Air Pollution The Silent Peril & How We Mitigate Click to add title Click to add subtitle Striving for excellence

Why is air pollution such a concern? Alleged to be the world s biggest preventable killer. Linked to a number of illnesses including: Heart disease (high blood pressure, heart attack), Cancer, stroke, respiratory illness.

Who is at risk? Everybody!

Problem Identified Road Traffic

How we monitor in order to action plan 4 real-time monitoring stations in the borough. Attempted to install 80 sensors borough-wide. 9 diffusion tube sites. Computer dispersion modelling.

Emissions from road traffic modelled to show the following concentrations of nitrogen dioxide

Emissions from road traffic modelled to show the following concentrations of PM

Action Plan We determined that there are on going exceedances of the air quality objectives for nitrogen dioxide annual mean and PM 10. Time to produce an air quality action plan! First action plan in 2003; several revisions have followed.

Action Planning Our Partners Internal Departments Councillors & MPs GLA TfL London Boroughs Hertfordshire Boroughs Residents and local businesses Defra

Traffic & Transportation Internal department with responsibility for road designs, traffic management. Significant partner which delivers a large number of schemes which will affect air pollution. Provider of funding for air quality through the LIP.

Development Control Input into planning consultations. Comments made regarding developments on suitability of location, ventilation strategies, design layout. Propose conditions for applications where air quality will be an issue.

Development Control Conditions on major developments for non road mobile machinery London is a LEZ for NRMM. Construction management plans to control dust. Where sites do not comply with conditions we can take enforcement action through the Planning Enforcement Team.

Green Wall Installed a green wall at Bowes Primary in Measurements taken again in 2016/17. Results pending.

Residents & Councillors Input from residents is one of the keys to success. Some areas more interested than others. Bowes area action group near the A406 has been very active.

Action Plan Current action plan has 48 actions to improve air quality. Under review, old actions removed and new actions will replace them. Annual report to the GLA

The Way Forward There is no one single action that will resolve air pollution issues, multi-faceted approach is required. Alternatively-fuelled vehicles, walking, cycling, improved public transport. To truly tackle the problem a culture/behavioural change is required.

Who is responsible for improving air quality? Everybody!
