2 NATURAL GAS FOR EUROPE Natural gas, a low-emission fossil fuel with huge reserves, is regarded as the source of energy with the biggest potential for growth. The mission of GASCADE Gastransport GmbH is to ensure a secure supply of this energy vector to Europe. Gas production in Europe is declining and demand is changing. With our pipeline network we ensure that natural gas gets reliably from the major sources in Russia and Northwest Europe to consumers in Central Europe. Our system takes over gas from transit pipelines at Germany s borders and transports it to German consumption hubs as well as to Western and Eastern Europe, thus connecting Germany directly to Poland, the Czech Republic, Belgium, the Netherlands and France.

3 KEEPING UP THE PRESSURE On its route from the source to consumers, natural gas travels many thousands of kilometers in large pipelines, during which it loses pressure as the molecules in the flow of gas rub against each other and the inside of the pipe. This loss has to be compensated for. That is done by GASCADE Gastransport GmbH s nine nationwide compressor stations, which are spaced at around 250 kilometers apart in the pipeline network. Natural gas compressors are the heart of those stations. Several impellers arranged behind each other on a shaft in a steel casing rotate at a speed of up to 5,700 revolutions a minute. spinning the molecules of the inflowing gas outward and so compressing them more densely together. Gas turbines like those used in aircraft drive the compressors. For the purpose of noise control, the gas turbines are located in sound enclosures, which are in turn located in compressor houses. The gas volume is reduced when it is compressed. That means more energy can be transported through the pipeline. The pipeline s capacity increases and so does supply security for customers.

4 RÜCKERSDORF COMPRESSOR STATION The Rückersdorf compression station in Thuringia is where two of our major natural gas pipelines converge: JAGAL (Yamal Gas Pipeline Link) and STEGAL (Saxony-Thuringia Gas Pipeline). The network operated by GASCADE is connected to JAMAL via the 338-kilometer JAGAL. In turn, STEGAL transports gas westward to MIDAL (Central Germany Pipeline Link) near Reckrod in Hesse. Like a train switching yard, the Rückersdorf station can send the gas in all directions: from east to west, west to east, or to the north. It also supplies gas directly to our customers. A total of up to three million cubic meters of natural gas an hour can pass through the station. The employees can change the quantities and pressure at any time. The 100,000 square meter grounds have three compressor houses, a gas pressure regulator station, a utility and operations building and a workshop. The employees ensure smooth operation of the station.
