to join in collaborative action to reach common goals.
