1 Report on Ozone center s activities devoted to 16-September International day of ozone layer protection In 2010 representatives of Ozone center of Kyrgyzstan took part in a number of activities, held at schools and universities in Bishkek city as well as in the regions of the republic. In general, about 1300 people (pupils, students, and teachers) over the republic (Bishkek city s, Chyi, Naryn regions schools pupils and students of Bishkek city, Issyk-Kul region universities) took part in mass ecological actions, devoted to International day of ozone layer protection. 1. On 8 th September 2010 Ozone center of Kyrgyz Republic organized a briefing for journalists and NGOs 2010 the year of CFC phase out in Kyrgyz Republic, devoted to International day of ozone layer protection. Detailed information about Ozone center s activities for was displayed at the briefing. The most important point of the meeting was discussion of methods of informing the population via mass media. Representatives of mass media: printing, TV, radio and ecological NGOs were invited to the meeting. Journalists were permitted to acquire knowledge to create in future articles, TV programs, reportages on problems of ozone layer protection and effects of ultraviolet radiation on human health. In general 20 people took part at the meeting. Regional center of expertise on education for sustainable development in Kyrgyzstan and Ozone center carried out an ecological action Ozone Zone -2010, devoted to International day of ozone layer protection at secondary school named after Arabaev in Kochkor village, Naryn region on 14 th September. Within the framework of the action a series of competitions for schoolchildren was organized. The following materials were disseminated to schoolchildren: comic books Ozzy Ozone defender of our planet, Muk is my friend, newspapers Ozone reporter, board games Ozzy ozone game, leaflets, informational bulletins. Then a workshop for Kochkor region s teachers (about 20 persons) of natural sciences was organized at this school. The following educational methodological materials were disseminated to teachers: Education Pack for teachers, Education pack for students, Protect yourself from the Sun. Overall about 200 pupils participated in this action.

3 3.On 16 th September an ecological action Ozone layer protection: governance and compliance at their best devoted to International ozone day was carried out by representatives of Ozone center at Issyk-Kul state university named after K.Tynystanov in Karakol town Issyk-kul region. More than 100 students took part at this event. Within the action s framework the following activities were organized: competitions of posters, ecological questionnaire, presentations of students. At the end, all winners of competitions and active participants of the action were awarded with souvenirs and presents. Newspapers Ozone reporter, leaflets, information bulletins, books about the problems of the ozone layer depletion were disseminated to all students. The action was broadcasted on TV (TV channel AntenTV, News, , 20:00 in Russian and Kyrgyz languages; TV channel Issyk-kul TV, Ala-Too aimaktary, , 20:00 in Kyrgyz language). Afterwards a workshop Problems of ozone layer at school lessons for teachers of secondary schools and university of Karakol town was also carried out there. 22 teachers participated at workshop. The following educational methodological materials were disseminated to teachers: Education Pack for teachers and students, Protection from harmful solar radiation, Programme Ozone action, Protect yourself form the Sun, etc. 3. On 16 th September members of the public association Kaiberen, faculty of the department on environmental protection and natural resources conservation of the Institute of mining named after Asanaliev U. carried out an ecological action Save ozone save yourself devoted to 16 th September International day of ozone layer protection for students of the university. Teachers of the institute and more than 100 students took part in this action. Within the action s framework the head of the department on environmental protection and natural resources conservation Bekbolotova A.K. made a presentation Effects of excessive ultraviolet radiation on environment as a result of ozone layer depletion. Students presented the

4 results of the survey What do you know about ozone layer depletion? specially carried out among population, in particular among students. According to their survey most of the people is aware of ozone layer problems owing to mass media. Students held an exhibition of Ozone center s publications on ozone layer protection at the hall institute. Newspapers Ozone reporter, leaflets, information bulletins, books about the problems of the ozone layer depletion were disseminated to all students and teachers. 4. On 16, 17 September teachers of secondary school #62 in Bishkek city carried out a mass action 16 September is an International day of ozone layer protection. Within the action s framework special lessons Save ozone layer in all classes were held. During these lessons teachers and representatives of Ozone center presented information about problems of ozone layer depletion and pupils presented reports, essays on theme Save ozone layer of the Earth. Moreover the pupils of junior classes drew with chalks on asphalt. In general about 200 pupils took part in action. 5. On 16 th September the representatives of Ozone center carried out an ecological action Save ozone layer of the planet at vocational schools # 3 and 94 in Bishkek city. The heads of the schools and representatives of Ozone center spoke at the action. Within the framework of the action newspaper Ozone reporter, leaflets, information bulletins about the problems of ozone layer depletion were disseminated to all students and teachers. Overall about 300 students participated there.

5 6. On 21 st September teachers of technological faculty of the Kyrgyz National Agrarian University organized an activity 16-September is an International ozone day. Teachers of the faculty presented reports on ozone layer depletion problems and effects of ultraviolet radiation on environment. Within the framework of the action newspaper Ozone reporter, leaflets, information bulletins about the problems of ozone layer depletion were disseminated to all students and teachers. Overall more than 100 students participated there.

On 21 th September Regional center of expertise on education for sustainable development in Kyrgyzstan and Ozone center carried out an ecological action Ozone Zone -2010, devoted to International day of ozone layer protection at secondary school #5 in Kara-Balta town, Chyi region. Within the framework of the action a series of competitions for schoolchildren was organized. Upon the end of competitions the active participants of the action were awarded with valuable gifts. The following materials were disseminated to schoolchildren: comic books Ozzy Ozone defender of our planet, Muk is my friend, newspaper Ozone reporter, board game Ozzy ozone game, leaflets, informational bulletins. A workshop for teachers of natural sciences was organized at this school. Department of journalism of Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic university with financial support of Ozone center prepared a special 4 th issue of students newspaper Ozone reporter, 2500 copies, that inserted an interview with the head of the department on environmental protection and natural resources conservation of the Institute of mining named after Asanaliev U. Bekbolotova A.K., assistant of Ozone center Ilyasov Sh.A., national consultants of Ozone center Jumaliev J., Sooronbaev T.M., useful information about the protection from harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation; 2010 Secretary General s message in honor of celebration of the International day of ozone layer protection, latest news of Ozone center and so on.

Ozone center specially for International ozone day translated and published the board game Ozzy Ozone into Russian and Kyrgyz languages and disseminated it at schools, which is of great popularity among schoolchildren. 9. In honor of International day of ozone layer protection the UN Secretary General s message was translated into Russian language and was published in students newspaper Ozone reporter, disseminated at schools, universities, nongovernmental organizations, mass media, and placed on web-site of Ozone center. 9. An advertising publication 16 th September International day of ozone layer protection devoted to International day of ozone layer protection was published on September issue of the republican newspaper Vitrina ( copies). 10. Because of moving of school year in south regions of Kyrgyzstan to October 2010 Osh Technological university and Jalalabad State university are planning to carry out activities devoted to International ozone day in the middle of October.
