Event Report Workshop on Energy Efficiency & Engineering IIT Madras Research Park, Chennai 7th February 2015

Introduction THE WORLD TODAY IS REELING UNDER VARIOUS ENERGY RELATED ISSUES PRIMARILY ATTRIBUTED TO OVER-EXPLOITATION OF DEPLETING RESOURCES AND INADEQUATE PLANNING AND DESIGN. WE THE INDIAN INSTITUTE OF PUBLIC POLICY (IIPP) WITH SUPPORT FROM THE IEEE POWER & ENERGY SOCIETY (MADRAS CHAPTER) ARE FOCUSSED ON ENERGY EFFICIENCY ISSUES. OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS, THE ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT DIVISION OF IIPP HAVE BEEN STUDYING THE NEED FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND OPTIMISATION IN MOTORS IN THE SPINNING MILL CLUSTERS OF THE CITY OF COIMBATORE, INDIA. OFFICIAL AND RESEARCH STATISTICS REVEAL THAT ENERGY EFFICIENCY ALONE COULD LEAD TO SEVERAL 1000S OF MWS OF POWER CONSERVATION IN THE STATE OF TAMIL NADU AND AT LARGE, EVEN INDIA. THIS CURBS THE NEED TO GO FOR EXPENSIVE POWER GENERATION. WITH THE EXISTENCE OF SUCH IMMENSE POTENTIAL, THERE COMES THE NEED TO FILL THE SKILL GAP CREATED FOR ENGINEERS WHO DESIGN AND BUILD SYSTEMS WHICH ARE RESPONSIBLE IN THEIR ENERGY CONSUMPTION, WHETHER ELECTRICAL OR THERMAL (AMONG OTHERS). IN AN ATTEMPT TO SENSITISE YOUNG ENGINEERS ON THE PROBLEM OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY IMPLEMENTATION, NOT JUST IN ACADEMIC OR RESEARCH AREAS, BUT ALSO AS AN INDUSTRIAL, POLICY AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERN, THE 1ST WORKSHOP ON ENERGY EFFICIENCY & ENGINEERING WAS CONDUCTED AT THE IIT MADRAS RESEARCH PARK ON THE 7TH FEBRUARY YOUNG ENGINEERS FROM 12 INSTITUTIONS ACROSS THE STATE PARTICIPATED IN THE 8 HOUR LONG WORKSHOP THAT FEATURED 4 SPEAKERS. THIS REPORT HIGHLIGHTS THE KEY LEARNINGS, PRESENTS THE FEEDBACK RECEIVED AND ALSO GIVES ATTENTION TO THE CONTINUOUS ENGAGEMENT METHODS PLANNED FOR THE ATTENDEES.

Speaker Bios & Session Details Session I - Thermal Energy Efficiency in Urban & Industrial Structures Dr. Velraj R, Director, Institute of Energy Studies, Anna University Dr. Velraj R. is the Director of the Institute of Energy Studies at Anna University. He has 26 years of experience in the teaching, research and consultancy domain of energy applications, heat transfer, thermal storage, solar thermal and energy efficiency. He is a recipient of the prestigious DAAD PhD Fellowship between He has to his credit 84 International Journal publications and 140 conference publications. He has represented Tamil Nadu and India in various world-level expert conferences and delegations in the areas of smart grids, energy efficiency and thermal storage. Session II - Energy Efficiency in Industrial Motors Mr. Tamilselvan R., Regional Manager, ABB Baldor Motors Division (Southern India) Mr. Tamilselvan R. is an Electrical Engineer from Anna University with over 20 years of experience in Sales & Marketing with various blue-chip organisations during this period. He has also done his Post Graduation in Business Management. Currently working with M/s ABB India Limited as Regional Manager for Electrical Motors, he is responsible for the technical sales and promotion of the product in Southern States of India. Apart from the same, he is also actively involved in the promotion of Baldor High Efficiency Motors and the Cooling Tower Drives, through-out India.

Session III - Energy Audits, Electrical Harmonic Reduction & BEE EA, EM Exams Mr. S. Shamser Ali, BEE Accredited Energy Auditor & Ex-Indian Naval Engineer Mr. Shaikh Shamser Ali is a senior energy auditing professional with over 30 years hands-on varied experience with international exposure in business leadership, project management, client interaction, O & M, manufacturing, concept selling, marketing, training, facilities management & team building. He is a BEE Certified Energy Manager & Energy Auditor, and an NPC Chennai trained Energy Auditor with 10 years of hands on ESCO experience in performance contracting business. His experience includes service with Indian Navy. Session IV - Energy Efficiency, Environment and You Mr. Sundar Rajan, Environmentalist, Chennai Sundar Rajan wears two hats. One as a mild mannered software professional and the other of an ardent nature lover. With an in depth interest and knowledge on the interdependencies of energy and water across several countries, Sundar speaks at various forums on the need for a change in perspective among today's engineers when the question of balancing need with necessity arises. His notable work includes volunteering with the Poovulagin Nanbargal group, a non-profit clean energy advocacy organization, based out of Tamil Nadu. He was a core member of the delegation that participated in the Fukushima Convention at Japan in 2014.

Presentations Link Event Gallery Link Technical Article Competition Students were given the task of writing a technical article based on the day's talks and the best article contribution was received from Mr. Kundan Singh (SRM University, Electrical Engineering). Mr. Kundan would receive an Arduino Uno Microcontroller Board and a free pass to IIT Madras Electrical Engineering Department's Power Systems Lectures to be held in the month of March Further Engagement Students would be a part of a survey where their household energy consumption would be tracked to help build a map of electricity consumption patterns with and without energy efficiency efforts. This would motivate students to practice energy conservation both at the household and institutional level.
