1 Tenth Intergovernmental Session of the IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC-X) May 2015, Phuket, Thailand Project Leader: Professor Dr. Jing Zhang Presenter: Dr. Thamasak Yeemin Marine Biodiversity Research Group, Department of Biology, Faculty of Science Ramkhamhaeng University, 1 Thailand. thamasakyeemin@yahoo.com

2 Objectives To understand the biogeochemical and ecological nature of coral reefs in WESTPAC in different geographic, physical and environmental settings, as well as different types of human interventions; To evaluate the consequence of impact of climate change and other human activities on the health of coral reefs and their sustainable use, and To promote capacity building in areas related to research on coral reefs through sharing scientific knowledge and training activities, as well as collaboration within research networks in WESTPAC. 2

3 Expected Outputs/Outcomes Establishment of a network for research on coral reefs and collaboration with other projects in the region; Enhancing capacity building in WESTPAC through exchange of experts, transferring techniques and training through research; Issue of an assessment report on status of coral reefs in WESTPAC; Joint publication of research results as monograph and/or special issue in international media. 3

4 Activities Carried out and/or to be Carried Out during inter-sessional period May 2012 May 2015) 2012: Workshop on Needs Assessment for Capacity Development for Integrated Marine Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Research in the Asia-Pacific Region (Shanghai, 31 July 04 August 2012) Collaboration with IMBER; Developing human capital for successful implementation of international marine scientific research projects Morrison et al., 2013, Marine Pollution Bulletin 77:
