The Gobeshona Conference for Research on Climate Change in Bangladesh Prospect of Sustainable Energy In Bangladesh Sustainable & Renewable Energy Development Authority 09 January 2015 Shah Zulfiqar Haider, PEng, CEA Director (EE & C) Power Division, Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Government of the Peoples Republic of the Bangladesh

What is Climate Change? Previously climate change and environmental activism Immediate image : the protests of the hippie-tree hugger archetype who have no idea about business, real world In past, such individuals' actions were perceived as an uprising against corporations and wealthy By whom? But it was to bring awareness about environmental problem Today Climate Change means Extreme and Violent Weather Pattern Changes also national Security Bangladesh Contribution?

Vision years of Independence Electricity for all (160+ million population with quality) Ensuring Energy Security with Sustainability Generation - Transmission - Distribution

Most sustainable energy is Saved energy 1. Reduce demand for Energy 2. Use sustainable sources of energy 3. Use fossil fuel energy efficiently & economically

Energy Master Plan 5 (five) Fuel Strategy for Sustainability/Security Priority 1 : Natural Gas Priority 2 : Coal Priority 3 : Energy efficiency Priority 4 : Renewable Energy Priority 5 : Nuclear

Promote Renewable Energy Ensure Energy Efficiency Priority area considering Energy Security Environment Climate Change Mitigation 6

Renewable Energy Development: Enabling Policies Systematic approach towards RE development 6 th Five year plan (11-12 to 15-16) envisages development RE Bangladesh Climate Change Strategy & Acton Plan 2008 identifies RE an important mitigation measure under its 5th pillar of Mitigation & Low Carbon Development Create environment & encourage the use of renewable energy RE Policy adopted in December 2008 (Effective from 2009) A dedicated agency formed: Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Agency SREDA

Renewable Energy Policy Renewable Energy Policy visions: - 5% of total power from renewable sources by % of total power from renewable sources by Policy demands: MW power from renewable by 2015 (including Hydro) a. Solar MW - Launched b. Wind MW c. Biomass/gas MW d. Hydro MW e. Others MW MW power from renewable by MW power from renewable by 2030

Incentives from Government Electricity from Renewable Energy Projects (less than 5 MW) - Purchase by Utility or any Consumer Exempted from Corporate Income Tax for 10 years RE Equipment/Raw Materials Exempted VAT An Incentive Tariff Duty exemption: Solar, LED, Wind Power Plant Promotional Funds for Renewable Energy Projects: - Bangladesh Bank - IDCOL - Commercial Banks - Donors involvement

Category Solar Home System (SHS) Successful Business Model Other Solar PV Applications (e.g. Markets, Office Buildings etc.) Roof-top Solar PV Systems Wind Energy Biomass based electricity Biogas based electricity Total ACHIEVEMENT ON RENEWABLE ENERGY DEVELOPMENT Hydro Power BARRIERS TO RE? Total Achievement Total 150+ MW (3.5+ Million Units) 1 MW 10 MW 2 MW 1 MW 1 MW 165MW 230 MW 395 MW

Energy Efficiency Action Plan Government prepared Energy Efficiency Action Plan Targets set up : - 10% of primary and secondary energy saving by % by 2021 and - 20% by interventions Industry, Commercial and Residential Energy Efficiency & Conservational Master plan up to 2030

Energy Efficiency Action Plan (Cont ) - Introduction of Solar Water Heater - Retrofitting Urea Fertilizer Plants - Introduction of Improved Brick Kiln - Improved energy efficiency of Gas Burners - Introduction of improved rice parboiling program - Waste Heat Recovery & Co-Generation in Industries - Accelerate dissemination of ICS - 30 million by ENERGY IS TOO CHEAP TO BE MADE EFFICIENT!!!!!! DO YOU AGREE?

Energy Efficiency Achievement 1. 5 million CFL in a Day in 2010 = 300 MW Saved (Record) 2. Public awareness through motivation meetings 3. An EE initiative by an Electric Utility saved 17 MW in 3 years 4. Donors full support 5. Use of Social Media for mass awareness a. Energy Efficiency Campaign Face book b. Energy Efficiency & Saving LinkedIn Group

Cooking - Traditional Stoves Fuels and cooking habits

Improved Cook Stoves SMEs manufacture concrete (Sanitary shops ) Team of ICS promoters encourage to manufacture and market ICS ICS is just one more product in the range of products the Sanitary shops At present more than 500 promoters Mobilized sanitary shops produce ICS Jobs in rural areas created 15,000 (estimated) 1000 women generate income from house sales Price USD10-15 Grant USD 3.00 per stove Incentive 80,000 stoves sold every month! 1.5 million produced, Additional - 29 million

SHS/ Pico PV More than 3 million small and large SHS disseminated (10-200Wp). 420,000 supported by GIZ Next Steps: Pico Solar Systems (<10Wp) & Solar Pico/Nano Grids? Power & Energy Research Council Bangladesh 2013

Latest Tech : Internet of Things - IoT IoT, also called Internet of Objects, refers to a Wireless network between objects, self-configuring, such as household appliances Wikipedia IoT has come to describe a number of technologies and research disciplines that enable the Internet to reach out into the real world of physical objects IoT 2008 Things having identities and virtual personalities and operating in smart spaces using intelligent interfaces to connect and communicate within social, environmental and user contexts IoT in 2020

Transactive Energy- A Step Ahead Of Smart Grid Allow devices to take intelligent decisions Hey washing machine, electricity cost is low now. Would you like to wash some cloths? Hey I cost the lowest, Why don t you like to have electricity from me Yes, I will. DAYS OF MONOPOLY BY UTILITIES GONE

EE Latest Technology Next Generation of Lighting - Power over Ethernet Revolve around the Digital Ceiling Industry moves to Power over Ethernet (UPOE) Lighting System capable of being: a. Measured & monitored b. Path open to other applications via the network such as HVAC sensors, video surveillance, fire and safety, power Management and building access

Development Impact Improved quality of life through access to electricity and energy Wider coverage of by rural electrification Impact on poverty alleviation through creation of income generation Impact on women empowerment Impact on education and right to information BUT all these to minimize GHG
