Products used as Absorbents for Hydrocarbon Spills We handle a variety of products for the treatment of hydrocarbon spills. One of these products, SPHAG SORB, is all natural and a great solution for the problem of unwanted oil spills. The finest grade of sphagnum moss from bogs in Canada is the starting point for SPHAG SORB. The peat fibers are separated from all inorganic hard material, and then activated into a high-grade product with a remarkable ability to absorb and encapsulate oils, solvents, heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides and all other organic chemicals. SPHAG SORB is a natural organic absorbent that can be used in all phases of spill clean ups: 1. The initial response to a spill. 2. The absorption and clean-up of spilled liquids. 3. The removal and disposal of the contamination. 4. And the remediation of the contamination with or without hydrocarbon digesting microbes. SPHAG SORB is a super absorbent organic compound that is used to clean up oil, gas, diesel fuel, solvents, paints, glycol and organic chemical spills. Peat is partially fossilized plant matter (mostly hemicelluloses, cellulose, and lignin) that is formed in poorly oxygenated wetlands where the rate of accumulation of plant matter is greater than that of decomposition. Peat is a highly porous material with a porosity of approximately 95% and a large specific surface area, which gives it a greater absorption capacity than other common absorbents. The absorbed material can be treated with our B100 microbial product to completely mineralize and remove the residual hydrocarbon in the Sphag Sorb or any remaining hydrocarbon at the spill site.

Products for Asphaltene Treatment Asphaltenes are defined as a class of hydrocarbons found in crude oils that soluble in aromatic solvents such as toluene, but are insoluble in n-alkanes such as n-heptane or pentane. The ASTM D (IP143/90) test defines asphaltenes as solids that precipitate when an excess of n-heptane or pentane is added to a crude oil. Asphaltene molecules have a complex structure and are polar with molecular weights ranging for 500 to 1000 and a density of about 1.2 grams per cc. asphaltenes are composed mainly of polyromantic carbon ring units with oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur heteroatoms, combined with trace amounts of heavy metals, particularly chelated vanadium and nickel, and aliphatic side chains of various lengths.

asphaltene in pipe Asphaltenes are a problem in production systems when they precipitate and cause flow assurance issues. This can occur in the near well bore, affecting permeability and wettability of the reservoir. It can also occur in the production string or in surface equipment such as heat exchangers. Traditional treatments for asphaltenes are either mechanical removal via pigging or cutting tools or by chemical treatment with specialized dispersants and surfactants. Asphaltenes frequently co-precipitate with resins and high molecular weight paraffins. The presence of asphaltenes is frequently associated with high viscosity in oil which causes a myriad of production problems. Effective microbial treatments utilize both microorganisms that degrade asphaltenes as well as biochemicals that act as dispersants and surfactants to control the deposition process and generally reduce the viscosity of oil. Possible Asphaltene Carbon Chain

Technical Data Sheet ER-A400 Asphaltene Control Product General information ER-P200 is a liquid easy to use product. It is a proprietary blend of natural facultative anaerobic biologicals and biochemicals and is used to control asphaltene deposition in oil wells, flowlines, tanks, and pipelines. 8 Products for Bioremediation Bioremediation is the best way to handle many hazardous waste issues. Using natural microorganisms and select nutrients to degrade pollutants such as gasoline, kerosene, military fuels, diesel, fuel and crude oils is a proven technology with a long successful track record. Bioremediation with microbial culture products is one of most economical and best ways to achieve degradation levels to bring hazardous waste sites into compliance. From a small crude spill at a stripper well to a leaking underground storage tank at a gas station or even a spill in a refinery tank farm, bioremediation is the tool to use. ER Solutions offers a broad spectrum blend of naturally occurring microorganisms targeted at all these hydrocarbon problems. Derived from land and water sources as most of our products are, it is safe to use and easy to apply. The product is compatible with a variety of other products used in bioremediation. Often significant reductions can be seen in as little as a month. Land farming Typical application of the product is by spraying or by injection into the subsurface and groundwater. The product can be used with nutrient solution or a variety of electron acceptor products. The product is also effective on a wide variety of chlorinated hydrocarbons such herbicides, pesticides and chlorinated aliphatic such as perchlorethylene. Oil spill clean-up

Products for Control of Corrosion Corrosion is a complex subject with many different causes. We make products that function using classic techniques for slowing corrosion rates such as filming agents to passivate surfaces as well as highly innovative products that focus on root causes of corrosion such as the presence of sulfate reducing bacteria (SRBs), acid producing bacteria (APBs) and microbial induced corrosion (MIC). Hydrogen Sulfide Hydrogen sulfide is a common problem in the oil patch. Corrosive and toxic, billions of dollars are spent in the industry for its control and removal every year. The gas is as toxic as cyanide and workers are lost every year. There are two basic types, that of geochemical origin and that of microbial origin, produced by sulfate reducing bacteria or SRBs. The latter can be treated successfully with a combination of biocide, metabolic inhibitor and microbes to replace the hydrogen sulfide producing population.

Geochemical hydrogen sulfide can only be removed using chemical scrubbers or other techniques, but active research suggests that a cure for geochemical hydrogen sulfide can also be accomplished in the near future. Biological hydrogen sulfide can be treated with our products. Our C505 and our C510 products can be used together or separately to control biological hydrogen sulfide. Best results are achieved by using a high strength biocide kill as the first treatment followed by a combination treatment of C505 metabolic inhibitor and C510 MIC controlling microbes to control any residual sulfate reducing bacteria.

Technical Data Sheet ER-C500 Corrosion Control Product General information ER-C500 is a liquid easy to use product. It is a proprietary blend of natural facultative anaerobic biologicals and biochemicals and is used to control general corrosion in oil wells, flowlines, tanks, and pipelines. It contains bacterial produced and other filming agents that bind to metal surfaces and act as passivating agents, slowing corrosion rates. It also contains chelating agents that reduce scale deposition, thereby reducing sites under which corrosion can occur. It disperses, dissolves and prevent scale problems through the biosurfactants, di- and monocarboxylic acids and phospholipids that it contains and produces. It also possesses some paraffin control activity. Most Energy Remediation Solutions products are compatible and can be used together to treat several different production issues such as asphaltenes, scale and paraffin at the same time. Specifications of the Product The product is a saline based product that is a turbid tannish gray in color. Its ph is 7.0 +/-1.0 and its weight per gallon is about 8.6 lbs. per gallon. (1.03 kilograms/liter) The specific gravity is The product freezes at 32 F (0 C) and it has a viscosity of 1.30 cps at 15.5C. It has a strong organic odor. Application The product comes ready to use and can be introduced into the production system in the same manner as similar chemical products. It can be batch treated down the casing, applied continuously or semicontinuous with an injection pump system or squeezed into the formation. The latter treatment is generally used to stimulate oil production in the well. Batch treatments generally involve the product being applied to the annulus and flushed with clean lease or fresh water. KCl solutions can also be used in clay sensitive formations. Ideally the well should be shut in after a batch treatment for at least 24 hours to allow the product bacteria to attach to surfaces and begin working on scale deposits. The initial treatment is to establish a colony of microorganisms that are then replenished using periodic maintenance treatments. Squeeze treatment volumes are generally a function of fluid production, porosity, perforation interval and desired depth of penetration. In such treatments, the well is shut in for several days. The product can also be used in salt water disposal and water flood injection wells to control scales. These are generally done by monthly batch treatments. Safety The product meets EPA requirements for release into the environment. Special safety equipment is not required. Routine hygiene practices should be observed. Shipping The product is shipped in 5 gallon pails. Larger size containers (55 gallon drums and totes) are also available for special order.

Technical Data Sheet ER-C505 SRB Control Product General information ER-C505 is a liquid easy to use nutrient and metabolic inhibitor formulation for the control of sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB). SRBs are the principal agents of microbially mediated corrosion as a result of their ability to induce cathodic depolarization and produce hydrogen sulfide. SRBs utilize sulfate (and occasionally other sulfur compounds) in oilfield water to produce hydrogen sulfide, a well-known toxic and corrosive gas. C505 acts at several levels to control SRB problems. Containing a non-biocidal metabolic inhibitor of SRBs, it creates environmental conditions unfavorable for SRB growth. It also has specific agents that suppress biofilm formation, inhibiting SRB activity as biofilms are their typical habitat in oil production systems. It also contains passivating agents that reduce corrosion rates indirectly inhibiting SRB growth and corrosion. Most Energy Remediation Solutions products are compatible and can be used together to treat several different production issues such as asphaltenes, scale and paraffin at the same time. Unlike conventional biocides, resistance has rarely been seen in any application. Specifications of the Product The product is a water based product that is cloudy yellow to green in color. Its ph is 7.0 +/-1.0 and its weight per gallon is about 8.9 lbs. per gallon. (1.08 kilograms/liter) The specific gravity is The product freezes at 32 F (0 C) and it has a viscosity of 1.30 cps at 15.5C. It has a strong chemical odor. Application The product comes ready to use and can be introduced into the production system in the same manner as similar chemical products. It can be batch treated down the casing, applied continuously or semicontinuous with an injection pump system or squeezed into the formation. The latter treatment is generally used to address formation contamination issues. Batch treatments generally involve the product being applied to the annulus and flushed with clean lease or fresh water. KCl solutions can also be used in clay sensitive formations. Ideally the well should first be treated with a high concentration biocide kill (hypochlorite solutions are recommended) to reduce the overall microbial population of the system. Then ER-C505 is applied to initiate specific SRB control. The most successful treatments are then followed with an application of the ER-C510 microbial product which specifically competes with SRBs and APBs for food sources and corrosive products such as formic and acetic acids. The initial treatment is to establish a colony of microorganisms that are then replenished using periodic maintenance treatments. These are generally done by monthly batch treatments. Safety The product meets EPA requirements for release into the environment. Special safety equipment is not required. Routine hygiene practices should be observed and safety glasses should be worn. Shipping The product is shipped in 5 gallon pails. Larger size containers (55 gallon drums and totes) are also available for special order.

Technical Data Sheet ER-C510 MIC, SRB, APB Control Product General information ER-C510 is a liquid easy to use biological product for the control of microbial induced corrosion (MIC), sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) and acid producing bacteria (APB) in oil field production systems. By competing with indigenous microbes for nutrient sources and also degrading corrosive acid products, it controls and suppresses microbial induced corrosion and converts biofilms to a passivating state. It is best used with the ER-C505 product and a program incorporating an initial high strength biocide kill with a broad spectrum biocide such as hypochlorite. By both degrading corrosive microbially produced acids such as formic, acetic and propionic acids, it reduces APB effects. At the same time, other microbial strains in the product degrade sugars and polysaccharides that are used by APBs to produce corrosive acids. Many of these same compounds are also carbon sources for SRBs and the two prong control approach controls both classes of microorganisms. Most Energy Remediation Solutions products are compatible and can be used together to treat several different production issues such as asphaltenes, scale and paraffin at the same time. Unlike conventional biocides, resistance has rarely been seen in any application. Specifications of the Product The product is a saline based product that is a turbid tannish gray color. Its ph is 7.0 +/-1.0 and its weight per gallon is about 8.66 lbs. per gallon. (1.04 kilograms/liter) The specific gravity is The product freezes at 32 F (0 C) and it has a viscosity of 1.30 cps at 15.5C. It has a strong organic odor. Application The product comes ready to use and can be introduced into the production system in the same manner as chemical products. While it can be used as a stand-alone product, ideally the well should first be treated with a high concentration biocide kill (hypochlorite solutions are recommended) to reduce the overall microbial population of the system. 15 Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery Microbial enhanced oil recovery is one of our product areas with the greatest opportunities for producing value for our users. Microbes can be used to not only increase production on oil wells, but also actually increase recoverable reserves. The increase in production is achieved through the use of products that remove hydrocarbon deposits from pore throats, thus increasing permeability and by lowering the viscosity of oil increasing oil flow through the parameters of the Darcy equation. Such applications are generally done a squeeze treatment directly into the formation through the perforations. Open hole completions can also be treated. Changes in production are not limited to immediate increases, but also last up to six months. Payout is often within 30 days. Oil recovery can be increased by using our products in a water flood type application so that the entire formation can be treated. Oil viscosity is reduced and sweep efficiency increased in such treatments. Generally, ER Solutions designs custom products for MEOR application.

Paraffin Paraffin or wax deposition is a common problem in both new and aging oil wells, but especially in the later. Paraffin are high molecular weight alkanes (>C16) that are held in solution in crude oil by temperature, gas content and solvent molecules in the oil. As temperature drops for the oil as it rises in the production string or travels through the surface facility, the wax begins to aggregate in suspension and precipitate out onto oil well surfaces. As oil wells age, gas content is lost and the paraffin may begin to deposit even in the formation, clogging pore throats and reducing oil flow. Conventional technologies for controlling paraffin are chemicals that act as dispersants or crystal modifiers. Hot oiling or hot watering is another physical technology to clean paraffin deposits, but these are also known to damage formations long term. Our microbial product offers safe, effective control of paraffin deposition. Available in 1 gallon, 5-gallon pail (shown), 55 gal drums & totes

Energy Remediation Solutions can design such treatments as needed. Safety The product meets EPA requirements for release into the environment. Special safety equipment is not required. Routine hygiene practices should be observed. Shipping The product is shipped in 5 gallon pails. Larger size containers (55 gallon drums and totes) are also available for special order.

Scale Scale deposition is another common problem in oil wells and in water treatment and disposal systems. Mineral deposits such as calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate occur wherever water chemistries create insoluble conditions for the contributing ions of calcium, carbonate or sulfate exist. These can occur due to pressure and temperature drops in the production string or in the blending of incompatible waters from different wells in water handling systems. Salt water disposal wells are particular areas of concern. Our products can be used to reduce scale deposition in all these situations. Injection pressures for salt water disposal wells can be lowered through batch treatments. Samples of scale in pipeline
