Power Demand and Supply Research Laboratory for State Grid Corporation of China

Customer profile providing consulting services. In recent years, SGERI has focused research endeavors on improving development strategy with a view to streamlining SGCC s operations. Many of SGERI s research results and recommendations have been adopted by the government of China and major energy companies alike, so that the institute has contributed substantially to China s economic development. SGERI is a winner of numerous national awards. sgcc.com.cn The State Grid Corporation of China is the largest power supplier in China and the world. Its branches distribute power across all of China. Founded by SGCC, the State Grid Energy Research Institute is one of China s leading research organizations. SGERI is the thinktank behind SGCC, with 20 years experience 2

Description The State Grid Energy Research Institute (SGERI) focuses on research for improving the development strategy and optimizing the operations of the State Grid Corporation of China. The SGERI staff is involved in in-depth studies on energy efficiency, environmental SPERI Power was built by Prognoz as an integrated, open, and shared platform for power demand and supply analysis and forecasting. The solution enables SGERI to conduct causeprotection, power demand and supply analysis, institutional reforms, tariff regulation, and so on. The Prognoz team developed the Power Demand and Supply Research Laboratory (SPERI Power) to help SGERI improve its modeling and forecasting capabilities. Scope effect analysis of power market indicators efficiently using endogenous data collected from multiple data sources and special imbedded models. The results of analysis are used to make power demand and 3

Description supply projections for the national energy grid. The data warehouse collects and stores data related to power, the energy sector, and the economy of China and its regions, as well as data on weather and hydrology. It enables SGERI to conduct qualitative and quantitative analysis of factors affecting the macroeconomic development of China along with factors influencing power supply and demand. The results of analysis are then used as input data for forecasting economic development, power demand and supply, and timely detection of any power supply-demand imbalance. The SPERI Power solution provides insight into the following factors: Macroeconomy Weather and hydrology Relationships between the energy sector and the economy Power supply Power demand Early warning of power supply-demand imbalances 4

Description The solution also offers extensive analytical capabilities: OLAP analysis, time series transformation and statistical processing, algorithm modeling and forecasting, simulation experiments, expert judgment, a geographical information system, and reporting. SPERI Power includes models and algorithms to forecast power demand and supply: SPERI Power employs knowledgebased models to forecast macroeconomic processes: Medium-term econometric multisectoral model of the Chinese economy. This model describes at a very detailed level several key sectors in the Chinese economy, including the real sector, households, foreign trade, the monetary sector, prices, deflators, banking indicators, and so on. Long-term econometric model of the Chinese macroeconomy. This model describes key sectors of the Chinese economy, including the real sector, households, the government sector, foreign trade, the monetary sector, prices, and so on. Sector- and region-based power demand forecasting model. This model enables SGERI to estimate power consumption on the provincial, regional, and national level. Country-wide, province- and region-based peak hour demand forecasting model. This model helps SGERI to estimate peak hour loads in the grid based on data about power consumption and peak load hours. 5

Description Project hallmarks The solution is in use in the headquarters and regional divisions of SGCC. Its user base is primarily represented by the staff of the Development and Planning Division of SGCC. The solution enables SGERI to analyze and forecast economic development, power demand, and relationships of power demand and supply, taking into account economic development trends and energy balance; and to provide timely warning on power demand and supply in the future. The solution integrates different data on macroeconomics, energy, weather, hydrology, and so on. The solution is an integrated platform for data and models that enables SGERI to work with standard data, modeling methods, and obtained results at the same time. 6

Description Results of the implementation of the system Less time and effort required to prepare reports, build models, and publish results due to data integration and the unique functionality of the solution Faster calculation of actual power demand and supply by provinces, regions, and China on the whole; much simpler power consumption forecasting process Improved modeling and forecasting workflow, in both the headquarters and regional divisions The capability to browse data and generate reports with just a few mouse clicks due to powerful the OLAP toolkit 7
