Water Supply Improving water supply for the city has been a major focus area for KMC during the past few years. This has involved augmenting piped water supply through commissioning of water treatment plants, booster pumping stations, reservoirs and headworks and at the same time sinking new, as a short term measure, in areas where piped water supply is currently lacking. The distribution system is also being revamped continuously so that it can meet the burgeoning water demands of the city. The table below highlights some of the important achievements in this regard: Ongoing works for Tallah Palta Dedicated Transmission Main of 24 KM Commissioning of New Water Treatment Plants/Pumping Stations In Wattgunge & Khidderpore, citizens were getting water mostly from big dia Commissioning of 5 MGD capacity Water Treatment Plant-cum- Pumping Station at Watgunge Square. Commissioning of 8 MGD capacity Water Treatment Plant-cum- Pumping Station at Jorabagan Park. Construction of 40 MGD Water Treatment Plant at Indira Gandhi Water Treatment Plant, Palta. Jorabagan & Burrabazar areas were getting low pressure of water Capacity of Indira Gandhi Water Treatment Plant was 220 MGD Area of Watgunge & Khidderpore were covered by the WTP project after its completion on Jan, 2006 and withdrawal of ground water was eliminated Water pressure has been improved by commissioning of the plant in Feb, 2006 After commissioning 40MGD WTP on Feb, 2006 the capacity was augmented to 260 MGD

Construction of water supply Booster Pumping Station at New Park Construction of booster pumping station at Gandhi Maidan (Ongoing, Sanctioned under JNNURM) Construction of 15 MGD water treatment plant at Garden Reach Water Works (Ongoing) Bibi Bagan, D.C. Dey Road, Gobinda Khatik Road and its adjoining areas (Ward 36,56,57,58,59) were getting ground water/ ground & filter mixed water Various areas of Garden Reach were not getting water from existing Garden Reach Water Works Several areas of Behala were covered by the insufficient supply of water from Garden Reach Water Works After commissioning the New Park BPS on Jan., 2008, the areas under its command zone are now fed by filter water and KMC has been able to stop withdrawal of ground water Service of 32 nos. of big dia tubewell has been removed By construction of BPS at Gandhi Maidan, several scarcity pockets of Borough- XV will be covered by filter water. KMC has almost completed laying work of inlet main from Garden Reach Water Works to the proposed B.P.S. for filling of reservoir Laying of reserve main for distribution of filter water from this BPS has been tendered by KMC Work for treatment plant has already been started. After completion, additional 15MGD water will be generated and supplied in Behala area which will fill the proposed reservoirs of Siriti, Daspara & Behala BPSs. Construction of Dhapa Water Treatment Plant (Ongoing, sanctioned under JNNURM) Eastern part of the city and some parts of Behala were fed by ground water After completion of project, western, south-western parts of the city i.e. entire area adjacent to E.M. Bye-pass will get access to treated surface water. Raw water inlet main from Ma-er Ghat (Baghbazar) to Dhapa WTP has already been tendered and necessary pipes of 1300mm diameter have been procured

Jetty & pumping station at Ma-er Ghat will be constructed by KMC and land required for such pumping station has already been acquired on lease Replacement of electrical systems at Auckland Sq., RSM Sq. and Behala BPS Old electrical systems installed by KMDA in 1980's had not been replaced which invited frequent break down of power supply to the stations. Frequent disruption of electrical system has now stopped after replacement of old HT power system in the stations Replacement of 6 pumps at Auckland Sq. Old pumps installed by KMDA in 1980's had not been not replaced which invited frequent break down of pumps Out of 8 pumps, 6 have been replaced and as a result a steady supply is now maintained Construction of Reservoirs/ Headworks Construction of Under Construction work of the In Behala (Boroughground Reservoir cum UGR-cum-BPS at Siriti Park XIII), the area adjacent Headwork at Sirity Park to Tolly nullah was not has already been taken up (Ongoing) getting piped water and expected to be completed by end of After completion, the area Construction of Under ground Reservoir cum Headwork at Daspara The adjacent area to Diamond Harbour Road and the western part of Behala (Borough-XIV) were not getting piped will get treated surface water Construction work of the UGR-cum-BPS at Daspara has already been taken up and expected to be completed by end of

water After completion, the area will get treated surface water Construction of overhead reservoir of 1MG capacity at Ranikuthi BPS Construction of Head Works at Telipara Providing filter water was not possible in Naktola, Netaji Nagar, Rajpur and Padmapukur areas due to shortfall in capacity of Ranikuthi reservoir and its pumping capacity Parts of Ward 91, 92 & 105 were getting water through big dia This project will be completed by tend of After completion, filtered water will be supplied during pressure hours KMC has taken up the project for construction of Head Works which will feed the area with filter water from both Garden Reach Water Works and on-going Dhapa W.T.P. Renewal and Expansion of Water Distribution Laying of pipelines Due to leakage and Approximately 198 kms. of blockage of pipelines in various places in the city, water was wasted and it was not possible to improve water pressure, causing hardship to the city dwellers pipes of diameter 4" to 6" have been replaced in different areas of Kolkata particularly in North, Central & South zones as wells tubewell fed areas which has improved supply of potable water Approximately 129 Kms. of pipes have been newly laid for extension of water supply service in unpiped areas

Setting up of distribution system from the Water Treatment Plant at Dhapa Underground Tunnel Work below Majerhat Rly. Stn. Big diameter pipe network was required for distribution of filter water that will be generated at the ongoing Dhapa Water Treatment Plant Project Filling the reservoirs of booster pumping stations at Kalighat, Ranikuthi, Garfa was difficult due to non-completion of this tunneling work KMC was not able to supply the desired quantum of water to these reservoirs as this required use of the existing pressure main As a result, there was shortfall of water in the command zone of these reservoirs Projects for laying distribution main from Dhapa WTP and construction of head works have been sanctioned under JNNURM Prepatory work for the project including tendering and taking over of land is in process. The tunneling project was completed in Dec, 2007 with modern trenchless technology by microtunneling Use of this technology allowed laying of underground utilities without causing much disturbance of road surface and inconvenience to citizens. After completion of the project, the reservoirs are now being filled with the required quantity resulting in increased duration of supply from Ranikuthi and Garfa BPS and better pressure at Kalighat BPS As a result of adopting modern technology for this project, KMC was also able to get a sanction from Union Government for the Project for laying of Tallah-Palta 64" dia. dedicated main, by micro-tunneling. Laying of Tallah-Palta dedicated transmission main (Ongoing, Sanctioned under JNNURM) Age old transmission mains from Palta to Tallah were unable bring the required quantum of water from IGWTP There were also problems of leakage and KMC has taken up the mega project of laying 64" dia. transmission main to bring more water from Palta to Tallah pumping station to provide filter water to water reservoirs of different BPSs adequately

breakage in the pipeline Work has already been started Augmenting Ground Water Supply Sinking of small dia 4867 small dia Approximately 10,000 have been newly sunk small dia were present in different Present number of total small wards of KMC. dia tubewell is 10,189 Sinking of new has improved supply of potable water in both unpiped area as well as in piped areas during non-supply hours Sinking of big dia 317 big dia were present in different wards of KMC. o 114 big dia have been replaced and 33 have been newly sunk to improve water supply in existing ground water fed zone and also to extend water supply service both in piped & unpiped areas ONGOING WORKS AT SIRITI RESERVOIR CUM BPS ONGOING WORKS AT RANIKUTHI RESERVOIR UNDERGROUND TUNNEL BELOW MAJHERHAT ONGOING WORKS AT DHAPA WATER TREATMENT PLANT
