1.5 BILLION PEOPLE HAVE NO ACCESS TO ELECTRICITY GIVEWATTS distributes renewable energy solutions for children and their families in areas without access to electricity.

SOLAR LIGHT MEANS HIGHER GRADES A solar lamp generates more time to study which leads to higher grades.

THE LAMP SAVES MONEY The solar lamp helps reduce costs for mobile charging and kerosene purchases.

CLEAN LIGHT MAKES FOR BETTER HEALTH Solar lamps replaces dirty kerosene and firewood. Better indoor air means healthier and happier children!

WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO GIVEWATTS Founded 2010 in Sweden By Jesper Hörnberg Petter Claesson Offices in Stockholm Nairobi Geneva IDEA GIVEWATTS distributes renewable energy solutions in places lacking access to electricity. OUR SOLUTIONS GIVEWATTS set up a distribution network for household solutions together with schools and clinics. We create distribution solutions both for the energy source, always renewable, and applications, such as the solar lamp and a mobile charger. In the future it could be biomass pellets and stoves. We have created our own distribution model, the GIVEWATTS model, described on the next page. VISION THE CHALLENGE One of the major development challenges is Energy, especially access to electricity. Today, more than 1.2 Billion people lack access to electricity. 70%-80% of the people in sub-saharan Africa is dependent on kerosene, firewood and charcoal for light and heat. All these energy sources are inefficient in terms of cost, time, output and health aspects. People in these areas want quick solutions, but few can afford to connect themselves to a grid (where there are such) or buy and run a noisy and smoky diesel generator. Some researchers say big power plants and building nationwide grids is the solution, no matter the energy source. We believe in a future where you will find power plants serving the industry and the major cities, while the country side will gain most from household solutions. For household solutions we believe the energy future is renewable. GIVEWATTS vision is to become a leading distributor of renewable energy solutions in the developing world.

HOW WE DO IT THE GIVEWATTS MODEL GIVEWATTS makes the products e.g. the solar lamps available to the households through the schools in the area. The household sign up and leave a deposit, and then pay with small installments over a period of 3-6 months. During this time, the solar panels will remain in school, and the children will return the lamp every day to charge in the school until the lamps are paid in full. Once a lamp is fully paid, GIVEWATTS will be able to provide a new one to the school for the same procedure to be repeated, now financed by itself. The donation can multiply and offer more lamps than the initial number of financed solar lamps. This way, new life enhancing technology is introduced, a local demand is allowed to form, and the solar lamps can be multiplied over time, having an increasing impact over time. IMPACT FOLLOW UP EXPECTED IMPACT For every distributed solar lamp we expect: 5 people to be affected School grades improved Health improves with better air quality at home USD in kerosene savings per year + mobile charging savings around USD 30 DISTRIBUTION While the school is in the middle of the distribution, the Parents Teachers Association oversees the process, supported by a local GIVEWATTS Field Officer. During the project we also look for future distributors in the area. Parent Teacher Association GIVEWATTS follows up on each project for two years. A baseline of our KPI s (key performance indicator s) is set, together with the school, when the project is launched. Funding School Household We report back to our funders with actual impact figures, compared to the baseline. Our reporting also includes photos and videos. 9 IMPACT STORIES Cellestine Siranka is in class six, in one of the many schools we work with. Two months ago her parents bought a GIVEWATTS solar lamp. Since then her improvement in school is remarkable. After using the lamp for only 2 months her grades has improved 23%. Before using the lamp, she had difficulty studying. Her parents couldn t afford paraffin for their lantern everyday. An impact story Cellestine wants to become an engineer Before she did most of her reading daytime, during her free time. With the lamp that all changed. She now gets up at 4am to 5am and later in the evening after school from 7pm to 9pm. An additional 3 hours of study everyday courtesy of the GIVEWATTS lamp. With the lamp she started dreaming of becoming an engineer, and she believes that her dream is achievable. She has access to light which means more study time. Hers is a story of success. She further notes that the lamp has no negative effect on her eyes, compared to the kerosene lantern she used to have, which strained her eyes. With the lamp comes light, with the light comes inspiration; the pupils can only dream bigger."

From distributed solar lamps the number is now lamps in 625 schools in Kenya. We have had to grow the project organization which now counts to 22 people including Country Manager, Regional Managers and Field Officers. FUTURE We are growing into Tanzania and Kongo during the beginning of We are complementing our solar lamps with new products such as clean stoves for cooking.
