1 Eco Club Programme of Govt. of NCT of Delhi Eco Club Programme of Govt. of NCT of Delhi To sensitise the students on environmental issues so as to preserve, conserve and protect the environment. Started with 100 schools during under the plan scheme eco -clubs in schools and colleges. Dr B. C. Schools, Aided/ Public/Private Schools, NDMC School, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya and colleges of Delhi. Department of Environment, Govt. of NCT of Delhi provides Rs 20000/- per yr per school/college Additional Rs 2,500/- from MOEF, Govt. of India as NGC grant per yr per school only Resource materials in the form of posters, reading material, information brochures etc., Are provided from time to time. Eco-club teachers training programme organized for all the teachers. KEY ISSUES / CAMPAIGNS Plantation drive in schools and nearby areas. Maintenance of schools parks and playgrounds. KEY ISSUES / CAMPAIGNS KEY ISSUES Waste segregation and composting of waste. / CAMPAIGNS Awareness about recycling of waste paper. Installation of solar panels. Rainwater harvesting. Monitoring of switching on /off of electrical equipments and water taps. Conservation of water and energy. Observation of environment calendars. Nature trail and fun activities. Publishing of magazine by eco clubs. Any other issue of school s choice. ACTIVITIES UNDER THE PROGRAMME Competitions on environment related topics among students Rally / human chain/eco-care in schools and surrounding areas Plays / Nukkad Natak / drama/ folk songs / games Message on environment during prayer/ morning assembly Miscellaneous activities depending on the schools Action oriented programmes like paper recycling, Vermi-composting, rain water harvesting etc.

The Annual Calendar of the department brought out every year based on the best posters prepared by the eco-club children. Vacation program Department of environment organize vacation programme on environment resources with the help of AFE for the ecoclub students every yr. Class 8 th and 9 th students participate. About 80 students (40 Govt. and 40 Pvt.) were selected through a competitive process and they were given intensive training on environment in Delhi and they were taken outside during March after the exams. Greening Delhi Eco-club students were the pioneer in the plantation programme. All the plantation in city forest were done by the eco-club students and after care was done by Forest Dept. officials. Each eco-club were provided 200 free saplings for plantation in their campus. Nature Trail A nature trail has developed at the two Biodiversity parks like yamuna and Aravali. 3 Best out of waste To encourage 3 R s principle, Dept. has kept a shop at Dilihat, Pitampura where in the products made best out of waste by the eco-club children can display there for sale. Characteristics of a Green School Conserves energy and natural resources. Improves indoor air quality. Removes toxic materials from places where children learn and play. Employs day lighting strategies and improves classroom acoustics. Employs sustainable purchasing and green cleaning practices. Promotes habitat protection. Reduces demand on local landfills. Improves environmental literacy in students. Decreases the burden on municipal water and wastewater treatment. Encourages waste management efforts to benefit the local community and region. Conserves fresh drinking water and helps manage stormwater runoff. Employs sustainable purchasing and green cleaning practices. Encourages recycling. What is a green building??? A green home is defined as one which uses less water, improves energy efficiency, conserves natural resources, generates less waste and provides healthier spaces for occupants, as compared to a conventional building.

4 Why Green Schools??? These schools are built and operated to be full of clean air and sunlight and to be free of toxic materials and harmful chemicals. Green schools are energy efficient, helping to lower utility costs, conserve resources and reduce waste. Green schools showcase a community's commitment to its children and their future, who in turn learn from an early age the importance and benefits of acting as responsible stewards of their communities and the larger world. Various strategies have been developed to make the buildings environmentally sustainable like: Energy Conservation Building Code National Building Code 2005 Griha prakriti rating system GRIHA PRAKRITI RATING SYSTEM Griha Prakriti Rating System for sustainable school has been jointly developed by Association for Development and Research for Sustainable Habitats (Adarsh) and The Energy and Research Institute (TERI). The rating system has been developed to evaluate the environmental performance of existing day school in India. Griha Prakirti Rating has been developed for existing day schools. The Rating system comprises of a total of 15 criteria split across the various sections. These are listed below: Energy Comfort Water Solid waste management Trees Social Process of Griha Prakrirti Rating System Collecting data and filling up the forms- Use of various survey forms and calculators to collect data from the school and analyze the environmental performance On-site Audit- An energy expert will carry out on site audits to cross-check the data & report is submitted to Adarsh. Final Review and Award to rating- Adarsh will review the report and data and award the rating to school. Maximum point in Griha Prakirti rating is 50 & Minimum point is 25. It is mandatory to achieve the minimum threshold of point in each category.
