Lloyd Memorial High School Energy Conservation Project Can I Get A Watt Watt? Year2 Melissa Stolz As a newer energy club we set out to further educate our students and staff along with our community about energy conservation by inventorying our energy use in the building, hosting and presenting fun outreach activities for students and the community, and publishing our findings for stakeholders. We partnered with the middle school energy club for an Adopt-a-Block Outreach and an after-school Boys & Girls Club program session, and mentored an elementary school energy club in an Earth Day Social Event for students and families. We also hosted a screening of the film Switch Energy Project for our community in an engaging evening event. In our building, we focused on reducing electricity usage and on increasing

Our 5 Goals 1. Reduce the amount of energy used at Lloyd. 2. Teach middle school students about conserving energy. 3. Reduce energy waste when producing raw materials by promoting recycling. 4. Increase energy awareness in our own community. 5. Provide mentoring to energy clubs in the elementary schools.

Goal 1 Reduce the amount of energy used at Lloyd Activity: We supervised turning off the monitors and computers daily, added a sticker reminder to all monitors, and created posters to help promote shutdown practices. Energy Content & Resources: District Energy Manager visited and shared information, NEED Energy Infobooks Student Leadership: 2 Students were designated daily to check the labs and leave reminders Evaluation: Used data collected from our Energy Manager to show that electricity use in our building went down by 15%!

Goal 1 - Reduce the amount of energy used at Lloyd Activities: We inventoried each room for lightbulb and plug load usage. Published the findings and individualized recommendations for all staff at the D B A E H Energy Superstars Patrol Contest was created, promoted, and monitored. Energy Superstars Breakfast was hosted for faculty who have demonstrated shut-down practices regularly. Energy Content and Resources: We got our chart from Saving Energy at home and school teacher guide and online energy inventories Student Leadership: Designed and published the inventory and hung stickers in the classrooms above light switches, placed Switch this Off stickers on all computer monitors in the building. Calculated savings, created Energy Hog posters and hung them in rooms, Completed monthly afterschool patrols to provide feedback and track compliance in all rooms. Evaluation: We will continue monitoring light usage around the building. Teachers are shutting their classrooms down completely at 90% compliance now, which is up from 70%. We will survey teachers at the end of the year

Goal 1 - Reduce the amount of energy used at Lloyd Activity: o We created a checklist for staff members for the entire district to direct them into how to properly shutdown their classrooms for long breaks in order to conserve energy and distributed them just before long breaks. o W P A KY V F E Energy content and Resources: We got our charts from Saving Energy at Home and School for Teachers. Student Leadership: We monitored the energy usage after and before breaks by using cards and stickers. Provided Energy Superstar Breakfast for teachers who met the criteria when shutting down. Evaluation: Teachers are complying by shutting down 95%, which is an increase from 80% at the beginning of the school year. Teachers reported the PSA positively impacted their choices when considering energy/fuel sources in the future.

Activities: Goal 2 - Teach middle school students about conserving energy We presented the N.E.E.D energy carnival curriculum to the boys and girls club of Tichenor Middle School. W G G P D E C D energy awareness Energy Content and Resources: NEED Energy Carnival Curriculum Student Leadership: We gathered supplies, created the games, ran the games and taught the younger kids about energy conservation and usage. We also cheered them on and encouraged them, then hosted the dance! Evaluation: We used cards to ensure they learned and participated in every game and they received a prize at the end for exploring energy sources.

Goal 3 - Reduce energy use when producing raw materials by promoting recycling. Activity Created the classroom recycling program for non-paper recycling with weekly collection of plastics, metals, glasses, and cardboard. Contracted to bring larger recycling boxes into the school for common areas (gyms, cafeteria) Worked with Spanish club to produce bilingual signs to promote importance of recycling in conservation of resources Calculated and published our contribution to reducing energy consumption by recycling as a school. Energy content and Resources: Student Leadership: We collected the recyclables weekly, calculated how much was being saved by not going into a landfill, then determined how much energy was saved by not having to produce that plastic, aluminum, and glass. Then we hung bilingual posters up to promote this. Evaluation: All classrooms in the building now recycle (which is up from 50% last year) and we recycle in common areas. We have collected 2 extra large bags a week for 30 weeks, which means we saved approximately 1,400 kwh of energy from being used to produce the raw materials from scratch!

Goal 4 - Increase energy awareness in the community Activity: We presented N.E.E.D energy carnival curriculum to the community at our local Adopt-A-Block event. Energy content and Resources: NEED Energy Carnival Student Leadership: We promoted the event, created the games, ran the games, gave out prizes, and spoke with parents individually. Evaluation: We signed parents up for energy kits and talked with lots of kids about energy sources and conservation.

Goal 4 - Increase energy awareness in our community Activity W C E E and provide energy education to our neighbors while also supplying LED bulbs and energy monitors and sign families up for energy conversion kits. There will be a survey before and after the film. KY Division for Air Quality will have a hybrid electric car to demo.

Goal 5 - Provide mentoring in the elementary school Activity: We partnered with our feeder elementary present Science of Energy curriculum and energy conservation information to elementary school students and their families in an evening social event we created in celebration of Earth Day. Energy content and Resources: NEED Science of Energy curriculum, Taking Root, MES DRUM Ensemble, MES Lego Club Student Leadership: We worked with the MES Lego Club to build conservation related structures, then worked with the MES Energy club to present the Science of Energy activities at booths, we also signed parents up for energy kits. We gave away tree seedlings, LED bulbs, and energy monitors as door prizes. Evaluation: We surveyed families after the event and signed families up for home energy kits who did not already have one.
